beverage, currency exchange, etc.) increased by 13% year-on-year to MOP 306.49 billion; Expenditure amounted to MOP 134.53 billion, up by 11%.
- Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy reached MOP 186.45 billion, an increase of 16%.
- Gross Fixed Capital Formation soared by 42% year-on-year, at MOP 3.19 billion, owing to a substantial increase in construction projects and electronic gaming equipment.

Receipts and Expenditure
Total Receipts of the Gaming Sector increased by 14%
year-on-year to MOP 306.82 billion, of which Receipts from Gaming & Related Services rose by 13% to MOP 306.49 billion. Besides, rising cash flows brought about an upsurge in Interest Receipts, from MOP 139 million in 2011 to MOP 335 million, an increase of 141% year-on- year.
Receipts of the Gaming Sector registered double-digit year-on-year growth over the past five years except in 2009. In addition, Receipts of the sector have exceeded MOP 200 billion since 2011.
Total Expenditure amounted to MOP 137.64 billion, up by 11% year-on-year. Expenses on Purchase of Goods, Commission Paid & Customer Rebate amounted to MOP 102.52 billion (74% of total), up by 8%; Operating Expenses (MOP 17.54 billion) and Compensation of Employees (MOP 14.47 billion) also increased by 24%
and 17% respectively year-on-year. On the contrary, Non- operating Expenditure (e.g. depreciation, interest paid, etc.) totalled MOP 3.11 billion, sharing only 2% of Total Expenditure.
Both Receipts and Expenditure of the gaming enterprises recorded continuous growth over the past five years, with Receipts being more than double the amount of Expenditure, indicating that the profit before deduction of special gaming tax has kept increasing.

External Payments decreased by 46% year-on-year to MOP 4.01 billion (3% of Total Expenditure), on account of a notable decline in Purchase of Goods, Commission Paid &
Customer Rebate.
Payments made abroad for Purchase of Goods, Commission Paid & Customer Rebate decreased significantly by 62% year-on-year to account for 46% of External Payments.
External Payments for Operating Expenses (41% of total) increased by 3% year-on-year, of which payments for Materials Acquired (MOP 438 million) increased by 30% to take up a significant share of 27%.
Despite a substantial increase in expenses on Marketing, Market Research & Publicity, the corresponding payment made abroad (MOP 199 million) decreased by 21% year- on-year.

Gross Value Added and Gross Fixed Capital Formation
Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy totalled MOP 186.45 billion, up by 16%
year-on-year.
Gross Fixed Capital Formation soared by 42% year-on-year, on account of a 45% increase in construction projects (MOP 1.0 billion) due to the acquisition, reconstruction and alteration of buildings by gaming enterprises, as well as an 82% surge in electronic gaming equipment (MOP 738 million) upon an increase in acquisition.

Compensation of Employees and Operating Expenses
Compensation of Employees amounted to MOP 14.47 billion, (11% of Total Expenditure). Remuneration in Cash (MOP 13.33 billion) rose by 16% year-on-year to account for 92% of Compensation of Employees; meanwhile, Contributions to Pension Funds, Provident Funds & Social Security and Payments in Kind each shared 4%.
Operating Expenses (MOP 17.54 billion) accounted for 13%
of Total Expenditure, with expenses on Complimentary Goods & Services (e.g. hotel accommodation, food &
beverage, ferry & air tickets, tickets for cultural and entertainment performances) amounting to MOP 7.85 billion (45% of Operating Expenses).
Expenses on Marketing, Market Research & Publicity soared by 61% year-on-year to MOP 3.12 billion, accounting for 18% of Operating Expenses.

Coverage
Coverage of the Survey comprises enterprises operating in gaming activities in Macao in 2012. Registry of enterprises comes from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) and supplemented with information from the Financial Services Bureau.
Glossary
Enterprise: An enterprise is a legal entity that has decision-making autonomy of its principal function and resource usage, and engages in economic activities in one or more locations. If one or more institutional units co-exist in a single location but each has its own autonomy in making decisions, each of them constitutes an enterprise.
Compensation of Employees: The sum of wages and salaries, payments in kind, and other benefits paid to employees.
Operating Expenses: The total amount of expenses on goods and services supplied to the enterprise by a third party. It includes expenses on materials acquired; water supply; fuel; electricity; repairs and maintenance; rent of establishments; rent of machinery and equipment; rent of vehicles; premiums on non-labour insurance; bank charges; marketing, market research and publicity;
business travels; computer and information; uniform; food and beverage; complimentary ferry and air tickets; complimentary hotel rooms; other contractual services and other operating expenses.
Purchase of Goods, Commission Paid and Customer Rebate: Include the value of purchase of goods by the enterprise for the purpose of resale, net of any discounts. Commission refers to service payments to the agents or junket promoters who are not employees of the enterprise. Customer Rebate is the net value of rebate to customers, in the form of cash and/or casino chips.
Receipts from Gaming & Related Services: Receipts from providing gaming activities; food and beverages; gratuities; currency exchange and other related services but exclude interest received and insurance claims.
Gross Value Added: Equals receipts from gaming & related services; plus changes in inventories; minus purchases of goods and services for sale; commission paid; customer rebate and operating expenses.
Gross Fixed Capital Formation: Equals the value of total acquisitions of new, used and self-produced fixed assets, less the proceeds from sales of fixed assets. Fixed assets include buildings; furniture; computer software; machinery and equipment;
vehicles; electric and mechanic gaming machines and other durable goods with a usable span of one year or more. Also included are major repairs, alterations and extensions made to the existing assets.
