HKUST HOLDS SEVENTH CONGREGATION
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology will present a total of 2,460 academic degrees to 1,862 undergraduate and 598 postgraduate students during its Seventh Congregation between 10 and 12 November (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday).
Vice-Chairman of the HKUST Council, Dr Steven Poon, will officiate on Wednesday, while Chairman of the Council, Dr Vincent Lo, will preside over the Congregation on Thursday. The Pro-Chancellor, Dr S. Y. Chung, will officiate on Friday.
The University will confer honorary doctorates on three distinguished academics and a business leader. Prof Arthur Li Kwok-cheung, Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, will receive an honorary Doctor of Letters. Prof Lawrence J. Lau, Director, Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, Stanford University will receive an honorary Doctor of Social Sciences degree. Prof Shang Fa Yang, Vice-President of the Academia Sinica, Taipei, will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree. Mr William Fung Kwok Lun, Group Managing Director of Li & Fung Ltd., will receive an honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree.
The University will also recognize teaching excellence and outstanding performance by students. Dr Che-Ting Chan, an associate professor in the Department of Physics, will receive the Michael G. Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching. Mr Vincent Cheng Yuen Shan, the Chairperson of the HKUST Students' Union Council for 1998-1999, will be awarded the Stephen Cheong Kam-chuen Medal for Distinguished Service to the Student Body.
Academic Achievement Medals will be presented to 23 outstanding graduates who each maintained a straight A grade average throughout their undergraduate years.
