Part A. 讀完下列一篇文章後,選出一個適當正確的答案

It is a matter of common observation that although money incomes keep going up over the years, we never seem to become much better off. Prices are rising continuously. This condition is termed one of inflation; the money supply is becoming inflated so that each unit of it becomes less valuable. We have grown accustomed in recent years to higher and higher rates of inflation. What could be bought ten years ago for one dollar now costs well over eight dollars. Present indications are that this rate of inflation is tending to rise rather than to fall. If in the real world our money incomes go up at the same rate as prices, one might think that inflation does not matter. But it does. When money is losing value, it lacks one of the qualities of a good money —stability of value. It is no longer acceptable as a store of value; and it becomes an unsuitable standard of deferred payments. Nobody wants to hold a wasting asset, so people try to get rid of money as quickly as possible. Inflation therefore stimulates consumer spending, and deters saving.

51. If incomes and prices rise together, so the writer argues, . (A) there will be no more market fluctuations

(B) money will hold its value

(C) inflation will remain to be a problem (D) inflation poses no problem

52. Over the years, our incomes have been increasing, and we . (A) seem to prosper at a quicker rate

(4)

(B) are actually no better, if not worse, in our financial condition (C) can afford to buy more of the things that we want

(D) have managed to keep prices down 53. When money loses it value, .

(A) it is no longer stable

(B) its rate against gold will be kept at the same level (C) goods will lose their value, thus creating no new problems (D) incomes will keep stable to lessen the problems of inflation 54. In a period of inflation, people are likely to .

(A) invest heavily on the stock market (B) save money

(C) hold on to money as a dependable asset (D) spend money and not bother to save Part B

Meteors are sometimes called shooting stars. Meteors are pieces of material which float around in the sky. When one of these objects gets too near the earth, it is pulled toward the earth. As the object falls toward the earth, it travels very fast. As it rushes through the layer of air around our earth, it gets so hot that it really burns. It is the light from this fire which we see streaming through the air and think of as a shooting star.

Most of these objects burn up before they reach the earth. These are called meteors. If the objects do not burn up entirely, they are called meteorites. Most meteorites are very small, but a few very large ones have fallen to our earth.

55. A meteor burns

(A) when it collides with a shooting star in the sky.

(B) because it becomes very hot as it floats around in the sky.

(C) when it travels very fast through the air around the earth.

(D) because it is made of the kind of material that burns easily.

56. Meteors and meteorites

(A) are composed of totally different kinds of material.

(B) can be found on our earth, because some of them reach the earth before they burn up.

(C) are usually small pieces of material, though a few of them can be very large.

(D) are the same objects, though they are named differently.

57. The passage above tells us

(A) that meteorites do not travel so fast through the air as meteors.

(B) that, if meteors reach the earth without burning up completely, they are called meteorites.

(C) that both meteors and meteorites become shooting stars when they get close to the earth.

(D) that a great number of large meteorites have been found on our earth.
