Few would disagree that sipping hot tea in the late afternoon is one of life’s great pleasures. 41 You certainly have heard of this delightful British custom. Some believe that the English duchess Anna Russell started this pleasant pastime in the mid-1800s. At the time, members of upper class tended to have a light lunch and late dinner. However, she found it difficult to tolerate the hunger. 42 She later started inviting friends over for the affair. 43 Hosts at these engagements served high-quality teas and snacks on low tables. This explains why it is called “low tea,” which is clearly characteristic of British high culture.

High tea, by comparison, functioned as one of the main meals during the day for the working class in northern England. In the 17th and early 18th centuries, people mostly worked

in agriculture and ate their biggest meal at lunchtime. This was followed by a light supper in the evening. 44 Hence, eating a big lunch became not so convenient. When they got off work, they were starving. One would therefore often see workers having high tea immediately after work, usually between 5 and 7 p.m. 45 Strong black tea was served in ordinary teapots, and diners were seated on high-backed chairs at the dining table, which inspired the term “high tea.”

About 3 years ago, I came up with a goal that would shape my life in ways I never thought possible: I decided that I was going to run a Marathon. At first, the task seemed extremely daunting, and then completely impossible. However, my life changed in ways that I never imagined.

I still remembered back to my old ways of thinking about running: Running by itself isn’t fun, but when you’re playing a sport, that makes it fun. While my views have changed since these days, I nevertheless decided to take up a sport or two to help augment my training. I saw it as a way to not only gain more endurance, speed, coordination, and strength but also have some fun and connect with friends.

Furthermore, I quickly realized that drinking and running really don’t mix. It’s kind of hard to wake up for an early Sunday morning distance run when you’re hungover from the night before. In addition, after doing some research, I found that drinking alcohol reduced your body's ability to recover from an intense run and your body's ability to build muscle. So it became less appealing and I slowly phased drinking out of my way of life. Unfortunately, making running a part of my life had its drawbacks. I fell out of touch with certain friends. My drinking buddies, for instance, started to miss me when I wasn’t able to make it out to the bar because I had a training run or a race the next morning.

The more I ran, the more I talked about it with my friends and the more my friends associated me with it. It wasn’t long before I was known in some circles as a runner. Along with this, I’ve been able to inspire others to start making healthy decisions for themselves

The great Greek goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite, was a jealous goddess. When her son Cupid found a human, Psyche, to love—one whose beauty rivaled hers—Aphrodite did all in her power to thwart the marriage. She sent a plague and let it be known that the only way the land could get back to normal was to sacrifice Psyche. The king, who was Psyche's father, tied Psyche up and left her to her death at the hands of some presumed fearsome monster. It was Aphrodite's son Cupid who released and married the princess. Unfortunately for the young couple, Cupid and Psyche, Aphrodite was not the only one trying to foul things up. Psyche had two sisters who were as jealous as Aphrodite. They urged Psyche to pry into the area of his life that Psyche's husband kept hidden from her. Cupid was a god, and, as beautiful as he was, he did not want his mortal wife to see his form. Psyche's sister preyed on her insecurities and persuaded Psyche that her husband was a hideous monster. Psyche decided to satisfy the girls' curiosity, and so one night, she used a candle to look at her sleeping husband. Cupid's divine form was exquisite, and Psyche stood there transfixed, staring at her husband with her candle melting. A bit of wax dripped on her husband. Her abruptly awakened, irate, disobeyed, injured husband-god flew away.

Psyche couldn't go along with the separation. She implored her mother-in-law to give her another chance. Aphrodite agreed, but there were conditions. She devised four tasks, each task more exacting than the last. Psyche passed the first three challenges, but the last

task was too much for her. It was to bring back the underworld beauty cream. The temptation was too great to make herself more beautiful—to use the cream she procured. Thus, Psyche retrieved the box successfully, but then she opened it and fell into a deathlike sleep, as Aphrodite had secretly predicted.

There are 3 ways to improve your in-flight meal experience. First, lower your expectations. I know this sounds harsh, but I’m quite serious here. If you come on board expecting restaurant-quality meals, the reality is that you’re going to be disappointed. That’s not something we’re physically capable of offering. We’re reheating meals that were prepared on the ground. Thus, their quality isn’t on a par with what you expect. We’ll still do our best to make the presentation palatable. Board the airplane with lower expectations however, and we might be able to pleasantly surprise you. Second, try new things. When you turn your nose up at one of the limited items we have available, that further decreases your options and sets you up for disappointment. Why not take the opportunity to try something new? I know, the quality won’t be the best, but just think — if you like it on a plane, imagine how much better it will be when you have it on the ground! Also, keep in mind; you might find that something you’ve tried before and found to be distasteful on the ground is rather yummy up in the air, so give it a try! Lastly, be realistic. We will of course do whatever we can to make your in-flight culinary experience the best possible. Yet, remember that we are working with limited resources. If I offer you chicken or beef, and you say, “but I’d really just like fish, or maybe some pasta,” then you’re putting me in an awkward position. However, so

many passengers expect all the variety of a fully stocked convenience store. I only have so many things on board. I can’t manufacture things out of thin air. If you have specific dietary needs or particular taste, bring your own food.

( ) 54. Who the addresser and the addressees might be? (A) A captain is announcing something to the passengers.

(B) The passengers are complaining to the staff about the in-flight meal. (C) The ground crew are recommending diners some savory meals. (D) A flight attendant is providing some suggestions to the passengers. ( ) 55. What situation is not given a reason to further illustrate?

(A) Why are you going to be down if you have higher expectations on the meal? (B) Why can’t the speaker satisfy each of your requests?

(C) Why do your taste buds change drastically at altitude?

(D) Why is the quality of the food in the air lower than that on the ground? ( ) 56. What method is not mentioned in the article?

(A) Look forward to cuisine on the plane. (B) Board with the meal prepared in advance. (C) Face the music and be practical.

(D) Be open to new choices on the menu. IV.

Read on below to ensure you are fully equipped when enjoying Afternoon Tea at one of our many venues, but remember it is usually a matter of personal taste and preference. First, most venues have a relaxed 'smart casual' dress code these days, so there is no need for men to wear a jacket and tie unless otherwise specified - trousers or smart jeans, collared shirt and clean, un-scuffed shoes are acceptable. No sportswear or trainers (sneakers). For the ladies it's the perfect excuse to get dressed up! Second, you must remember to stir correctly! Place your spoon in a 6 o'clock position in the cup and fold the tea towards the 12 o'clock position whilst making sure not to 'clink' the spoon against the sides of the cup. You must also remember not to leave the spoon in the cup, instead placing it on the saucer to the side of the cup. As for the brewing time, it depends on your own taste and the type of tea. Yet, the longer you brew the tea the higher the level of antioxidants called flavonoids, which research has shown to have many health benefits. We would recommend three to six minutes of brewing time, no longer, so as to avoid damaging the flavour of the tea.

What’s more, there are hundreds of different varieties of tea and each particular tea suits certain tastes, accompaniments and brewing times, however we would always stress the use of loose leaf tea when crafting your perfect Afternoon Tea, so as to obtain the finest experience possible. Tea bags and the popular brands of tea certainly have their place, but the use of a speciality loose leaf tea not only enhances the flavour, as well as the overall experience of taking Afternoon Tea. There is a common misconception. That is, outstretching one's little finger aids the balance of the cup when taking a sip of tea; this is almost certainly not the case and is not only pointless, but slightly silly. We wouldn't recommend grasping the cup in the palm of your hand, but there is no need to stick a pinkie out. It has rapidly become

one of Afternoon Teas most common faux pas.

Despite all of the quaint practices associated with the experience, the important thing to remember is that Afternoon Tea is meant to be fun, and you can't let the etiquette get too much in the way of your own personal enjoyment.

( ) 57. What opinion of the afternoon tea does the author hold? (A) There is lots of etiquette that people need to obey while enjoy it.

(B) The experience might vary from person to person. Yet, it’s still a pleasure for people.

(C) Most people have proper conception and manners of it.

(D) He strongly recommends using tea bags to enhance the flavor.

Based on the above article, list at least two principles of etiquette of taking Afternoon Tea: 58. (1) (2 分 ) 59. (2) (2 分 )
