COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to examine the content of acute medical-surgical patient problems in depth. The diagnostic procedure and therapeutic interventions will be explored and skills relevant to the practice of advanced medical-surgical nursing will be practiced.
OBJECTIVES:
At the completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. performance and interpretation of basic diagnostic procedures.
2. Explain the rationale of therapy in relation to pathophysiological processes.
3. Perform therapeutic and emergency procedures,
4. Describe the nurses' role related to diagnostic procedures with selected health problems.
5. Identify current primary literature related to the advanced medical-surgical nursing practice.
6. complete the assigned practice with effective skills.
CONDUCT OF THE COURSE:
The class will be held at clinical setting. For each class, expert guest speakers will make grant round for specific clinical setting, discuss current diagnostic and therapeutic procedure for medical-surgical patients, demonstrate the procedures commonly used at the setting. Students are responsible for identification of current literature for each class and participation through the class discussion and practice.
REQUIREMENTS:
For each class, the students are expected to find and read an English article related to the topic. The student should write a summary and a question of the article.
Both the summary and the question should be typed, starting with the complete reference and will be due on the day that topic is presented. The question may be inspired by the article or simply of interest to the student. A copy of the article that has been summarized should be handed in with the summary. The students are also required to submit a reflection report related to each of the presented topic.
EVALUATION:
1) 5 summaries and 5 questions 50%
2) 5 self-reflections 20%
3) Class participation 30%
