World Authority on Heat Transfer Professor Ping Cheng Joins HKUST

Professor Ping Cheng, a world renowned expert in heat transfer and energy conversion, joins the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology to lead the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He will assume his new post as Department Head on 1 January 1995.

Originally from Hong Kong, Professor Cheng said, “I was attracted to HKUST because I -- _ wanted to return home and do something meaningful for my own people. I feel that HKUST is the

right place for me to achieve my goal.”

“I will continue the very successful efforts the Department has made in recruiting talented faculty and in establishing modem laboratories,” he says of his new appointment. “I will also try to lead the Department in striving for higher academic excellence in terms of both teaching and research.”

As a researcher at National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the United States during 1966- 1968, Professor Cheng pioneered the study of radiative heat transfer with applications to the re-entry of spaceship to the atmosphere. Later, as Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hawaii, he spearheaded research in the development of Geothermal Energy in Hawaii.

Prior to joining HKUST, Professor Cheng was Professor and Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he has taught for 24 years. Other academic appointments included a visiting professorship of Petroleum Engineering at the Stanford University and a guest professorship of Thermodynamics at the Technical University of Munich, West Germany. Professor Cheng earned his BS from Oklahoma State University, MS from MIT, both in Mechanical Engineering, and his PhD in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University.

A world authority on radiative heat transfer and porous-media heat transfer, Professor Cheng is also interested in energy conversion. He has published more than 120 papers on these topics. He is a fellow of the American Society of Mecha&a.l Engineering, and an associate editor of American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics’s Journal of Thermophysics and Heat Transfer.
