Popular Science Lecture Series Returns

HKUST and the Hong Kong Science Museum are again jointly sponsoring a popular science lecture series.τhis year's series will beg妞” July. Open to the public and f記eof char~e, the series will present topi臼 ofcurrent interest in science and technology. Th巳 speakerswill be pro

-fessors and lecturers from HKUST with particular expertise in their chosen fields. Six lectures have been scheduled, gener-ally on the last Sunday of each month from July through December

;

they will take place at 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. 組 the Lecture Hall of the Museum (2 Science Museum 划, TsimSha Tsui East).

Last year

s lecture series covered top-ics ranging from energy conservation to integrated circuits and consistently drew crowds of 100-200, particularly secondary school students and teachers.

Biotechnology and Food Production"

Professor Shain-dow Kung, Professor of Biology, will begin the series with a lecture on recent advances in plant breed-ing for food production. A synopsis of the lecture follows.

Food is essential to sustain life. Since all food is derived directly or indirectly from plants, selection and improvement of crop plants is critical to the survival and growth of human civilization. Among the 3,000 species of plants used for food, only 30 species are major crops. These 30 basic food crops are supplemented by about 15 major species of vegetables and 15 major species of fruit. For many years plant breeders and related scientists have worked diligently and skilfully to upgrade quality and raise yields by employ姐g various crop improvement techniques.

τhey have achieved eommendable results with impressive gains in productivity, but there are limitations to conventional plant

breeding technology. These limitations have stimulated the development of more advanced technologies.

tations of conventional hybridization techniques. In order to produce hybrid plants with much wider ranges of genetic variabilities, somatic hybrid plants were generated. The failure of somatic hybrid plants to be of immediate and economic value, in tum, stimulated the development of transgenic plant eng凶eering.

This lecture will briefly describe the road plant breeding has travelled from the era of hybrid plant production to a new era of transgenic plant engineering. This transition has been a response to the

HKUST FRESHMEN WIN COMPUTER

COMPETITION IN llTH HOUR

To their great su中rise-andthe surprise of competitors and coaches alike, HKUST

s team of freshmen beat teams of upperclassmen from other local tertiary institutions in the 1992 ACM (Association of Computing Machinery) Hong Kong Chapter Scholastic Programming Contest, held at Baptist Col-leg巴, 4July. Each of the seven teams was given six problems, two PCs, Turbo C and Pascal compilers, one printer and four hours to solve the problems. Team progress was shown on computer screens outside the competition hall up until 30 minutes before the end. At that time-with 30 minutes to go--HKU and CUHK were ahead, with two problems solved. When time was up and final results were in, the competition judges announced HKUST as the winner. According to coach Chung Kim-hang, who attended the competition, the response to the news was dead silence in the room. Finally HKUST

steam captain said,“Sorry, sir

;

are you sure?”He was. In the final 30 minutes, the team had solved three problems, clearly beating their competitors, all of whom were 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year students.

For their win, each member of the team received a certifi-cate, a CD-ROM drive with interface card and software. In addition the ACM trophy is being engraved with HKUST

s name and will be displayed in HKUST's Computer Science Department until next year

s competition.

How did the~ do it? The team suggests luck had a role

;

the coaches believe it is the calibre of th巳 studentsand the prepara~ tion they had-working on similar problems provided from other universities. Team selection b巴ganmonths ago. First there

After one month of training, a second exam winnowed the team to the final four, who have been preparing for the past ten weeks.

Let a Smiley be Your Umbrella

With all the rain this year, it may be a bit hard to keep a smile on your face, but I came across something on the Network that may help. Computer types, as you probably know, communicate over vast distances electronically, and to dat巳 mostofthes巳 communicationsare limited to sending messages using ordinary characters from the typewriter-like keyboards we all know and love. To add a bid of visual interest, the practice has grown up of using some typography to represent images. Among the earliest examples was a version of the Happy Face typed as follows:

If you have trouble seeing what this repr巴sents,tum the

symbol became know as a Smiley, and before long, a whole host of Smilies (some not really smiling) were invented. What follows are a few choice extracts from

He estimates about 60 students play or have interest, although school work limits the time they can devote to the pastime. The Club, together with the HK Po旬, jointlyorganised a city-wide competition in January, when 24 tables played, including four pairs from HKUST(two p泌的 ofundergraduates

New Student Canteen

Open in August

According to cu口entschedules, the new student C祖teenon LG7 will open for business in late August. EMO expects the new Phase II facilities to be handed over to the University on 10 August

;

Cafe de Coral will then move in, and will require another three weeks to get the kitchens and dining area ready.

The cuπent student canteen on LGl seats 600 people

;

the new canteen has a capacity to seat up to 1000. The greater space on LG7 will enable Cafe de Coral to expand its menu, offering a greater r阻geof dishes as well as being able to cook and serve individual set meals. In retail Cafe de Coral outlets, for certain dishes, customers order’時間ivea numbered ticket, and collect the food when their number is called. This method is being considered for the LG7 canteen.

Expansion of s~ace 祖d menus will be aαompanied by

ne臼SS紅y economising 油 otheraspects of the food service. In the new canteen, tray collection trolleys will be provided

t趾oughout the dining area, and customers will be asked to deposit their trays on these trolleys when finished. SAO expects this system to improve e血ciencyand to benefit all customers in the long run.
