Submitting paper and presentation

During work from Oct., 2013 to Sept, 2014 in the Department of Civil Engineering in National Cheng Kung University, I implemented field surveys of erosion measurement and electric resistivity measurement in mudstone area in Siao-liu-qiu islands (小琉球) and in Tian-liao moonscape world (田 寮月世界) in southwestern Taiwan. The mudstone in this area has caused serious land denudation hazards every year and formed widespread badlands without vegetation due to rapid weathering and surface wash erosion during the heavy rainstorm in the rainy season. In addition, I submitted a paper which entitled “Rapid weathering and erosion of mudstone induced by salt water migration near a slope surface” to Journal of Hydrologic Engineering (JHE) in American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE), and the paper was accepted. I have taken part into the research to reveal the reason for forming processes of barren badlands. In our paper submitted to the ASCE, the salt water migration within the mudstone slope surface has been revealed for the first time by using in situ monitoring for 15 months from Oct., 2009. This result was also presented on the Korea-Japan-Taiwan 2014 Joint Conference on Civil Engineering which held at Pukyung National University in Pusan in Korea on Aug., 2014

measured erosion depth on Oct., 2013, Feb., 2014, and May, 2014 in the dry season (Oct.−Apr.). During the dry season, almost no erosion occurred near the slope surface (Fig. 1), and this result was corresponding to the previous research which made in Tian-liao moonscape world (Higuchi et al. 2013, CATENA).

Electric resistivity survey in Tian-liao moonscape world

We made the electric resistivity measurement on the mudstone slope surface in Chong-der where is 1 km east from Tian-liao moonscape world in dry and rainy seasons. On Mar 2014 in the dry season, the mudstone slope surface has high resistivity (Fig. 2) due to lower water contents, while on Jul 2014 in the rainy season, the slope surface has low resistivity (Fig. 3) due to higher water content. The result of seasonal change of resistivity according to moisture condition supported and corresponded to our previous study made by in situ monitoring (Higuchi et al. 2014 in press, JHE). Aforementioned results of erosion rates and electric resistivity near the slope surface were helpful to support our previous studies and strengthened generality from our view about mudstone weathering and erosion processes which have been researched.

Has the expected goal of recruitment been achieved?

Yes. Dr. Higuchi kept on his study in mudstone, and he inspired our new study fields in mudstone slope and the electric resistant image. In addition, his stay made the students can talk in English.

What are the methods, professional knowledge, and progress of the research, teaching, or R&D and management work?

After discussions with Dr. Higuchi, we made new investigation sites at Shiao-liu-qiu island. In addition, we applied electric resistivity image to mudstone slopes during the dry season. Based on the foundation built by Dr. Higuchi, we can get the results regarding to the erosions of mudstone during the raining season in the near future.

How have the research, teaching, or R&D and management results of the employed person given benefit to the project (or your unit)?

We published a paper to Journal of ASCE during his study in Taiwan, and also had a presentation in an international conference. In addition, Dr. Higuchi helps our laboratory and department to conduct internationalization through his communications with faculty members and students. The students can also learn about the Japanese training from Dr. Higuchi.

How has the employed person, during his or her term of employment, benefited your unit or the relevant domestic academic field?

Dr. Higuchi’s major is the mudstone erosion, which is a field that rare researchers have conducted. During his study in Taiwan, we can closely talk to him regarding to his researches. Actually, many unclear parts in his thesis were clarified. In addition, we use new technologies such as LIDAR to quantify the mud erosion and electrical resistant image to clarify water movement of the mudstone slope during the dry/raining season. All the researches are new in Taiwan and we may get good results in the very near future.

1. Set up and measure the mudstone erosion at Shiao-liu-qiu island; 2. Conducted electric resistant image to mudstone slope;

4. Joined the Korea-Japan-Taiwan 2014 Joint Conference and had a presentation.
