It must be difficult to direct a movie in a language that is not your own, especially when it involves a world that is unlike anything you have experienced. Taiwanese director Ang Lee had already won international acclaim for two Chinese-language films-The Wedding Banquet and Eat Drink Man Woman-when Hollywood offered him the chance to make a film based on a classic English novel. Lee accepted the challenge with enthusiasm.

In 1995, he directed a movie version of Jane Austen's novel Sense and Sensibility, a story of romance under the stifling social rules of early nineteenth-century England. Despite the language barrier and his limited cultural

knowledge, Lee was able to get the best out of his cast of established Shakespearean actors. The result was a beautiful, witty movie with a very "English" feel, and it was nominated for Best Film at that year's Oscars.

Even before making Sense and Sensibility, Lee was no stranger to challenge. The son of a high school principal from Pingtung, in southern Taiwan, he studied theater in Taiwan and in the United States, and then filmmaking at New York University. After graduation, he spent six years as a househusband, taking care of his children at home while his wife, Jane, supported the family. Lee wrote screenplays and waited for opportunities to direct. His big break came with The Wedding Banquet, which won the Golden Bear Award at the 1993 Berlin Film Festival.

Lee is a boyish man who speaks softly, often with his head bowed and his fingers knitted together. It is hard to imagine him directing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the Chinese martial arts film that won four Oscars in 2000.

However, Lee clearly loves a challenge, and he continues to create surprising and successful movies. In 2005, he explored new ground with the film Brokeback Mountain. A touching story of a love affair between two cowboys in Wyoming, the film attracted considerable praise and a number of awards, including three Oscars. Brokeback Mountain confirmed Lee's status as a top director and as an inspiration to talented Taiwanese filmmakers who dream of emulating his success.

31. ( ) Why is the movie Sense and Sensibility a challenge to Ang Lee?

(A) Because Ang Lee had trouble casting excellent actors and actresses.

(B) Because Ang Lee had encountered financial difficulty while making the movie.

(C) Because Ang Lee was not familiar with the cultural setting of the movie.

(D) Because Ang Lee grew up under stifling social rules.

32. ( ) When did Ang Lee first win international recognition?

(A) When he was invited to direct Sense and Sensibility.

(B) When he won the Academy Award nomination for Eat Drink ManWoman.

(C) When he made a film for his graduation thesis at New York University.

(D) When The Wedding Banquet won an award in Berlin.

33. ( ) It is hard to imagine Ang Lee directing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon because _______.

(A) he is soft-spoken and quiet when he is not directing (B) he did not have much knowledge about martial arts (C) he had not won international acclaim yet

(D) he had language barrier while trying to convey his ideas to his coworkers 34. ( ) Which of the following statements is NOT true?

Extreme weather causes danger worldwide. People in Taiwan, for example, are used to reading about damaging typhoons in summer. Usually, reports concentrate on deaths and injuries, and on damage to property. Sometimes, though, strange things happen during storms.

It is fairly common for large numbers of animals to come falling from the sky during or after a storm. On August 8, 2000, a shower of fish rained down on a coastal town in eastern England. It was probably caused by a small tornado out to sea, called a waterspout. It can pick up fish swimming near the surface. When the waterspout reaches land, it loses energy, and its contents fall to earth.

Dead birds sometimes drop unexpectedly out of the sky, partly frozen. It is likely they were swept up by the

powerful winds inside a thundercloud, then frozen like hailstones. In 1930, a magazine reported a storm in Vicksburg, Mississippi, in which a 20-centimeter-long turtle fell to earth wrapped in ice.

Such an incident doesn't just involve animals. On July 4, 1995, people in a small town in Iowa found soft drink cans everywhere. They came from a factory 150 miles away. Strangest of all are the "rains of blood" which have been

reported all over the world since ancient times. A possible explanation for them came in July 1968 in northern

Germany. A thunderstorm covered the land in red dust. It was sand blown up from the Sahara Desert and carried two thousand kilometers.

36. ( ) What was found in Iowa in the summer of 1995?

(A) A frozen turtle. (B) Soft drink cans. (C) Red dust. (D) Dead birds.

37. ( ) Why did the fish appear on the coast of eastern England?

(A) They swam there to escape from a waterspout.

(B) They lost energy and couldn't swim anymore.

(C) There was more food for the fish.

(D) A waterspout picked up the fish to the coast.

38. ( ) What causes dead birds to drop out of the sky?

(A) Hailstones in a thundercloud.

(B) Foggy sky.

(C) The winds inside a thundercloud.

(D) Extremely low temperature.

39. ( ) Which statement about the "rains of blood" is true?

(A) It actually refers to the sand from deserts.

(B) It occurs only in Europe.

(C) The first case happened in 1968 in Germany.

(D) It is believed that the rains of blood bring bad luck.

40. ( ) In the last paragraph, "it" refers to _______.

(A) The thunderstorm (B) The land of northern Germany (C) The Sahara Desert (D) Red dust
