Same-day visitors used to account for the larger share of the total visitor arrivals in Macao. In 2015, same-day visitors represented 53.4% of the total visitor arrivals. With the continuous improvement of tourism facilities, coupled with an increase in tourist attractions, number of overnight visitors surpassed that of same-day visitors for the first time in 2016, taking up 50.7% of the total arrivals, up by 4.1 percentage points year-on-year. In 2017, the proportion of overnight visitors increased further to 52.9%. Among the visitors from Mainland China that comprised more than two-thirds of the total visitor arrivals, overnight visitors accounted for 53.7% in 2017, up by 3.6 percentage points over 2016.

Analysed by main purpose of visit, most of the visitor arrivals came to Macao for travel/vacation, with 17.39 million in 2017 (53.3% of total arrivals). Arrivals coming for shopping totalled 2.60 million (8.0%); those coming for gaming and for visiting relatives totalled 1.78 million (5.4%) and 1.95 million (6.0%) respectively, whereas those coming for business and for attending MICE events totalled 1.46 million (4.5%) and 0.31 million (0.9%) respectively.

On the other hand, figures showed that per-capita spending of overnight visitors was far higher than that of same-day visitors. In 2017, per-capita spending of overnight visitors was about 3.8 times the spending of same-day visitors; meanwhile, total spending of overnight visitors was 4.3 times that of same-day visitors.

Although the proportion of visitors coming to Macao for attending MICE events was not large, their per-capita spending was 83.8% higher than the overall average for all visitor arrivals.

As regards length of stay of visitors, the average length of stay of visitor arrivals in Macao held stable at 1.0 day from 2012 to 2014, and climbed up to 1.1 days in 2015 and 1.2 days in both 2016 and 2017. The average length of stay of visitors from Mainland China, the largest source market of Macao, increased by 0.1 day year-on-year to 1.2 days in 2016 and rose further by 0.1 day to 1.3 days in 2017.

Visitors in Macao spent more on shopping and accommodation. In 2017, the proportions of shopping spending of Mainland visitors (52.3% of total) and particularly those travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme (60.5%) were far higher than the corresponding shares for visitors from other countries/places. Visitors from Hong Kong spent the most on food &

beverage (33.5% of total), while other visitors generally spent more on accommodation (ranging from 35.6% to 45.5%).

3.5 Development of Major Non-gaming Industries

As can be seen from the value-added based industrial structure of Macao, the gaming sector is undoubtedly the leading sector of the economy of Macao. Alongside the flourishing gaming sector, other major non-gaming industries have shown significant growth in recent years. In this report, major non-gaming industries consist of: (1) the construction sector;

(2) hotels and similar activities; (3) wholesale & retail trade; (4) restaurant & similar activities; (5) the transport, storage &

communications sector (including travel agencies); (6) financial activities (including banking, insurance & pension funding);

and (7) real estate & business activities (including real estate activities, renting & business activities).

During the period from 2013 to 2017, total receipts of the major non-gaming industries grew by 29.7% from MOP 286.16 billion in 2013 to MOP 371.18 billion in 2017. Among the service industries, the top three non-gaming industries having the largest growth in receipts were financial activities (+65.1%), real estate & business activities (+37.8%) and restaurant & similar activities (+33.5%). Meanwhile, receipts of the gaming sector declined by 26.2%.

From 2013 to 2017, the ratios of receipts of the gaming sector to receipts of the major non-gaming industries were 1:0.79, 1:0.99, 1:1.54, 1:1.59 and 1:1.39 respectively.

On the other hand, in terms of value added at current producers’ prices by the production approach, value added of the major non-gaming industries totalled MOP 119.12 billion, MOP 144.23 billion, MOP 145.33 billion, MOP 147.96 billion and MOP 157.30 billion from 2013 to 2017 respectively, up by 21.1%, 0.8%, 1.8% and 6.3% year-on-year; meanwhile, the respective rates of change in value added of the gaming sector were -1.9%, -32.6%, -2.9% and +17.5%. The ratios of value added of the gaming sector to that of the major non-gaming industries were 1:0.46, 1:0.57, 1:0.85, 1:0.89 and 1:0.81 respectively. The shares of the major non-gaming industries in gross domestic product from 2013 to 2017 were 29.0%, 33.2%, 40.8%, 41.5% and 39.6% respectively, an increase of 10.5 percentage points in four years.

Apparently, the gaming sector and the major non-gaming industries have showed good performance, whether in terms of receipts or value added. In recent years, the growth in some of the non-gaming industries even outpaced that in the gaming sector.
