摘要: This paper aims to examine the challenges and trends we, as an English educator at university, have encountered in Taiwan in a global era. Not all students in Taiwan but the majority lack basic four skills and

knowledge to carry on their study in English subjects at university. In this paper I am interested in investigating whether the issues are resulted in the changes of local environment where the younger generation has developed their own culture or due to their Taiwanese identity that against the study of English despite English has been acknowledged as the most common language applied in the worldwide. This paper will be divided into three parts. I will first review the theory of globalisation and glocalisation and its relation with English teaching and learning in a Chinese speaking community. Then I move to discuss the current phenomenon among students at a university in southern Taiwan. In the end I will like to find out whether glocalisation sould be regarded as a significant factor upon the issues of English teaching and learning at university level in Taiwan. Or the effect of globalisation is still remained as a driving force in the society of Taiwan in terms of English language teaching and learning.
