(3) Polar bears live in the freezing cold of the Artic—a forbidding land of ice and snow, where few creatures can survive. Polar bears don’t hibernate. 37 the enormous white fur coat and the special skin beneath it, they stay active all year round. White fur allows polar bears to blend 38 with their snowy surroundings in the far north. It also provides camouflage when the bears find themselves being hunted. But the coat’s main job is to act as the first 39 of defense against the elements.

The outer layer of a polar bear’s coat is made up of hair shafts. The shafts are hollow and transparent, and look a lot like thin drinking straws. Being hollow allows air to stay trapped inside them, and this provides much needed insulation. Another important thing about the hair shafts is that they do not mat. This allows the bear to shake off water, snow, and ice from its coat easily. 40 a second line of defense, the bears have a thick, woolly undercoat of fur beneath this outer layer of hair shafts. This provides even more warmth. Finally, like whales and seals, polar bears also have a thick layer of fat called blubber under their skin. Blubber provides even more insulation.

All the animals must 41 to their environment, and the polar bears face an especially tough challenge. Only the strong survive in the Arctic. But with a white fur coat and a layer of blubber, polar bears are able to make this desolate place their home.

Seeing whales stranded on a beach and dying can be a heartbreaking experience. These huge marine animals, so graceful and 49 underwater, are completely helpless when they lose their sense of direction and end up 50 on dry land.

Making matters even worse is the fact that it's often our fault that these creatures end up in such 51 and life-threatening situations. It is believed that the undersea world of the whale is a world of sound, and whales use it to 52 , to locate prey and mates, and to communicate with one other. Nonetheless, not only does noise from human activities 53 with these activities, but in some cases, it can startle whales so badly that they surface too quickly and bleed to death from the 54 change in pressure. Fear is a powerful stimulus.

On the other hand, whales are one of the largest 55 in the world's oceans, feeding on small creatures called krill, which they filter out of the water with their huge mouths. The rumbling noise from the engines of the crafts can 56 them as they try to eat, causing them to go away from their regular feeding areas. What’s more, while swimming close to the surface and passing through busy shipping lanes and 57 , whales must dodge the big boats to avoid being struck. V. Reading Comprehension (10%)

(1) Everyone gets sick sometimes, but those who work underground risk getting illnesses specific to their environment. Miners, tunnel workers, and even divers may suffer a variety of diseases due to their working conditions. For example, miners often get chronic respiratory diseases; Underwater divers can become sick from pressure changes caused by surfacing too quickly. In general, the frequency of these types of illnesses is rising.

One of the worst illnesses of underground workers is pneumoconiosis, or “black lung disease.” Often found in coal miners, this is caused by breathing small amounts of fine coal dust over long periods of time. The dust builds up, and over time the normally pink, healthy lungs turn black. Symptoms usually include chest pain, coughing, and difficulty breathing. In China, nearly 600,000 people suffer from this condition, and 140,000 have already died since the 1950s. In some cases, a worker may be exposed when young but not notice any signs of disease until many years later. Unfortunately, there is no medicine to cure this. However, the disease is entirely preventable if proper dust control measures are used. Similarly, tunnel workers are often diagnosed with a medical problem called silicosis, which is caused by breathing fine sand particles. In addition, lung cancer has been discovered in those who work in radon mines, or in mines contaminated with radon.

Usually there are laws in place to protect these hard-working people, but the laws must be followed and enforced to be effective. To avoid ending up in the hospital, workers must take steps to make sure they stay healthy by periodically participating in available medical tests. 59. What causes the black lung disease?

(2) O. Henry, the pseudonym of William Sidney Porter, is a well-known American short-story writer whose stories are noted for their witty plots, clever wording, and unexpected endings. Like many other writers, O. Henry had wandered through different professions before he finally found his calling as a short-story writer. He worked as a clerk at his uncle’s drugstore and became a licensed pharmacist at the age of 19. At the drugstore he showed his natural artistic talents by sketching the townspeople that frequented the store. A few years later he moved to Austin, Texas, where he had an active social life, and he took several different jobs over the next few years, from working as a pharmacist to banking. But O. Henry was obviously not a good bank teller. He was careless with his bookkeeping and was accused of embezzlement by the bank. He lost his job, but he wasn’t indicted. After that, O. Henry and his family moved to Houston, where he started writing for The Houston Post. O. Henry usually collected ideas for his column by lingering in hotel lobbies, observing and talking to whoever happened to be there. This was a very useful technique, and one that he used to gain inspiration throughout his writing career.

O. Henry’s most prolific writing period began in 1902, when he moved to New York. Here he wrote 381 short stories, one story each week for over a year. Most of his short stories are set in the early twentieth century. Many take place in New York and often deal with ordinary people like clerks, officers, waitresses, and so forth. His most famous short story, “The Gift of the Magi,” clearly characterizes his style. It is a story about a poor young husband and wife, each of whom sells his or her most precious possession to buy a Christmas gift for the other, only to find that the gifts are no longer needed as they already have their love for one another. In the story, the writer resolves an awkward situation in a warm and creative way, leaving readers with a surprising but endearing ending.

62. What is the main purpose of the passage?

(A) To tell us why William Sidney Porter used the pen name “O. Henry.”

(B) To give us a brief introduction to O. Henry’s life and writing style.

(C) To tell us the reasons why O. Henry chose to be a writer. (D) To introduce some of O. Henry’s famous short stories.

63. Which of the following statements about the story “The Gift of the Magi” is NOT true? (A) The ending of the story surprises its readers.

(B) Each member of the couple sacrifices his or her best possession for the other. (C) This story can best represent O. Henry’s writing style.

(D) The couple knew beforehand that their gifts would not be needed anymore.

(1) When the musical Cats opened in London almost 40 years ago, no one knew that it would become such a hit. In the years that have followed, this delightful musical has enchanted

audiences around the world and broken several records. It has also become the longest running musical in London and on Broadway.

What has made this musical so successful? First of all, it is based on a book of poems by the Nobel-prize-winning author T. S. Eliot. This book tells the stories of several different cats, and Andrew Lloyd Weber, an award-winning composer, decided to make it into a musical by writing songs based on the poems.

The show’s costumes, dancing, and scenery have also contributed to its success. The actors in Cats wear special makeup, costumes, wigs, and even artificial tails. Although it takes hours for the actors to get ready, their costumes and makeup allow them to look like actual cats. Onstage, they also try to move like cats, and the show’s dance scenes have been praised by critics. The show’s set, a huge junkyard, provides the perfect setting for the actors, dressed as cats, to move around, dance, and sing.

Perhaps most importantly, Cats has become successful because of its music. The song “Memory” is one of the best known, and it has been recorded by more than 170 singers,

including Barbra Streisand and Barry Manilow. The records from the show’s original Broadway and London casts have won Grammy awards. And Cats has won several other awards, including seven Tony Awards.

The musical Cats has become a worldwide success. It has been translated into 14 languages, and it has been performed in more than 150 cities around the world. More than 50 million people in 26 countries have seen Cats, making it one of the most successful musicals of all time.
