In recent years, food shortages have become a worsening global problem, especially in poor countries like Haiti, Burkina, and

Bangladesh. The global food crisis actually has its ( 39 ) in several interrelated trends. First of all, crop ( 40 ) in almost every country are reducing. For farmers in poor countries, they cannot afford seeds and fertilizers, thus leading to low production of their staple ( 41 ) . In addition, dramatic climate change these years, including severe droughts in Australia and Europe, has greatly influenced crop yields.

Another area that needs to be (4 2 ) about is the enormous amount of food waste. Some ( 43 ) show that nearly 40 percent of food is wasted in some countries, and most of these wasted foods end up in landfills. In fact, wasted food can be ( 44 ) and used as fertilizers to grow crops. Without this recycling, fertilizers are made synthetically. The production of synthetic

fertilizers requires a lot of ( 45 ) , which in turn is another form of waste.

Moreover, eating habits are also a ( 46 ) factor to global food crisis. The more meat people consume, the more crops will be needed to feed animals. If humans cut down on their meat ( 47 ) , food shortage might be hopefully eliminated.

There are many ways humans waste food, and this wasting has (48) consequences. We all need to look for ways to eliminate waste and thus produce food more efficiently. Most importantly, we must remember that every grain of rice counts.

IV. 閱讀測驗 (每題 2 分 共 24 分) 第一篇

Twenty years ago, most experts believed that differences in how boys and girls behaved were mainly due to differences in how they were treated by their parents, teachers, and friends. It’s hard to cling to that belief today. Recent research has shown that there are biological differences between boys and girls. Understanding these differences is important in raising and educating children.

For example, girls are born with more sensitive hearing than boys, and the difference increases as kids grow up. So when a grown man speaks to a girl in what he thinks is a normal voice, she may hear it as yelling. Conversely, boys who appear to be inattentive in class may just be sitting too far away to hear the teacher.

Likewise, girls are better in their expression of feelings. Studies reveal that negative emotions are seated in an area of the brain called the amygdala. Girls develop an early connection between this area and the cerebral cortex, enabling them to talk about their feelings. In boys these links develop later. So if you ask a troubled adolescent boy to tell you what his feelings are, he often cannot say much.

Dr. Sax, a proponent of single-sex education, points out that keeping boys and girls separate in the classroom has yielded striking educational, social, and interpersonal benefits. Therefore, parents and teachers should try to recognize, understand, and make use of the biological differences that make a girl a girl, and a boy a boy.

49. What is the main idea of the passage?

(A) Single-sex schools are not good because they keep boys and girls separate.

(B) The amygdala is located in different areas of the brain for boys and girls.

(C) Girls have more brain cells than boys.

(D) The links between certain parts of the brain develop earlier in girls than in boys.

51. Which of the following does the author believe?

(C) Parents should pay more attention to boys. (D) Boys and girls should be educated in different ways.

In the 1950s, African-Americans did not enjoy the same rights as whites. Black people in Southern states like Alabama were

segregated from white people. Black civil rights organization had been fighting to have these laws changed. One of the leading organizations was the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The NAACP was particularly concerned about the segregation of Public buses in places like Montgomery, Alabama. The buses there were separated into “whites only” and “colored” sections. All they need was a chance to challenge these laws, and they finally achieved their goal with the help of a courageous black woman.

On Tuesday December 1, 1955, Mrs. Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus. On the evening of her arrest, the NAACP distributed 35,000 leaflets. They urged the black residents of Montgomery to stay off the buses the following Monday.

The Montgomery bus boycott had begun. From December 5 of that year, not a single black person was willing to take a bus. People rode bicycles, shared cars, and got taxi whenever they had to go somewhere. The boycott lasted for 381 days, after which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the bus segregation laws were against constitution. It was an amazing victory for black people. From then on, African-Americans were allowed to have equals as whites when taking buses. Rosa Parks’ heroic deed had helped black people win an important fight for civil rights.

Joy Hirsch, a neuroscientist in New York, has recently found evidence that children and adults don’t use the same parts of the brain when learning a second language. He used an instrument called an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to study the brains of two groups of bilingual people. One group consisted of those who had learned a second language as children. The other consisted of people who learned their second language later in life. People from both groups were placed inside the MRI scanner. This allowed Hirsch to see which parts of the brain were getting more blood and were more active. He asked people from both groups to think about what they had done the day before, first in one language and then the other. They couldn’t speak out loud, because any movement would disrupt the scanning.

Hirsch looked specifically at two language centers in the brain—Broca’s area, believed to control speech production, and Wernicke’s area, thought to process meaning. He found that both groups of people used the same part of Wernicke’s area no matter what language they were speaking. But how they used Broca’s area was different.

People who learned a second language as children used the same region in Broca’s area for both languages. People who learned a second language later in life used a special part of Broca’s area for their second language—near the one activated for their native tongue. How does Hirsch explain this difference? He believes that, when language is first being programmed in young children, their brains may mix all languages into the same area. But once that programming is complete, a different part of the brain must take over a new language. Another possibility is simply that we may acquire languages differently as children than we do as adults. Hirsch thinks that mothers teach a baby to speak by using different methods such as touch, sound, and sight. And that’s very different from sitting in a high school class.

57. The purpose of this passage is to

(A) explain how to be a better second language learner.

(5)

(B) explain how people become bilingual.

(C) describe research into the brains of bilingual people.

(D) describe the best ways to acquire languages at different ages.

(B) describe the functions of the areas of the brains when they slept.

(C) observe the movements of the brains when they spoke out loud.

(D) observe the activities of the brains when they used languages.

59. The language center in the brain that is believed to control speech production is called

(A) native tongue. (B) MRI. (C) Broca’s area. (D) Wernicke’s area.

60. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE for bilingual people?

(A) Those who spoke different languages used the same part of Wernicke’s area.

(B) Those who spoke the same language never used Broca’s area and Wernicke’s area.

(C) Those who spoke different languages always used the same part of Broca’s area.
