XCELLENCEProf Ka Ming Ng, Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has won the prestigious Excellence in Process Development Research Award of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).
The award recognizes individuals who have made significant technical contributions to advances in industrial process development. Prof Ng is cited for his multi-scale objective-oriented approach for product design and the development of the relevant manufacture process in reduced time, effort and investment, while maintaining the highest product quality.
AIChE, founded in 1908, is a professional association of more than 50,000 members. It provides leadership in advancing the chemical engineering profession by fostering and disseminating knowledge, supporting the professional and personal growth of its members, and applying members’ expertise to address societal needs.
Prof Ng joined HKUST last year after a successful career at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he was Professor of Chemical Engineering from 1980 to 2000. He was also Visiting Research Engineer at DuPont Central R&D from 1995-96 and Visiting Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1989. Currently, he serves as the Corporate Science and Technology Advisor to Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, Japan.
“It is a great honor to receive the Excellence in Process Development Research Award of AIChE, which reflects the high standards of chemical engineering research at HKUST. Through research and development work that is academically significant and relevant to Hong Kong, our aim is to help enhance the industrial competitiveness of the territory, particularly in the design and manufacture of high-value-added products,” he said.
Prof Ng will receive his award and deliver an address at the Process Development Division Dinner at the AIChE Annual Meeting in Indianapolis in November this year.
HKUST is the only university in Hong Kong with a department of chemical engineering, which offers undergraduate programs in chemical, environmental, and polymer engineering. The department’s postgraduate programs cover frontier topics like advanced materials, environment science and engineering, and biotechnology.
