It hit him that the limited hours for drop-in services at day shelters meant people had to schedule their days around visits to the shelter, 47 it hard to hold a stable job or see family regularly. This vending machine, 48 after his charity-Action Hunger, gives away necessities like food, toothpaste, and socks for free 24 hours per day. At first, Khaled speculatively

approached over 50 manufacturers across England and Europe — most 49 his proposal, a few politely declined. However, just before he was about to give up and try to raise funds to buy a machine 50 , N&W Global Vending responded to his letter and invited him to pitch the idea to them. That was how the plan could be successfully implemented. With the help of the machine, people in need can use special cards to get three items per day. The idea is that users do not become 51 on the machines, and are working toward a long-term plan for getting off the streets, Khaled explained. He wants Action Hunger’s low-cost vending machines, which are restocked daily by volunteers, to complement other existing services. He believes continued engagement with local support services is key to 52 a halt to the cycle of homelessness.

Khaled hopes to expand quickly across the country, as well as across Europe and the United States. Over the next month, Khaled and his team will monitor 53 products in the machine are in highest demand. In the longer term, they want to crunch data from the keycards to figure out 54 giving someone access to free basic necessities contributes to helping them get off the street.

After 244 years of continuous publication, the famous Encyclopedia Britannica has finally decided to stop printing. The immense set of reference books fill 32 large volumes and is considered the most learned encyclopedia in the English language. The company had admitted that competition from online encyclopedias, such as Wikipedia, has meant printing the books is no longer feasible. The 2010 set will be the final Britannica issued in printed form.

Encyclopedia Britannica published its first print edition in 1768 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Over the years, the company’s famous gold lettered encyclopedia sets became mainstays in libraries and homes throughout the United States and Britain. Many of the encyclopedias sets peaked in 1990 when the company sold 12,000 sets in the United States alone. In contrast, only 8,000 sets of the 2010 edition have been sold, with 4,000 sets still available to customers while supplies last.

However, Britannica President Jorge Cauz doesn’t see this as a defeat. Sales of the book represent less than 1% of their total sales. Encyclopedia Britannica will still publish an online edition with a $69.95 annual subscription fee, but the company expects that the biggest profits will continue to come from educational products for large institutions, such as online learning tools, software and DVDs. Although many observers have expressed nostalgia for the printed encyclopedias, the company maintains that its focus on digital products will provide readers with a reliable source of accurate and well-researched reference information.

62. Sales of Encyclopedia Britannica have declined for years because ________.

(A) its subscription fee was too expensive for overall readers (B) most consumers couldn’t afford the monthly installment (C) school libraries turn to other sources of information reference (D) people started to use free Internet resources for their needs

(A) It will force the company to offer free access to Encyclopedia Britannica online. (B) The company will make efforts to provide better services for educational institutions. (C) The company will probably have to declare bankruptcy soon.

(D) The move will temporarily help the company increase its market share. 64. Which of the following has the closest meaning to the word nostalgia?

(A) preference (B) perseverance (C) opposition (D) obligation [C]

December 21 is often the day of the year on which the Northern Hemisphere is exposed to the sun’s ultra-violet rays for the shortest length of time. Known as the winter solstice, many regard this shortest day on the calendar as the first day of winter. Since it’s immediately followed by the longest night of the year, it is, moreover, the ideal time to pull out the telescope and admire the stars in the sky.

The winter solstice is also the day that the star closest to us, making its way across the heavens in a broad solar arch, reaches the most southern point in the northern sky. This might explain the Latin origin for the word solstice-a combination of the noun for ‘sun’ (sol) and the verb ‘to stand still’ (sister)-which implies that the sun cannot sink any lower and that it eventually comes to a halt. It is no wonder that this significant annual event has been celebrated for centuries in many different cultures. In ancient Rome, for example, the occasion was marked by the annual Feast of Saturn. Held in honor of the god of agriculture, the week-long festival was a time when the present state of affairs too would stand still. Schools, courts, and businesses would close and slaves would even be served by their masters for a change! Arguments and thoughts of revenge would be forgotten and enemies would exchange gifts of fruit, dolls and candles. Entire wars were even suspended and soldiers were encouraged to lay down their arms and show mercy.

The next time you’re drowning yours in a steamy bowl of red bean soup with sticky rice balls, remember to stand still and appreciate the natural laws and human history behind this short but special day.

65. Why is the winter solstice the day on which the northern half of the earth is exposed to the sun for the least amount of time?

(A) It’s the day of the year that has the shortest night.

(B) It’s the day of the year when only half the sun’s rays reach Earth. (C) It’s the day of the year with the least hours of daylight.

(D) It’s the 24-hour period that marks the start of the northern winter. 66. What does the word “star” refer to in the second paragraph?

(A) The Northern Star. (B) The Southern Star.

(C) Saturn. (D) The sun.

67. Which of the following statements is TRUE about life in ancient Rome during the festival of Saturn?

(A) Slaves took revenge on masters who used to mistreat them. (B) Children were requested to attend school as usual.

(C) Peace would reign over the empire for a week.

(D) Many Romans chose to harvest the crops on this special day.
