Plastic surgery grew fastest in the 20th century, 1 World War II, when doctors

It can also 2 the appearance of people who are healthy but don’t like the way they look. John F. Kennedy, U.S. President from 1961 to 1963, was a perfect example of an ideal leader. Surrounded with intelligent and talented advisors, he was smart, young, energetic, optimistic and charismatic. He also came from an important family, and had a beautiful wife. At the time, he was often compared to the mythical ruler of Camelot, King Arthur.

Being a great leader, his speeches were grand and influential, and his decisions and policies were important and far-reaching. People believed that America was strong and ideal and could do anything it wanted to do, and Kennedy was a leader that could guide it. He set America on a course to the Moon, signed the Civil Rights Act to ensure equal rights for blacks and all races, created the Peace Crops, and stood strong against the Soviet Union during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the construction of the Berlin Wall. Unfortunately, at the height of his power and popularity, he was assassinated. The entire nation mourned for him, and the terrible incident was even shot into films.

After Kennedy's death, events such as the Vietnam War, Watergate, and the Oil Crisis hurt the image of an always-right, unbeatable America. She has big eyes, perky pink ears and fuzzy fur that just begs to be stroked. But 8-week-old CC (short for copy cat) is no ordinary kitten. Introduced by Texas scientists in February, she is the world's first cloned cat, the product of a lab experiment.

Cloning is a high-tech way of breeding an animal that is an exact genetic copy of a parent. Scientists have cloned mice, pigs, goats and sheep. The Texas company that paid for the research that produced CC -Genetic Savings & Clone- hopes to clone people's pets!

To create CC, researchers at Texas A & M University took genes from a female cat named Rainbow and placed them into an egg cell from a cat named Allie. Genes are the chemical instructions that determine what an individual creature is like, from its size to its eye color. The egg developed inside Allie. On December 22, she gave birth to CC, who is genetically the same as Rainbow.

“It was exciting to witness,” says Lou Hawthorne, head of Genetic Saving & Clone. “She's such a cute cat.”

But not everyone was charmed by CC. “We must question the social purpose here,” says Wayne Pacele of the U.S. Humane Society. “More than 5 million cats are destroyed each year when shelters can't find homes for them. Why clone more cats?” “Just because you are capable of doing it,” says Pacele, “doesn't mean you should.”

Hawthorne is gambling that pet lovers will do almost anything to keep a beloved animal around, even if it means spending thousands to recreate Fluffy or Fido, and even if the clone is not an exact copy. CC, for instance, looks different from Rainbow because a cat's markings are not shaped by genes alone. And who knows if she'll act like Rainbow? Personality-perhaps the most valued trait in a pet-cannot be cloned.

51. According to the report, CC ________.

(A) is the first animal ever cloned (B) is the first cloned cat (C) is the last success in pet cloning (D) is born in a natural way

52. We can infer from the passage that CC ________. (A) will not survive longer than 8 weeks

(B) has many brothers and sisters (C) is more like Allie than Rainbow (D) has cost quite a great deal of money

53. We can reason from the passage that ________. (A) the company sees money in pet cloning (B) genes have nothing to do with what CC is like

(C) Lou Hawthorne himself is not satisfied with CC's look (D) Americans are willing to find homes for their pets 54. The report suggests that ________.

(A) everyone was glad to see CC

(B) pet cloning may be great business in the future

(C) personality will be easily cloned in the future for its important value

(D) cloned cats do not bring comfort to those cat owners whose cats were destroyed 55. Which of the following best serves as the title of the passage?

(A) CC and Rainbow

(B) How to Recreate Deceased Pets?

(C) When Will a Cloned Man Be Introduced? (D)The First Cloned Cat

Many, many years ago, I thought that a grown-up was someone who could drive a car. But when I finally was old enough to drive, I found out that I wasn’t a grown-up yet. Then, I figured that a grown-up was a person who could vote. But when I cast my first vote, I realized that I still wasn’t a grown-up. A little later, I decided that a grown-up was someone who went to college. But college wasn’t what helped me to become a grown-up either.

It wasn’t until I decided to get tested for HIV that I learned what really made someone a grown-up. I like to think, too, that as I learned what defined a grown-up, I also become one.

I had stopped by the free clinic where a friend of mine worked, and while I was waiting for her, one of the other volunteers asked me if I wanted to be tested. My immediate

(5)

reaction was, “Who, me?” As I thought about it for a while, though, I realized that the only reason not to be tested would be fear--- fear of testing positive, fear of facing the facts. I took a deep breath, and I got tested. Grown-ups get scared, but they don’t let fear keep them from doing what they need to do.

My test results, the clinic said, wouldn’t come back for ten days. Those were ten very long days. I spent lots of time thinking about what I would do if my results were positive. Who would I tell? Could I tell anyone? Was it really my problem if I had infected anyone? Would I have to change my life, or could I just pretend it wasn’t true? I wrestled with those questions and many more for days, deciding that, however awful it might be, I would have to tell my “exes” if my test was positive, and that my life would have to change drastically. I owed that to anyone I had ever loved. Besides, however unpleasant it may be, a grown-up has a sense of responsibility to other people.

The day my results came back, I thought that I might try to avoid the whole problem by just not showing up to get my results. The way, I’d be no better or worse off than I had been before the test. I could just forget about it. I could go on as I had been going. When the time came, though, I knew that I had to go find out, that I couldn’t ignore reality any longer. A grown-up has to learn to accept the real world.

The medical results of the test aren’t important to anyone but myself and my “exes,” but the mental results are important to anyone who has ever wondered what a grown-up is. I have discovered that grown-ups face fear, have a sense of responsibility, and learn to handle realities, even the grimmest ones. That’s a lot to aim for, and no one can do all that all the time. Everyone, though, can do it sometimes. Whatever your age, once you find out that it means to be a grown-up, you can always work to be one.

56. What helped the writer of the article realize what a grown-up really means? (A) Learning to drive a car.

(B) Going to college. (C) Being tested for HIV. (D) Casting his first vote.

57. According to the article, which of the following statement is FALSE?

(A) A real grown-up does get scared, but he won’t let fear stop him from doing what he needs to do.

(B) After the writer gets his test results, he will tell all people he knows about it to show

his sense of responsibility.

(C) Whatever the test result may be, the writer will face the reality with bravery. (D) Although it is difficult to be a grown-up, we can always work to become one if

we find out what it really means. 第

Weight loss is one of the most important issues for millions of people around the world. However, it’s not easy for many of them to find the right way to do it. Some try eating less. Others try different forms of exercise. In recent years, a choice that doesn’t require small amounts of food or much physical effort has become popular. It’s called the Atkins Diet.

With the Atkins diet, it is believed that the food group known as carbohydrates has led to most of today’s weight problem. These foods tend to be produced by people, and include things such as noodles, rice, and bread. The Atkins theory suggests carbohydrates create too much insulin in the body, which makes people hungry and causes health problems.

Food groups that are encouraged in this diet are protein--- such as red meat, chicken, and fish---as well as fat, which is found in many of these proteins. Since both protein and fat are found in nature---primarily in animals--- the body tends to deal with them more easily. This leads to less insulin in the body, which leads to quick weight loss over a short time.

However, there might exist some risks with this diet. Some researches suggest too much protein is unhealthy. The diet is also very different from those diets that people are used to, which often leads them to quit the Atkins Diet and gain all their weight back. A person should be careful before deciding to use this diet.

58. What is the author’s attitude toward the Atkins Diet? (A) He highly recommends it as a good way to lose weight.

(B) He reminds people to be careful before deciding to use this diet. (C) He thinks it is definitely not a good way to lose weight.

(D) He thinks it is safer and healthier, compared with other weight-loss diets. 59. What’s TRUE about the Atkins Diet?

(6)

hard to lose weight.

(B) Too much insulin in the body will make people feel full all the time. (C) The Atkins theory suggests that carbohydrates are healthy and necessary. (D) Everyone can use the Atkins diet to lose weight without any risk.
