Going abroad is one of the best ways to learn English and a new culture. It does not always mean making a new home in another country. Actually, most learners only go abroad for temporary study. There are four ways to do this.

The first is a language program. These will offer English classes in an international setting. Learners study side by side with other students from all over the world. The biggest benefit of these programs is that learners are always in an English environment. Language programs abroad are often at a university. They include housing and some may even organize trips to popular places. What's more, these programs are very flexible. Students can go anytime from one month to a year.

Another route is to do a summer work-study program. These programs give summer jobs to English learners. The U.S., Canada, and Australia are just a few places that have these programs. The job could be in a restaurant, in a factory, in a shop, or even on a farm. This gives learners the opportunity to hear and use English in real life. Of course, the jobs pay a salary too!

University students can check to see if their university has any sister schools. They exchange students all of the time. Students can go to the sister school for just one semester, one year, or maybe longer.

Lastly, many university students choose to go to graduate school abroad. They need to take an exam first. The TOEFL and lELTS are the most

popular. Of course, students can prepare for these through self-study or classes.

The sudden appearance of a comet across the sky seemed to disturb the silence of the night. Therefore, people often took it for an omen signifying the coming of disasters. Plagues, famines, floods, earthquakes, war—all of these were considered to be foretold by the presence of comets. People saw a very bright comet not long after the death of Julius Caesar in 43 A.D, so they came to believe that the soul of this great man had gone to heaven. From then on, people started to believe in a superstition that the appearance of a comet foreboded the death of a celebrity.

However, later on comets were connected with harvest. In 1811, an extraordinarily bright comet appeared, and there happened to be a rich

(4)

harvest of grapes that year. The same thing happened again in 1858, when the famous comet Donati came into people's view to coincide with another rich harvest of grapes. Therefore, the appearance of bright comets was believed to represent the production year of good wine. Actually, most comets only came close to the Sun once and then never returned.

However, some comets were periodical, and the most famous one was Comet Halley, whose orbit was identified in 1705 by an English astronomer E. Haaley, and thus it was name after him. As a periodical comet, Comet Halley revolves around the sun every seventy-six years.

The term blue moon has been used for quite a long time – more than four hundred years. There have been a number of meanings associated with this term over the years. The phrase most frequently used these days, “once in a blue moon,” is based on the scientific phenomenon of the moon actually appearing blue due to dust or smoke in the atmosphere.

This was the case in 1883, when the Indonesian volcano Krakatau exploded. It spewed so much ash that sunsets turned green and the moon appeared blue all around the world for almost two years. In 1951, forest fires in Alberta, Canada, created a cloud of smoke in the sky, thus giving the

moon a bluish hue as far away as Newfoundland. These instances, along with a number of others, established the existence of blue-colored moons.

The second full moon in a single month is also called a blue moon. Although the hue of this moon does not change, records show that the Maine Farmers’ Almanac in 1937 marked the occurrence in one month of two full

moons in different colors -- the first in red, and the second in blue. Hence, this phenomenon is also called a blue moon.

Sightings of a blue—colored moon or the chance of two full moons falling in a month are rare. So rare, in fact, that one might say they take place once in a blue moon.

53. According to the passage, the existence of a blue moon ___________ (A) has nothing to do with science.

(B) has not yet been proved true. (C) has much to do with air pollution.

(D) is associated with the position of the earth.

54. Which of the following cases did not contribute to the existence of a blue moon?

(A) The explosion of the Indonesian volcano Krakatau. (B) The occurrence of forest fires in Alberta, Canada. (C) A second full moon in a single month in 1937. (D) The crash of an airplane.

55. He does it once in a blue moon means ____________. (A) he volunteers to do it

(B) he does it only when he feels blue (C) he seldom does it

(D) he does it regularly
