Baking soda is a common kitchen item that people traditionally use to make bread, cakes, and cookies. A fine white powder similar in appearance to flour, baking soda is actually a mineral and has a flavor rather like chalk mixed with salt. If this doesn't sound appealing, rest assured, this natural substance (23) its flavor. Owing to its chemical properties, it helps breads, cakes and so on to rise, and gives them the characteristic texture people enjoy.

Besides its use in the kitchen, baking soda performs an amazing range of other functions around the house. (24) in water, it makes a powerful cleaner that can get rid of even the most of (25) stains. Part D:

If you want to understand how interconnected our planet is—how patterns and events in one place can affect life half a world away — study El Niño.

Episodic shifts in winds and water currents across the equatorial Pacific can cause floods in the South American desert while stalling and drying up the monsoon in Indonesia and India. Atmospheric circulation patterns that (31) hurricanes and typhoons in the Pacific can also knock them down over the Atlantic. Fish populations in one part of the ocean might crash, while others (32) and spread well beyond their usual territory.

During an El Niño event, the surface waters in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean become significantly warmer than usual. That change is intimately tied to the atmosphere and to the winds (33) over the vast Pacific. Easterly trade winds falter and can even turn around into westerlies. This (34) great masses of warm water to slosh from the western Pacific toward the Americas. It also reduces the upwelling of cooler,

(4)

nutrient-rich waters from the deep—shutting down or reversing ocean currents along the equator and along the west coast of South and Central America. The circulation of the air above the tropical Pacific Ocean responds to this tremendous redistribution of ocean heat.

The typically strong high-pressure systems of the eastern Pacific weaken, thus (35) the balance of atmospheric pressure across the eastern, central, and western Pacific. While easterly winds tend to be dry and steady, Pacific westerlies tend to come in bursts of warmer, moister air. We know these large-scale shifts in Pacific winds and waters initiate El Niño.

What we don't know is (36) triggers the shift. This remains a scientific mystery.

However, the influence of El Niño is so great that the changes in weather can be seen in many different areas, as far north as Central America and as far south as Australia.

One of the most lovable bird species in Nature, penguins, could be dying out. In fact, 10 of the 17 kinds of them could be gone altogether in the near future. The penguin population has shrunk 30% in the last decade or so. Before looking at the causes of this crisis, here are some quick facts on the birds.

Penguins are a family of 17 to 19 species of birds (37) primarily in the Southern Hemisphere. They include the tiny blue penguins of Australian and New Zealand, the majestic emperor penguins of Antarctica and king penguins (38) on many sub-Antarctic islands, the endangered African penguin and the Galápagos penguin. Birds (39) , penguins have flippers instead of wings. They can’t fly on land. They make (40) swimmers and divers in the water, and some species can reach speeds of up to 15 miles per hour. Penguins may not be able to fly across the sky, but they can fly underwater as well as any fish. These birds have flippers that can propel their streamlined bodies up to 15 miles per hour through the sea to have their meals.

However, penguins are in crisis. It is the threat of climate change (41) a very profound effect on penguins. These species depend (42) sea ice (42) access to food and for places to breed. But the sea ice has been disappearing, and penguin populations along with it.

(A) The Channel Tunnel opened in 1994 with a ceremony attended by Queen Elizabeth II and the French president Francois Mitterrand.

(B) It connects England to France and the rest of Europe, and it is actually made of three tunnels in total.

(C) It has been called one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

(D) On the other hand, the service tunnel is used for services like repairs and maintenance.

For years, people in England and France dreamed of a tunnel under the English Channel that would connect the two countries. After World War II ended for about forty years, the dream of building such a tunnel became true. In the mid-1980s, work on the Channel Tunnel began and it was completed in 1994.

The Channel Tunnel is also known as the “Chunnel,” or sometimes as the “Eurotunnel.”

(43) Two are rail tunnels, and the third is a service tunnel. The rail tunnels are mostly used by trains to carry passengers between England and France, and some trains also transport vehicles or freight. (44)

The Chunnel is the world’s 11th longest tunnel. But its 37.9 kilometer underwater section makes it the world’s longest undersea tunnel. (45) Although a typical journey through the tunnel takes about thirty minutes, trains are only allowed to travel at speeds of 160 kilometers per hour in the tunnel for safety concerns.

(46) Since then, the Chunnel has been seen in movies, such as Mission: Impossible and Mr. Bean’s Holiday, and on television in the National Geographic Channel’s MegaStructures. Undoubtedly, the Channel Tunnel is amazing. It is one of the longest tunnels in the world, and it has made travel between England the rest of Europe far more

convenient.

四、閱讀測驗 (12%) 每題2分 Part A:

For people who travel internationally, suitcases have long been an essential part of life.

Nevertheless, they have only existed for a little over a century, and since their beginnings, they have changed in many ways.

In the 1800s, long-distance travel was much less common that it is today. When people did travel, they usually took their belongings along in trunks. These large, sturdy boxes were made of wood or strong leather. Trunks were especially convenient for wealthy individuals who traveled with many clothes and other articles. Either their servants or other workers handled the trunks for them.

During the early 1900s, more and more ordinary people were traveling for business or pleasure. Since they had to handle their own luggage, smaller containers were needed. Thus, the suitcase was born. Originally, suitcases looked like rectangular boxes with a handle and one or more locks on top. Later, the shapes of suitcases changed and so did the materials from which they were made. Corners became rounded, and plastic began to replace leather or cheap cardboard.

As train stations and airport terminals grew in size, people found themselves having to carry loaded suitcases much longer distances. In 1970, an American named Bernard Sadow solved this problem by inventing suitcases with wheels and longer handles so that people could pull their suitcases instead.

(6)

Today, wheeled suitcases vary greatly in size, from large pieces to small carry-ons. In the interest of convenience, inventors are enhancing them in new ways. Now there are robot-like suitcases that can follow their owners around. Some suitcases even have built-in GPS so that their locations can be tracked by their owners.

47. According to the article, what is one difference between travelers in the 1800s and those in the 1900s?

(A) The latter had to carry suitcases farther.

(B) The former seldom had to travel with luggage.

(C) The latter needed suitcases made with stronger materials.

(D) The former traveled mainly by train.

48. Which of the following changes is NOT mentioned in the article?

(A) What suitcases are made from.

(B) The shape of suitcases.

(C) Other functions of suitcases.

(D) Popular brands of suitcases.

Part B:

The way we treat money reveals much about our personality. Psychologists say that our money habits are shaped by our previous experiences. Money troubles usually take root many years before they develop into crises, self-image problems being the major cause. Many people think of money as a symbol of power. In some families, husbands complain about their wives spending too much because they feel that their positions in the relationships are being challenged.

At the same time, wives may waste their husbands’ hard-earned money because they harbor unspoken anger toward their husbands. When they go over the top, problems start to arise.

Psychologists call those who have no control over their spending “compulsive spenders.”

They need to spend money to feel better, but they usually end up feeling worse and emptier.

Sometimes they do not even know how much they spend until getting their bills. Situations become especially nasty when they buy on credit. Using credit cards generates more excitement than simply paying with cash. The ability to spend enormous amounts of money brings them huge satisfaction; ironically, failure to pay debts also costs them greatly.

Another type of money trouble is bargain hunting. Most people look for sales to get at a special discount. Compulsive bargain hunters, however, make purchases simply because they are on sale. They think they are trying to keep to the budget but they are actually exceeding it.

Compulsive bargain hunters mistake themselves as game winners when they are, in fact, those who got caught up.

Psychologists recommend that compulsive spenders seek professional help. There are certain methods that help such individuals. This serious psychological disorder can and should be treated.  psychologist 心理學家 exceed 超過 49. Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?

(A) Money Talks (B) How to Save Money

(C) Shop Till You Drop (D) Shopping Around

50. The word “compulsive” in the second paragraph can be best replaced with ______________.

(A) suitable (B) uncontrollable

(C) physical (D) surgical

Part C:

Vanilla, one of the world’s most-loved spices, is surprisingly used to describe boring things.

We’d say, for instance, that a “vanilla” wardrobe lacks color or style. This use of “vanilla” in English is somewhat deceptive, however. Many people prefer vanilla-scented products and vanilla-flavored treats to other varieties. In fact, the International Ice Cream Association claims that vanilla ice cream is people’s preferred choice, with 29% of people picking it, compared to chocolate at 8.9%, and strawberry at 5.3%.

What is so special about vanilla? For one, it’s incredibly difficult to produce. Vanilla pods grow inside a specific orchid flower that only remains open for 24 hours each year. If the flowers are not pollinated by bees before they close, no pod is produced. Unfortunately, the flowers can only be pollinated by bees native to South and Central America and the Caribbean. That means vanilla grown elsewhere must be pollinated by hand. The pods then take nine months to ripen and must be handpicked before they go through a lengthy, multi-step drying procedure.

Consequently, we don’t even come close to meeting global vanilla demands. Luckily, chemists have been able to isolate the chemicals that give vanilla its unique taste and create them in a lab. Therefore, most vanilla products these days are made with artificial vanilla flavor called vanillin.

51. What is said about the vanilla plant’s growth?

(A) Each orchid flower can produce up to nine pods.

(B) The orchids grow well in many different climates.

(C) The orchid’s flowers have specific pollination needs.

(D) Vanilla orchid plants only flower once every 24 months.

52. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

(A) We sometimes use vanilla as an adjective that means “remarkable” in English.

(B) Despite all of our advances in technology, vanilla is still complicated to farm.

(C) Preparing vanilla products ready to sell involves numerous stages of production.

(D) Scientists have come up with a way of making vanilla products in a cheaper way.

Shoppers who have mobile phones with an E-purse can use their phones to (54) the dress they see in stores, or go online to buy it. But not everyone is excited about the future of wireless mobile phones. Some critics say that this technology can actually separate people, (55) connecting them. They say that many young people today (56) send videos and e-mail messages with their mobile phones than talk with their friends sitting right next to them. Others (57) a decrease in daily interpersonal communication due to wireless technology in mobile phones. This could lead to less and less face-to-face communication. Amelia Earhart is considered the “Queen of the Air” by many people. Amelia, known for her record-breaking flights, proved her abilities weren’t restricted by her gender, (58) a strong example for women. It’s been 81 years since her disappearance, but the world is still fascinated by Amelia and her amazing life story. Amelia was born on July 24, 1897, in Atchison, Kansas, US.

She was 23 the first time she flew in an airplane at an air show in Long Beach, California. Soon after, Amelia started taking flying lessons, earning her pilot’s license in 1921. She (59) her own airplane, which she named The Canary within a year. Amelia started breaking records a decade later (60) she became the first female to make a solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Then, in 1935, she became the first person to fly alone across the Pacific. Amelia (61) from Florida in 1937 with her co-pilot, Fred Noonan, in the hope of achieving her next ambition: to fly across the world. Sadly, the pair’s twin-engine plane disappeared near Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean. No one knows for sure what (62) .
