OBJECTIVE

This course aims at guiding students through the process of writing paragraphs and essays. Six modes of writing including: Classification,

Comparison/Contrast, Cause/Effect, Process, Persuasion and Summary will be studied again in class and students will learn to develop well-written paragraphs to coherent, consistent, and well-organized essays (with five paragraphs).

Students will also learn how to synthesis, quote and summarize information in writing their essays. MLA style of research writing method will also be

introduced and practiced in class. Eventually, students can conduct a more sophisticated research in which one’s own arguments are logically supported by facts and opinions from reliable sources.

REQUIREMENT

Attendance: Coming to class every time and on time means more than professional attitude of a student, it also means respect to your classmates and teacher. Students who are late more10 minutes after class begins will be marked “late”; those who are late more than 30 minutes will be marked “absent”. Each unexcused absence will take 1 point away from the final grade.

Students with 3 unexcused or (6 excused )absences will automatically get an F for the course.

Students who never miss any meeting get 2 extra points for the final grades.

Sick leave: Please take good care of yourself. A medical report from Doctor is needed for a sick leave. Inform the teacher by yourself if you need a leave.

Asking for a leave for others is unacceptable.

Homework: All paper assignments should be typed out. Please follow the formats in MLA Handbook. Submit assignments to iCan. Late homework is not graded.

Plagiarism is strictly prohibited. A copied homework will be graded 0.

Huikao (會考): According to the Department Policy, students who fail Huikao need to take this composition course again. For those who pass the exam, the scores of Huikao will be counted for 10% of their composition grades for that semester, and they may still fail the course if the teachers think they need to work on their writing of the same level for one more year.

Cooperation and respect are essential in this course. Be polite to your classmates and instructor.

(2)
