Eating customs are different in every part of the world. How people eat their food and when they choose to eat it are just as important as their actual diet. Social customs and traditions play a major role in developing the habits that people create for their meals.

In Brazil, people designed the national dish of feijoada to build a community. Feijoada is a bean stew that contains smoked meat. It is served over rice and includes several other side dishes. Because it is such a big meal and requires a large appetite, feijoada is usually eaten on Saturdays over several hours. This allows families to come together and share time with one another.

In addition, the habitual Spanish siesta provides people with more time together. Spaniards traditionally take a three-hour break in the afternoon. They leave their jobs and go home to eat a large, hot meal. Also, they can relax and be with their families. Afterwards, they usually take a nap before returning to work in the evening.

Meals are often designed as social events that allow friends and families to spend time with each other.

“Please turn off your cell phone and leave it off until we have arrived at the gate. The use of cell phones is not allowed during flight.” This familiar statement may soon become a sound of the past. To the delight of many travelers and the dismay of others, the use of mobile phones will no longer be banned on aircraft in the near future.

New technology will allow airline passengers to use their cell phones while traveling without causing problems for the mobile networks on the ground. Airlines will be able to install small base-stations right on the planes, and passengers’ phones will make contact with the plane’s base-station instead of the ground station.

The signals will then be sent from the plane’s station to the mobile network by satellite with no disruption to the networks.

Disruption to other passengers, though, is another story. While airlines are eager to allow the convenience of in-flight cell phone use, they also are aware that their customers will resent the additional noise while they are trying to watch a movie, listen to music, or just relax. They are trying to find ways to keep everyone, cell phone users and non-users alike, happy during flight. The new technology solves only half of the problem.

51. ( ) Cell phone use on the aircraft is ________.

(A) expected by the airlines to promote ticket sales.

(B) currently allowed, but some people are pushing for a ban on it.

(B) understand that they will need to deal with passenger complaints about cell phone use, with or without the ban of it.

(C) worry that cell phone use will put the safety of the aircraft at risk.

(D) believe that the majority of their passengers will be happy to be able to use their phones on the aircraft.

53. ( ) Which of the following statements about the way cell phones send signals is true?

(A) The base-stations installed on the aircraft will cause fewer problems than those on the ground.

(B) Signals sent by satellite will do less harm to the cell phone.

(C) Cell phones can send and receive better signals if used on the aircraft.

(D) Signals sent by the base-stations on the aircraft take more time and cost more money.

54.( ) In the third paragraph, the word “resent” is closest in meaning to ________.

(A) appreciate (B) dislike (C) understand (D) regret

(A) The ringing of cell phones will no longer bother passengers on the aircraft.

(B) The announcement that asks passengers not to use their cell phones has been annoying, so the airlines decide to cancel it.

(C) Passengers will no longer be discouraged from using their cell phones on the aircraft.

(D) The crew on the aircraft will no longer make any statements about cell phone use because most passengers pay no attention to them.
