LEGO, one of the world’s most popular toys, is changing. The LEGO Group has started making the plastic for its bricks from a renewable source. It’s using polyethylene made from sugarcane rather than the plastic it has used since the 1960s, which is made from oil.

Being made from plant-based plastic won’t affect the quality of the final product. LEGO’s high production standards will ensure that the new bricks have the same properties as conventional plastic. The only difference will be that the new bricks are more environmentally friendly. They’ll even be recyclable, though not biodegradable.

For now, the only LEGO made from polyethylene will be vegetation pieces. However, LEGO plans to make all its bricks, as well as packaging, from sustainable materials by 2030. As it makes 36 billion bricks a year, this will significantly reduce oil usage. What’s more, all the energy the company has used since 2017 comes from renewable sources, thanks to large investments in wind farms. In this way, it hopes to help make playtime as beneficial to the planet as it is to the kids.

49.What is the main point of this article?

(A) The LEGO Group will soon be selling different products. (B) All LEGO are now being made in a new way.

(C) The LEGO Group is trying to protect the environment. (D) All LEGO packaging is now reusable and recyclable. 50. What do we learn about the LEGO bricks?

(A) The recyclable material will first be used on botanical elements like trees, leaves, and bushes.

(B) The new bricks will be biodegradable as well as recyclable.

(C) The LEGO Group started to use the new bricks at the end of 2017. (D) There will be 36 billion recyclable bricks to start with.

Throughout history, people in different countries have had different beliefs and superstitions about animals.

Take bats for example. In China and Poland, bats symbolize long life and happiness. However, in other countries, bats are thought to be carriers or agents of evil spirits, the devil, ghosts, or witches.

You might think that everyone around the world dislikes bees or at least is afraid of them. In the past, however, bees were believed to be wise and even holy, and the buzzing of a bee was said to be a song of praise. If a bee landed on a person's hand, it was believed that the person would become rich. It was also believed that a bee stung only those who swore or told a lie.

Cats are popular pets nowadays. They were also popular in ancient Egypt, where they were considered to be holy. In other parts of the world, though, people thought that cats, especially black ones, were unlucky. A few people even believed that cats killed babies by sucking the breath out of them.

Dogs, on the other hand, have usually been well liked throughout history and in different countries. However, some people believe that the howling of a dog means that someone is going to die or become sick. Others have said that dogs can see ghosts and other creatures that humans cannot see.

Like dogs, wolves were also thought to have magical powers. At one time, people believed that a wolf's stare could cause a person to go blind, and that a wolf's breath could cook meat. Body parts of a wolf were often used in medicine. A wolf's liver, for example, was thought to relieve birth pains, and its right paw was used for throat infections. In addition, wolves that had been killed were often buried in front of villages or hung on village gates to keep other wolves away.

Although scientists have found that some of these beliefs about animals are wrong, many old ideas and superstitions about animals remain popular to this day.

(CNN) Every year, the world produces 300 million tons of plastic -- eight million tons of which goes into our oceans.

More than 40% of our plastic trash falls under the single-use plastic umbrella -- that is, plastic designed to be used just once. Sometimes this plastic is used for minutes before being discarded, but it stays in our environment for hundreds of years.

As single-use plastics decompose, they release toxic chemicals that damage our natural habitat and harm marine animals. Of all the plastic created, only 9% of it has been recycled. And by 2050, the UN predicts that there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans.

On June 8 this year, CNN is asking students around the world to celebrate World Oceans Day with a Zero Plastic Lunch -- a lunch with no single-use plastic components.

Here's how it works. Zero Plastic Lunch

We're asking students to evaluate the number of single-use plastics -- such as packaging, cutlery and straws -- that they use throughout the week.

Then, they should think about replacing these items with environmentally friendly alternatives. For example, swap a plastic straw -- which takes 450 years to decompose -- with a paper one, or simply don't use one at all.

Students can participate in the campaign by sharing a photo of their normal lunch and one of their Zero Plastic Lunch with CNN, by emailing ZeroPlasticLunch@cnn.com, or using the hashtag #ZeroPlasticLunch on social media.

CNN will feature the lunches of children around the world across the network on June 8.

The Last Straw

We're also combating plastic straws, which are used once then trashed --hardly any are recycled.

(5)

Convince your school to ban plastic straws, and share with CNN by emailing thelaststraw@cnn.com, or using the hashtag #thelaststraw.

Join CNN to beat the world's addiction to single-use plastic, one meal at a time.

55.Based on the press release, how many tons of plastic are recycled each year around the world?

(A)40% (B) 300 million (C) eight million (D) 27 million 56. What kind of action is the CNN press release encouraging students to do?

(A) Place plastic cups into proper recycling bin.

(B) Bring your own stainless-steel container to buy take-out food. (C) Quit smoking and start exercising regularly.

(D) Join a Beach Clean-Up Day to remove plastic wastes.

57. Which of the following set of infographics is likely to appear on the poster for this press release?

(A) (B)

(C)

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the smartest beast of all? Through groundbreaking scientific story of an animal with more than just gut instinct emerges. Clever athletes, super sleuths and born performers, they really seem to be on the ball. But what really goes on in the mind of man’s best friend? From the edge of canine science we discover the true of the dog.

We live with 400 million of them. Nosy, inquisitive busy bodies with busy minds. We share our homes with them and just about everything else. For centuries, we’ve been fascinated with them, striving to get into the mind of the dog. But we’re not the only ones doing the research. They watch us. They listen, picking up on our every move, gathering intelligence for the doggie database. Why? Because their lives depend on it, and have for millennia.

The wolf is the mother of all dogs. Some 14,000 years ago, a group of wolves took a new evolutionary path. No one knows exactly why, but most agree the split occurred because of us. As human hunter-gatherers settled down, they created rubbish. Some say the wolves that couldn’t pass up a free lunch began hanging around. For a select few, scavenging replaced hunting. And the wolf-like attributes they used for taking down prey faded away. These were the first dogs, eventually evolving into smaller animals with smaller teeth and smaller brains. But other traits loomed larger. They became more approachable than wolves and were willing to work.

Ultimately dogs and humans struck a food for hire deal. If the dogs worked hard, the people would throw them a bone. And the ones who paid attention and obeyed were rewarded plentifully, surviving to pass down their clever genes, creating a species uniquely focused on us. This co-evolution between human and dog plays out today, an ancient bond thriving in modern suburbs.

63. What is the main purpose of the passage?

(A) To introduce the evolution of the wolf from the dog.

(B) To emphasize the important role of dogs played in human’s lives. (C) To tell a story about the Smartest beast in the world.

(D) To explain why and how wolves were tamed and became dogs. 64. What does “they” in the third paragraph refer to?

(A) Human hunter-gatherers. (B) The “first” wolves.

(C) The “first” dogs.

(D) The wolf-like attributes.

65. In the passage, which of the following statements about dogs is true? (A) Hard-working dogs get more rewards than obeying ones.

(B) Dogs have been studying human behavior for years to survive. (C) Dogs have smaller brains than wolves, so they are not as smart as

wolves.

(D) Dogs have completely lost their ability to hunt since they grew into what they are today.

66. According to the reading, why did some wolves develop into dogs? (A) Dependence on humans. (B) Natural selection.

(C) Climate change. (D) Loss of habitat.

許多塑膠產品被送往回收廠,在那兒它們可以避免汙染環境。
