Since January 2001, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) has been calculated using October 1999 to September 2000 as the base period. The consumption pattern has been derived from the Household Budget Survey 98/99. In this CPI series, housing rent includes both private and welfare housing. Furthermore, CPI(A) represents 54% of the households with an average monthly expenditure of MOP3,000 to MOP9,999 and CPI(B) accounts for 26% of the households with an average monthly expenditure of MOP10,000 to MOP19,999.

In September 2004, Composite CPI was 95.22, up 0.67% over August, which has increased for six consecutive months. For the 12 months ended September 2004, the average Composite CPI rose 0.01% over the previous period, marking the end of the 5-year long deflation since 1999.
Due to upward adjustment of school tuition fees in the new academic year and rising prices in men’s clothing and footwer, fresh vegetables and fruit, the indices of Education and leisure, Clothing and footwear and Foodstuffs and beverages rose by 1.94%, 1.59% and 1.38% respectively over August. On the other hand, lower prices in air tickets and outbound package tours after the summer peak season led to decreases in the indices of Transport and communications (-0.70%) and Other goods and services (-0.38%).
Composite CPI in September showed a notable year-on-year increase of 2.12%. Average Composite CPI for the first three quarters of 2004 went up 0.48% compared with the same period of 2003.
CPI(A) and CPI(B) increased 0.94% and 0.64% respectively over August.
