I am not a good athlete, so I joined the cheering team. Many of my friends also joined. We sang together and waved flags.

Some of us even performed simple dances. We wanted to encourage our schoolmates to do well in the competitions. I think it helped. Anyway, we had fun!

I was a helper on Sports Day. I helped organise the races.

Before the races, I had to make sure that the runners were standing behind the starting line. Also, I had to give water to the runners during the race. I was glad to help on Sports Day and I want to help again.

Tom Lee (Class 6D)

I will remember this Sports Day for a very long time. Why? I ended up going to hospital! I ran in three races and came first in all of them. However, just after finishing the third race, I fell down and hurt my ankle. I had to go to hospital and spent four hours there. Fortunately, the injury was not serious. I am fine now.

Tam:

Well, Lily, welcome back to Hong Kong. I know you were born here.

You studied in Canada, or was it England?

After secondary school in Hong Kong, my parents sent me to Canada in 1970. I entered university there at age 16 and studied music. At the same time, I began writing. I also loved reading books, both in Chinese and in English. After my studies in Canada, I worked in England for a few years.

You have won many prizes, Lily. Tell me about them, would you?

Well, I’ve never won any prizes for my piano playing! I loved playing the piano but I wasn’t that good. My writing is better. The first prize I got was in 1980 for the book ‘Happy Memories’. It is about children growing up in Hong Kong in the 1960s. They faced many problems but also had good times. Then, two years later, I won a prize for a book of short stories. The stories are about very young learners in Hong Kong and Singapore.

Jackson:

I learned that you were seriously injured in a car accident in Canada.

Yes. It happened two years ago when I was driving home from work.

I suddenly heard a loud boom. The next thing I knew I was lying in a hospital bed.

How long did you stay in hospital?

For nearly two months. I’m better now but I can only write a little.

Also, I had to give up playing the piano. My hands were hurt in the crash.

Now you have retired. What is your life like today?

I live in Canada most of the time with one of my children. She has two kids, a boy and a girl. I’m like most grandmothers, I think. We enjoy spending time with our grandchildren.

You’re a wonderful grandma, Lily. It’s been lovely chatting with you.

Thank you so much.
