Fourth Congregation at HKUST

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology will confer academic degrees on 1362 undergraduate and 304 postgraduate students at its Fourth Congregation on 21 and 22 November 1996 (Thursday and Friday) at the HKUST campus.

Sir Sze-yuen Chung, Chairman of the Council, will officiate on Thursday, and the Rt Hon

Christopher Patten, Chancellor of the University and Governor, will preside over the Congregation on Friday.

This year, HKUST confers honorary doctorates on four distinguished scholars and local business and community leaders. Prof Xie Xide, world- renowned physicist and former president of Fudan University, becomes the first woman to receive an honorary degree from the University. She will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree. Mr Vincent H.S. Lo, Chairman and Chief Executive of the Shui On Group, will receive an honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree, as will Prof Donald P. Jacobs, Dean of the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. Dr Cheng Hon-kwan will receive an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree for his many contributions to the development of education in Hong Kong.

The University will also recognize teaching excellence and outstanding performance by students. Dr Mark Davidson of the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering will receive the Michael G. Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching. Mr Lo Tat-chi, former President of the HKUST Students' Union, will be awarded the Stephen Cheong Kam-chuen Medal for Distinguished Service to the Student Body.

Academic Achievement Medals will also be awarded to 15 outstanding graduates who maintained a straight A grade average throughout their undergraduate years.
