HKUST Appoints New Head of Civil and Structural
Engineering
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has appointed Prof Wilson Tang, a leading expert in uncertainty modelling and reliability methodologies, as the head of its Department of Civil and Structural Engineering (CSE).
A widely consulted specialist in risk, reliability, and decision analysis for engineering problems, Prof Tang has directed research projects sponsored by the US National Science Foundation, the American Petroleum Institute, the Office of Solid Waste Research and other agencies developing reliability methodologies in geotechnical, structural, construction, offshore and hydraulic
engineering.
"Hong Kong is my homeland. I find it more rewarding to work here," says Prof Tang after more than 30 years abroad. "I joined HKUST because it has an excellent campus environment and modern facilities for productive teaching and research.
"My aim is to increase interaction between the CSE Department and the local engineering community, improve the quality of postgraduate students and education, and raise private money for scholarship awards and research," Prof Tang says of his plans.
Prof Tang obtained his BS and MS degrees at MIT, and PhD degree from Stanford University. He began teaching at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1969 and became professor of civil engineering in 1980.
Prof Tang is credited with about 120 publications, including two widely used texts on probability concepts in engineering planning and design. Among his awards are the ASCE State-of-the-Art Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the UIUC Campus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Instruction.
