Associate Director of HKUST’s Research Center

The Hong Kong University of Science & Techno ogy announces the appointment of Dr Yuk Shan Wong as Associate Director of its Research Centre, Dr Wong, who assumes his position immediately, will be working in

research and development, bridging the gap between pure academic research and its application in industry and commerce.

“We hope to strengthen ties to fhe industrial sectors of Hong Kong and China,” says Dr Wong, “and cooperate with the scientific research sectors in China on multidisciplinary research and development projects.”

Dr Wong has been actively participating in professional activities and community services for the past ten years. In 1988 he became Vice-President of The Society of Hong Kong Scholars, moving on to become President of the society from 1990 to 1992. From 1986 to 1990 he was the Treasurer and Vice- President of The Institute of Biology, Hong Kong. Dr Wong is now an Executive Board member of the newly established Hong Kong Institution of Science.

Dr Wong has wide industrial consultancy experience. In late 198Os, he had involved in technology transfer projects between the USA and China. He had also been ‘actively involved in initiation and planning of several large-scale international high-tech exhibitions in major cities in China. The areas of expertise include biotechnology, pharmaceutics, material science and precision machinery.

On the research side, Dr Wong has published and delivered more than 65 papers in international academic journals and at international conferences. His current research projects are supported by several major competitive grants awarded by the Research Grant Council and the Croucher Foundation.

Before joining HKUST as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Biology and the Research Centre in 1990, Dr Wong was Section Head and Principal Lecturer in the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology of Hong Kong Polytechnic.

Dr Wong received his PhD at McGill University, Canada. His main research interests are environmental biochemistry, plant biochemistry and physiology.
