HKUST and Chinese Academy of Sciences Set Up Joint
Research Lab in Nanostructure Materials and Technology
A new joint laboratory in nanostructure materials and technology will be formally inaugurated by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Hong Kong on Friday, 14 November. The Vice-President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof Bai Chunli, and the Dean of Science of HKUST, Prof Leroy L Chang, will sign the agreement to establish the new laboratory, which will be based on the HKUST campus.
"Advanced materials is one of the most important areas in modern science and technology and at the forefront are materials and
structures with dimensions on the scale of nanometers," Prof Chang said. " The new joint laboratory will promote exchange and
interaction, leading to academic and economic benefits. "The Chinese Academy of Sciences and HKUST will use their expertise and experience of cooperation to collaborate on research activities in this frontier area."
Initial research will focus on four areas: nano-scale hybrid materials, surfaces and interfaces, composite systems and semiconductor low dimensional structures.
The institutions forming the joint laboratory include, on the Academy side, the Institute of Applied Chemistry in Changchun and the
Institute of Chemistry, the Institute of Physics and the Institute of Semiconductors in Beijing, and from HKUST, the Departments of Chemistry and Physics. Also associated with the laboratory are the Advanced Materials Research Institute and the Materials
Characterization and Preparation Facility at HKUST.
Following the signing ceremony, Prof Bai will lecture on "Structural Studies of Material Surfaces Using Scanning Probe Microscopy"
