Some people like spiders, and some are nervous around them—and a few suffer from arachnophobia. Most people have little understanding of arachnophobia, but Dr.

Hunter Hoffman is an expert in this area. He helps patients overcome this specific phobia using virtual reality (VR) technology. To him, virtual reality isn't just about gaming anymore. In the simulated environment, his patients gain confidence to face the challenges in the real world.

Here is a successful story to demonstrate VR’s medical value. Miss Muffet used to be terrified of spiders. For years, she remained in fear and eventually became unable to leave the house. The loneliness depressed her; her life was turning unbearable. Dr. Hoffman worked with computer engineers for weeks to create a virtual world full of spiders. Miss Muffet first wore a special headset to enter the VR filled with visual and sound effects. Day after day, she gradually became less afraid of them. Finally, Miss Muffet was able to hold a real spider in her hand! It was a thrilling moment for both doctor and patient.

Few people suffer from their phobias to the extent Miss Muffet did. Dr. Hoffman and his team offer a new option to patients in need. Since virtual technology has shown the potential to cure arachnophobia and transform the patient’s life, Dr.

Hoffman continuously looks for effective ways to help more patients with other phobias. Perhaps similar psychological difficulties will soon be an issue of the past.
