PROMINENT CHINESE SCIENTIST TO SPEAK AT HKUST
Renowned Chinese hysicist and former President of Fudan University, Prof K
Xide Xie, will lecture on “T e Development of Science in China: Past, Present and Future” at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on 18 April 1996.
Prof Xie, who is currently Professor of Physics and Adviser at Fudan University in Shanghai, will focus on scientific achievements in China since 1978 and the measures taken to facilitate that development.
She will also discuss the scientific contributions of the ancient Chinese and of the period from 1949 to 1978. At the conclusion, she will look to the future, analyzing the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead for continued scientific development in China.
Highly regarded by the international academic community, Prof Xie has received honorary doctorates from universities in the US, Canada, UK and Japan.
She is an elected member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academ
1( of Arts and Sciences, and a Fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences and t e American Physical Society.
Prof Xie received her PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1951. She was President of Fudan University from 1983 to 1988.
