For over 100 years Haiti has been plagued with governmental corruption and mismanagement, making it one of the poorest nations on earth. When a powerful earthquake hit in 2010, many buildings collapsed due to poor construction, causing the deaths of 100,000 people. Ironically, a much stronger earthquake hit Chile later that year, but caused less damage due to Chile's higher building standards. After the earthquake in Haiti, many residents were relocated to emergency, overcrowded tent cities, which caused another catastrophe—the spread of cholera and tuberculosis.

GHESKIO, a medical mission founded in Haiti in 1982 to eradicate HIV/AIDS quickly switched its mission to fighting cholera and tuberculosis. The first step was providing chlorinated water to the residents, since most residents were getting cholera from the polluted water they were drinking. Next, the GHESKIO team surveyed the residents to identify those with tuberculosis, and then isolate these patients from their neighbors, since tuberculosis is an airborne disease spread by sneezing and coughing.

GHESKIO then set out to vaccinate all of the children against cholera, since they are the most vulnerable to the disease. GHESKIO also organized neighborhood groups to clear out waterways and trash lots to reduce mosquito counts and prevent malaria.

46.What was GHESKIO's original mission in Haiti?

 Preventing the transmission of tuberculosis.  Lower the incidence of malaria cases.  Vaccinating children against cholera.  Combatting the spread of HIV/AIDS. 47.According to the reading, why has Haiti suffered with poverty for more than a century?

 There has been a string of natural disasters.  Natural resources have been squandered.  Unethical and incompetent leadership.  Haiti lacks technology and industry. 48.Why did medical volunteers want residents to clean up waterways?

 To prevent the spread of tuberculosis.  To minimize the possibility of malaria.  To provide a source of drinking water.  To eradicate the cholera epidemic. 49.Why were there fewer fatalities and less damage after the earthquake in Chile?

 Chile had stricter construction regulations.  Chile did not have cholera and tuberculosis.  The earthquake in Chile was less severe.  The government in Chile was better prepared. 50.How is cholera spread in crowded conditions?

 People cough and sneeze on each other.  Unsanitary needles spread the bacteria.  It is transmitted when mosquitoes bite people.  The residents consume unsanitary water.
