DOH Requires Warning Labels on Tamiflu
A
fter the very first case of a behavioraldisorderfrom Tamiflu was reported, Taiwan has become the third country that demands warninglabelson the drug.A seventeen-year-old boy sufferedhallucinationsafter taking Tamiflu, which wasprescribedby his doctor.
He strange behavior such as listening to his MP3 player and walking around his classroom in the middle of an exam. Because of this,abnormalbehavior, his parents took him back to the doctor to be again.
After he stopped taking Tamiflu, he went back to normal.
Due to people’s fears about avian flu, Tamiflu became an success when it hit Taiwan’s prescription drug market three years ago. Some people have even tried tostockpileit in the event of a major bird fluepidemic. Some doctors have indicated that Tamiflu is a safe anti-flu drug which can block or kill viruses. However, there have been some side effects, such asrashesanddizziness, which go away after a couple of days. They have also claimed that its side effects are strongly related to anindividual’s health status. Other doctors, however, that it should be a doctor’sresponsibilityto evaluatea patient’s symptomsbefore prescribing Tamiflu, and that it is not for use in thetreatmentof the common cold.
On the other hand, health officials have claimed that there was no detailed of this teenager’s abnormal symptoms. However, due to many similar reported in Japan, it was thought necessary to provide warnings with the drug. The DOH therefore has decided to that warning labels be put on Tamiflu to alert people to the possible risks of taking the drug.

VT Killer’s Motivation Still a Mystery
I
n the wake ofthe mass killings at Virginia Tech University, many people are trying tomake sense ofwhat drove 23 year-old Cho Seung-Hui to go on his rampage. From all reports, Cho was a very troubled person. He was described by his former roommates and classmates at Virginia Tech as beingwithdrawn andantisocial. As it turned out, he was not onlydepressedbut also very angry. In avideotapedmessage he sent to an American television station, he blamed those around him for causing the events that he was planning to carry out. For many of those who knew Cho, it was the first time they had ever heard him say anything. Like many mass killers who came before him, Cho’s anger didn’t just slowly emerged to the surface, but rather exploded out of him like the bullets from his handguns.Surprisingly, Cho was described by an early childhood friend as being a normal,intelligent, well-liked student when in elementary school. As he grew older, however, his behavior changed for the worse. By the time he entered university, Cho had exhibitedexceptionallyantisocial behavior. This included taking pictures of people without theirconsentand evenstalkingsome of his female classmates. In December of 2005, Cho was temporarily hospitalized to treat what a judge described as “mental illness” that took the form of depression and emotionalunresponsiveness. It was determined by the judge that Cho was a threat not only to himself, but to others as well. As Cho’s violentoutburst proved, the danger that he posed to others was very realindeed. The real reasons behind his outburst, however, may never be fully understood.
