Meet at HKUST To Explore
Collaboration in Biotechnology
Experts in molecular biology and biotechnology from throughout East Asia will meet at an innovative workshop at the Hong KongUniversity of Science and Technology on 28-29 April 1997. The Workshop on Molecular Biology and Biotechnology is the first major effort at cooperative research by the Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU), and is aimed at identifying areas of mutual interest for future collaboration and faculty-student exchange. The two-day program includes a Symposium on Neuroproteins and Cytokines, on 28 April, followed the next day by a special Session on Traditional Chinese Medicine. Groundwork for collaborative efforts will be laid in four workgroups focusing on immunochemistry and neurobiology, plant biotechnology, protein design and engineering, and industrial biotechnology.
AEARU, formed in 1996, consists of 16 leading research universities in the region, representing the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and Taiwan.
Current members of AEARU (in alphabetical order) are Fudan University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Kyoto University, Nanjing University, Osaka University, Peking University, Pohang University of Science and Technology, Seoul National University, Taiwan University, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tsing Hua University (Hsinchu), Tsinghua University (Beijing), University of Science and Technology of China, University of Tokyo and
University of Tsukuba.
About 60 scientists will attend the Workshop on Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, representing 14 of the 16 member universities. The workshop has been organized by HKUST's Biotechnology Research Institute, Department of Biochemistry and School of Science. Details are as follows:
