In 2008, she achieved just that when she released her debut album, 19. 19 was an immediate success in the United Kingdom, entering the British charts at number one. The album got off to a slow start in the United States, but eventually topped the American charts. Adele won two Grammy Awards in 2009 for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. She had an even better year in 2011. Her album 21 was iTunes’ biggest seller, she was Billboard magazine’s Artist of the Year, and she was nominated for six Grammys. She even won three American Music Awards! But 2011 was bittersweet for Adele, and in November she underwent surgery for strained vocal chords. Once she’s recovered, she’ll begin working on her third album, which will no doubt be another huge success. (3-p.22-25)
