The Antarctic is becoming a popular place for a vacation. Over 37,000 tourists visit every year to see its spectacular ice, snow, and wildlife. The season starts in early November and finishes in early

March. The most popular way tourists visit is on a cru ise ship. However, these cruises are not like Caribbean or Mediterranean luxury cruises.

Although on the ship conditions can be quite comfortable, the bad

weather and danger make this vacation a tough experience. For example, in November 2007, the cruise s hip Explorer sank, but fortunately none of the 154 people on board were killed.

Yet for those interested in wildlife and environment, an Antarctic vacation is a wonderful opportunity to experience something new and to photograph whales and other sea life. Vacations cost several

thousand dollars and last between eight and 15 days. Most tourists live on the cruise ships, which helps to reduce the impact on the

environment, but some ca mp on the ice.

Because of concern over the effect on the environme nt of all these tourists, in 1991, the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) was set up. Its goal is to promote environmentally responsible travel to the Antarctic. The number of tourists allowed on the ice is restricted to around 100 at a time. Between 1750 and 1950, there was a large increase in city living in Europe and America. During that time, the number of people living in cities in these places grew from 15 million to 423 mi llion. Another wave of big city development is now beginning in other areas,

particularly in Asia and Africa. Some people think that cities in these regions will grow faster than in other areas.

Of course, such fast growth will bring challenges. As new streets and roads are constructed, traffic problems will increase. Beautiful parks ma y be re moved to make space for ugly parking lots. Large

numbers of people who have to live in small spaces will probably me e t with difficulties, too.

However, this growth will also bring some welcome changes. The bigger a city gets, the bigger its businesses get. Successful businesses contribute between one -half and four-fifths of the money a country makes each year. However, in order for the businesses to succeed, they must have places for the workers to live. If growing cities in Asia and Africa can provide clean, safe housing, the future of the people moving there should be a very good one.

IQ is short for “intelligence quotient” and refers to a score from an intelligence test. These tests were introduced by French psychologist Alfred Binet in 1905. Binet was interested in the connection between a child’s actual age and their mental age. However, it wasn’t until the American Lewis Terman revised Binet’s formula in 1916 that the

physical age multiplied by 100. IQ is supposed to test intellig ence regardless of age or environmental factors, yet nume rous studies show that environmental factors can strongly influence IQ. Children who are breast-fed, for exa mple, often score higher, and kids with healthier diets also perform better. Your birthdate could have an effect, too. Kids born late in the year can miss the cutoff date for a year group and start school late. Research has shown such children have lower IQs. More strangely, a Danish study showed that men with low IQs were at greater risk of con cussion.
