Coverage of the Survey on Manpower Needs and Wages of the Gaming Sector for the fourth quarter of 2010 excluded junket promoters and junket associates.
Paid Employees
At the end of the fourth quarter of 2010, the Gaming Sector had 44 806 employees, up by 1.8%
year-on-year.
Analyzed by occupations that are directly related to betting services, 19 149 were dealers, up by 4.8% year-on-year; 11 923 were hard & soft count clerks, cage cashiers, pit bosses, casino floorpersons, betting service operators, etc., down by 1.0%.
In addition, 5 171 were casino & slot machine attendants, security guards, surveillance room operators, etc., down by 2.1% year-on-year.

Vacancies and Turnover of Employees
With a major gaming and tourism project coming into operation, number of vacancies of the Gaming Sector surged by almost nine-fold year-on-year to 3 761 at the end of the fourth quarter of 2010, with 2 121 for dealers, 1 037 for hard & soft count clerks, cage cashiers, pit bosses, casino floorpersons, betting service operators, etc., and 223 for services and sales workers.
Job vacancy rate of Gaming Sector (7.9%) rose substantially by 7.0 percentage points year-on-year, with that for dealers (10.0%) and hard & soft count clerks, cage cashiers, pit bosses, casino floorpersons, betting service operators, etc. (8.5%) showing substantial increases.

In terms of recruitment prerequisites, 68.3% of the vacancies required no working experience;
75.0% required senior secondary education or higher and 24.5% required junior secondary education or lower. Besides Cantonese, other preferred language skills were Mandarin (28.3%) and English (23.9%).

With respect to the indicators that measure the inflow and outflow of human resources of the sector, the employee recruitment rate of the Gaming Sector was 5.9% in the fourth quarter of 2010, up by 1.0 percentage point year-on-year, whilst the employee turnover rate stayed unchanged at 4.1%.

Earnings
In December 2010, average earnings of full-time employees of the Gaming Sector stood at MOP15 700, up by 4.0% year-on-year. Average earnings of full-time resident employees increased by 4.8% year-on-year to MOP15 530, while that of full-time non-resident employees dropped by 1.8% to MOP19 840.
Average earnings of dealers increased by 2.6% over December 2009 to MOP13 610 and that of hard & soft count clerks, cage cashiers, pit bosses, casino floorpersons, betting service operators, etc.
rose by 5.1% to MOP19 330. Average earnings of casino & slot machine attendants, security guards,
surveillance room operators, etc. amounted to MOP10 400, up by 3.4% year-on-year.

y According to the “International Standard Classification of Occupations” of the International Labour Organization, positions such as dealers, casino floorpersons, cage cashiers, etc. are grouped under “Clerks”.
y Earnings refer to the amount paid to employees for the hours worked or services provided during the reference period, including basic salary, regular allowances, subsidies, gratuities, overtime payments and regular payments-in-kind. Excluding double-pay, year-end bonuses, profit-sharing and other similar bonuses.
