Genus Bathrips Bhatti

Bathrips Bhatti, 1962a: 34. Type species: Taeniothrips melanicornis Shumsher Singh, 1946.

Antennae 8-segmented, segments III and IV with forked sense cone. Pronotum with 2 pairs of posterolateral setae. Forewing with 4-5 setae on lower vein, 3 setae on scale. Only the following two species in the world.

Female body length 1.3-1.4 mm on slides. In dark color, abdomen lighter, tergites II-VIII with dark antecostal ridge; antennal segments dark brown; wings brownish; legs light yellow.

Head wider than long, cheeks smooth, occiput with several rows of reticulations. One anteocellar seta on each side of anterior ocellus, one pair of interocellar setae between posterior ocelli, one pair of ocullar setae just behind posterior ocelli. Maxillary palpi 3-segmented.

Antenna 8-segmented, segments III and IV each with a forked sense cone.

Pronotum with 2 long setae each on posterolateral angular, median of posterior margin with 2 pairs of setae, inner pair longer. Forewing with 18-19 costal setae, upper vein with 5 basal setae and 3 distal setae, lower vein with 4-5 setae.

Abdominal tergites I and II and laterals of tergites III-VIII with transverse striae; tergites VIII without posterior comb; tergite X not split. Sternites III-VII with 3 pairs of posterior marginal setae, no discal setae.

Male unknown.

Distribution: Taiwan, India.

Habitat: Osmanthus sp., tea (Camelia sinensis), Jasmine sp.

Abdominal tergites I-VII with polygonal reticles; anterior and lateral of tergite VIII with reticulations, posterior comb complete; tergite IX with 5 pairs of long setae; tergite X not split.

Sternites with discal setae.

Male body shape and color similar to female, but smaller, about 1 mm in length. Abdominal segment IX about twice the length of segment VII, with one pair of thorn-like setae in middle, situated on a protuberant base. Not recorded in Taiwan.

Distribution: Taiwan, mainland China, India, Japan, South Pacific islands.

Habitat: Leguminosae.

Body with pale yellow and brown color: head pale yellow, occiput light brown, red pigment in compound eyes conspicuous; prothorax pale yellow, pronotum with 2 longitudinal brownish bands; pterothorax pale yellow mixed with light brownish color; abdomen pale yellow, middle of tergites pale brown, form a T shape on tergites III-VIII; antennae dark brown, darker than any other parts of the body, paler only at distal end of segment III wings brownish; legs pale yellow.
