04/01/2011 HKUST Signs Agreement with Peking University on Undergraduate and Postgraduate Student Exchange in Humanities and Social Science

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and its School of Humanities and Social Science, and Peking University (PKU) and its Humanities and Social Science disciplines have signed an agreement to enable the pursuit of mutually beneficial academic and research collaborations for students and faculty members in the Humanities and Social Science disciplines through participation in exchange programs.

Under this agreement, both universities will exchange undergraduate students and postgraduate students each beginning from two per semester in these disciplines from the current academic year.

"We are pleased with our growing and substantial collaboration with Peking University - the leading liberal arts university on the Mainland and one of the highly respected research universities in the world. This will form a strong

basis for a robust trilateral relationship with the University of Virginia (UVa) from the US, which also enjoys an excellent reputation," said HKUST Provost Prof Wei Shyy.

"By formalizing a long-term strategic partnership between HKUST and PKU, we want to ensure the smooth implementation of a wide range of cooperative activities at the PKU-HKUST-UVa Joint Institute on the PKU campus, and also on the HKUST campus starting from summer this year," Prof Shyy said.

The HKUST School of Humanities and Social Science is the first School in HKUST to officially enter into a

postgraduate exchange agreement. By elevating the postgraduate exchange from the School level to the University level, PKU wishes to expand joint postgraduate training and to combine complementary strengths to explore joint program development in selected areas leading to dual/joint degrees with HKUST.

HKUST Dean of Humanities and Social Science Prof James Z Lee said, "Creating incentives and opportunities for Hong Kong students to pursue dual degrees at the best universities in North America and Mainland China should enhance the quality and attractiveness of a UGC and HKUST education. As a university with a strong global outlook, we trust that this relationship will create strong synergy among the three universities in humanities and social science education and research."
