NASA Astronaut To Lecture at HKUST
An astronaut of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Dr Leroy Chiao, will give a personal account of his recent space mission in a free public lecture on 10 October 1994 (Monday) from 3:30 p.m. to 5:OO p.m. at the Citibank Lecture Theatre, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. This will be Dr Chiao’s only scheduled talk during his 5-day visit to Hong Kong.
Dr Chiao, an American Chinese, was elected as an astronaut by NASA in 1990. He was one of the seven crew members for the recent space shuttle COLUMBIA’s IML-2 (International Microgravity Laboratory - 2) mission between 8 and 23 July 1994.
The IML-2 was carried by COLUMBIA to an orbit 296 km above the earth. More than 80 microgravity and life sciences experiments were conducted during the mission. The experiments provided new insights into physical and biological processes that could help scientists and medical research personnel develop new materials and treatments for use on earth and in space. The space shuttle completed 236 orbits of the earth and travelled a total of 6.1 million miles.
DrLeroy Chiao received a BS from the University of California at Berkeley and an MS and PhD from the University of California at Santa Barbara, all in Chemical Engineering.
