HKUST Launches Unique

Degrees in Chemical Engineering

A new generation of chemical engineers, crucial to the future development of local industries, will be trained by two new degree programs at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. In Hong Kong, the BEng in Chemical Engineering and Environmental Engineering and BEng in Chemical and Polymer Engineering are only available at HKUST. The programs will be offered by HKUST's Department of Chemical Engineering, the only department of its kind in Hong Kong.

"Graduates of these programs can be optimistic about their career prospects, especially as the programs are only available at HKUST," said Dr Gordon McKay, undergraduate programs coordinator in the University's Department of Chemical Engineering. "There are job opportunities in many areas, such as processing, manufacturing research and development, government, consulting and teaching." "The new programs have been carefully developed to train students for the increasing needs of the local electronics and semiconductors industries," said Dr Mckay. "Our students also take courses in business, industrial management and social sciences, introducing them to economics, accounting and marketing relevant to the industries of Hong Kong. I believe all of these skills will be invaluable in their future careers."

In Hong Kong, chemical and environmental engineering is an important component of many processing and manufacturing industries, such as plastics, microelectronics, and textiles.

Environmental control manages and minimizes waste. Environmental engineers design, develop, operate and optimize environmental processes and treatment plants, and conduct research into new developments to minimize waste production.

Chemical and polymer engineering is another significant component in processing and manufacturing industries, such as plastics, toys, microelectronics, textiles, and fiber optics. Chemical and polymer engineers design, operate and manage new processes which produce new petroleum products, agricultural chemicals, household products, pharmaceuticals, photographic materials, food, beverages, and many other everyday goods.
