BETTER CAREER PROSPECTS FOR PHYSICS MAJORS AT HKUST Career prospects of physics graduates and the options open to secondary school students will receive a boost today with the announcement by the Physics Department of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology of changes to both entrance requirements and the undergraduate curriculum. The Physics Department is injecting more flexibility into its undergraduate curriculum by allowing students more time for elective courses. Students will be able to choose from courses offered by the Schools of Science, Engineering, Business and Management, and Humanities and Social Science. According to Professor Nelson Cue, Head of the Physics Department, this will effectively allow physics undergraduates to minor in another field.

“This will result in better career prospects for physics graduates: they will have the option to embark on a science or non-science related career, such as sales and technical support in the technology sector, or in the business and management sector, or they can go on to further studies in physics or other fields.”

In order to give more secondary school students, with a broader educational background, the chance to opt for physics, students entering one of the three undergraduate programmes offered by the department will not be required to have had Advanced Level Mathematics starting from the next fall semester.

“This new arrangement helps to remove obstacles for those who want to explore the fascinating world of physics,” says Professor Cue, who emphasizes the creative side of the discipline. “With our strong faculty and advanced laboratory facilities, we are confident that we can provide our students with an education second to none.”
