On its online television channel NASA announced its historic findings the methane gas emissions on Mars that could have either a geological or biological source. But whatever source the gas comes from, it will become the possible proof of life on Mars. NASA scientists say that life is responsible for more than 90 percent of the Earth's atmospheric methane. Experts believe that there is a good chance that organisms produced the gas emissions as large as some of those seen on Earth on Mars too.

Scientist Michael Mumma of NASA's Space Flight Center said, "This raises the probability substantially that life was there or still survives at present. We think the probability is much higher now based on this evidence." Alien bugs are responsible for strong plumes of methane gas detected on Mars. The bugs that made it may have vanished millions of years ago, leaving the methane frozen under the planet's surface. But another possibility is that some hardy organisms still survive on the Red Planet, living underground without sunlight and using hydrogen from water for energy. They are similar to the microbes which exist on Earth. Methane produced by the action of water on hot carbon bearing rocks, as occurs in volcanic regions on Earth, is the alternative explanation. Some scientists reckon methane is also produced by volcanic processes. But there are no known active volcanoes on Mars.

Whatever the source is, scientists agree that something is replenishing the methane. The discovery is seen as exciting new evidence that Martian microbes are still alive today. Furthermore, NASA has found the gas in the same regions as clouds of water vapor, the vital "drink" needed to support life. Experts speculate that the methane is being emitted as a waste product by organisms called methanogens living in water beneath underground ice. And they would have to be alive today because the methane would otherwise have been lost from the Martian atmosphere.

(11)

36. According to this passage, what is NASA's significant discovery?

(A) There are clouds of water vapor on Mars.

(B) There are methane gas emissions on Mars.

(C) There are many active volcanoes on Mars.

(A) it is likely that there is life on Mars

(B) it is impossible to find any microbes on Mars (C) the more methane gas, the fewer organisms

(D) the higher the temperature is, the higher the sea levels become

38. Which of the following sentences can best describe the relationship between life and the methane gas?

(A) Life accounts for over 90 percent of the Earth's atmospheric methane.

(B) Whenever a volcano erupts, methane is produced by its volcanic activities.

(C) Just like humans, aliens also breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide.

(D) The methane gas NASA has found could have either a geological or biological source.

Text 2

On October 29, 1929, the world turned upside down. For more than a month, stock prices, which had risen to giddy new levels throughout the decade now known as "the Roaring Twenties," had been faltering. Since early September, when stock prices peaked, the market had lost about 17 percent of its value, and the previous Thursday, October 24, the decline turned into a free fall, prompting leading U.S.

financiers like Thomas Lamont to place bids substantially higher than market prices on large blocks of blue-chip stocks in a last-ditch effort to restore confidence and stave off a market meltdown.

But it was to no avail. On Monday, the market continued its sell-off, falling 13 percent further. On Tuesday, October 29, the damage continued. When the closing gavel finally fell just before eight in the evening of that calamitous day, stocks had lost an additional 12 percent. Stunned crowds of investors filled the streets outside the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street. The Great Depression, the greatest economic and financial crisis in American history, was underway.

The "Black Tuesday" stock market crash has attained iconic status in American lore. But there is no agreement on what led to the depression. There were multiple causes for the first downturn in 1929. These included the structural weaknesses and specific events that turned it into a major depression and the manner in which the downturn spread from country to country. In relation to the 1929 downturn, historians emphasize structural factors like major bank failures and the stock market crash. In contrast, monetarist economists point to monetary factors such as actions by the U.S. Federal Reserve that contracted the money supply, as well as Britain's decision to return to the gold standard at pre-World War I parities.

Economic historians usually attribute the start of the Great Depression to the sudden devastating collapse of U.S. stock market prices on October 29, 1929, known as Black Tuesday; some dispute this conclusion, and see the stock crash as a symptom, rather than a cause, of the Great Depression.

(13)

41. What did Thomas Lamont do to restore investors' confidence in the stock market on October 24, 1929?

(A) Withdraw all of his deposit from the bank account.

(B) Invest more money to buy excellent stocks.

(C) Turn to the government for a better monetary policy.

(D) Sell off his shares of stock in some big companies.

42. According to this passage, what is the cause of the Great Depression?

(A) Structural factors like major bank failures and the stock market crash.

(B) Monetary factors such as actions by the U.S. Federal Reserve that contracted the money supply.

(C) The sudden devastating collapse of U.S. stock market prices on October 29, 1929.

(D) The causes of the Great Depression were multiple and opinions on the causes vary.

43. Which of the following statements about the Great Depression is NOT true?

(A) It is the greatest economic and financial crisis in American history.

(B) Great Britain decided to return to the pre-World War I gold standard.

(C) Investors were stunned by the devastating plunge of the U.S. stock market.

(D) The sudden change of U.S. currency exchange rate is known as Black Tuesday.

44. What do economic historians usually attribute the start of the Great Depression to?

(A) The sudden collapse of U.S. stock market prices on October 29, 1929.

(B) The wasteful and luxurious life Americans had led since 1920s.

(C) Wrong strategies U.S. financiers adopted to deal with the financial crisis.

(D) The monopoly of investment on the stock market in the U.S.

45. What is probably the best title of this passage?

(A) Tips on Making a Fortune.

(B) The Great Depression and Its Causes.

(C) Economy and Investment.

(D) Skilled Management of Financial Crisis.
