一、中文摘要 本 計 畫 探 討 先 秦 諸 子 著 名 的 名 實 之 辯，以期建構中國符號學思想的早期歷史。 語言可有多種不同的使用方式及用途，當人 們察覺到語言運用上面的差異和衝突時，便 可產生泛符號概念的思辯。此思辯往往透過 言說之論戰戲劇性地展開，先秦的名實之辯 正是不同語言運用方式之間的傾軋。這場邏 輯與修辭的論辯，頗類似西方中古時期三語 文學門的衝突。吾人可從語用學的角度來檢 視這場名實之辯，參與的先秦諸子立論根據 並不一致，不但各執己見，甚至各說各話。 而更為複雜的是，其論述展開方式往往又與 其抨擊對方論點的立場自相矛盾。由此觀 之，先秦諸子的論戰正蘊含了當代符號學的 關切議題。 關鍵詞：符號學、修辭、邏輯、論辯、語用 學、歷史 Abstr act

This project explores the great controversy over language pragmatics in the Pre-Qin era, with the aim of constructing the early history of Chinese semiotics. Semiotic thinking in general can be born when people become aware of the discrepancy and tension among different uses of language. This awareness and its expression are often enacted dramatically in the controversy of discourse. The discursive polemics in Pre-Qin China centers around the contention of

logic and rhetoric, quite similar to the fortune of the trivium in the medieval West. Traditionally known as the Great Debate on Name and Substance, the controversy should be understood as a phenomenon of language pragmatics. Those who participate in the Debate fail to communicate with one another because there is a discrepancy between encoding and decoding. Their polemics helps to create a textual space that includes the hidden agenda of semiotics.

二、緣由與目的 本專題研究係三年期計畫，前兩年考察 西方中世紀三語文學門的複雜關係，為西方 符號學溯源（研究成果參閱本人 86 及 87 年度的國科會專題研究計畫成果報告：NSC 86-2411-H-002-019, NSC 87-2411-H-002-034），本年度之研究則轉向中國先秦諸子 的符號思想，企圖比較東西方對符號體系的 思考，並探討中國泛符號概念的建立。 概言之，本計畫係符號學史研究，接踵 Umberto Eco 於 1983 年提出之世界符號學 史芻議而來。計畫的最終目的是為中國符號 思想探源，焦點凝聚在公元前四、三世紀諸 子的名實論辯。參照西方中世紀三語文學科 （文法、邏輯、修辭）之間的傾軋關係以為 他山之石，考察名家公孫龍、墨家、及莊子 之間的論辯，其實亦正是邏輯與修辭的論 辯。公孫龍、墨辯固然以辭害義，莊子何獨

2 不然？ 三、結果與討論 先秦的名實之辯早已成為中國哲學史 上的老生常談，然而如果從西方邏輯－語義 學（參見 Chmielewski 1962；Cheng 1965, 1987；Rieman 1980；Hansen 1983）或符號 學角度探析，則另有一番氣象。本人嘗申論 西方中世紀三語文學門與近代符號學的關 係（Han-liang Chang 1996, 1998b；另參見 Deely 1985；Perreiah 1989；Liszka 1996）， 而中國先秦的名實之辯實為邏輯、修辭之 爭，亦是中國符號思考之萌芽點。 根據 Paul de Man (1979)，當人們察覺 到語言運用上面的差異和衝突時，便可產生 泛符號概念的思辯。而 Marcelo Dascal (1990, 1996)則指出，此種思辯往往透過言說之論 戰戲劇性地展開。名實之辯正是一場言說論 戰，參與之諸子包括孟子、荀子、莊子、公 孫龍、及墨家。在這場大論辯中，雖然公孫 龍的詭辯修辭廣受批駁，但相當反諷的是， 駁斥公孫龍的諸子（尤其是莊子）亦大量運 用修辭，而邏輯論證在中國則趨於沈寂。 先秦的名實之辯並非始自公孫龍，但 是他的文本卻可以幫助我們釐清其中牽涉 到的語言議題。而莊子在名實之辯中雖然站 在反對名家的立場，批評公孫龍忽視語言的 指涉功能，然而另一方面，莊子的文本卻又 極盡修辭之能事，大量運用「重言」、「卮 言」、「寓言」，削弱了語言的指涉功能， 也使得溝通變得困難重重。本人以符號學的 角度重讀公孫龍及莊子，以期闡發兩者之哲 思。 公孫龍的「白馬論」從定義、命題、 至推論的推演是藉由對符號特性的考察成 立的。要言之，他是在論證「白馬」和「馬」 在符號（名）層次的不相等。同樣的，以皮 爾斯（C. S. Peirce）的符號學觀之，公孫龍 的「堅白論」，係在探討「質符」（qualisign）、 「實物符」（sinsign）、「法則符」（legisign） 之間的關係。至於「指物論」，則描述了符 號跟指涉物 的關係 ，更 探討 了 指標 符 號 （index）的特性。 公孫龍對名實關係的辯析遭到莊子的 批駁。對莊子而言，「以指喻指之非指不若 以非指喻指之非指也，以馬喻馬之非馬不若 以非馬喻馬之非馬也，天地一指也，萬物一 馬也」。簡言之，莊子認為語言的主要功能 在於指涉外物；他標榜「無言」，貶抑符號 的特性，因為語言符號並不能表述「道」。 然而本人要強調，莊子的哲學並沒有超越語 言，事實上，莊子正是藉由語言的使用（例 如語言縱軸的替換，甚至語言的非指涉功 能）呈現他的哲學，而其言說更是在「主客 問答」、「誇飾寓言」的文類中展開的。由 此可知，語言跟超越語言的神秘體驗在莊子 文本中並不互斥，相反的，兩者存在著相互 依恃的關係。莊子雖然批評名家「言隱於榮 華」，然而莊子使用的語言不也正是「謬悠 之說，荒唐之言，無端崖之辭」嗎？ 四、計畫成果自評 本計畫係跨東西方之符號思想史比較 研究，前兩年研究重點在於針對西方符號學 的演化過程作一理論上的推演，本人探討西 方符號學和中世紀三語文學門關係之兩篇 論文均已被知名學術出版機構採納發表，分 別 是 ： “ Semiotics and Liberal Arts Education”（該文收入下列專書中： Hendix, Harald, Joost Kloek, Sophie Levie, and Will van Peer, eds. The Search for a New Alphabet: Literary Studies in a Changing World. Amsterdam and Philadelphia: John

Benjamins, 1996. 49-52.）以及“The Rise of Semiotics and the Liberal Arts: Reading Martianus Capella's The Marriage of Philology and Mercury ” （ 發 表 於 Mnemosyne: A Journal of Classical Studies

51.5 [1998]: 538-53）。第三年的成果分為兩 部份：第一部份係對中國符號學的探討，第 二部份則係對西方符號學史相關議題之持 續研究。 第一部份的具體成就見於本人為英文 期刊《淡江評論》（Tamkang Review）客座 主編的中國符號學專號（28 卷 3 期）。本 人為該專號執筆論文一篇（“Controversy over Language: Towards Pre-Qin Semiotics”），該篇論文經國科會評選榮獲

傑出獎之獎勵。專號其他論文則由本人指導 博士班學生撰寫，從不同文本出發，探索中 國符號思想議題。參與本計畫領取國科會博 士班研究生獎助金的張志維同學亦有一篇 論文發表（Chih-wei Chang 1998）。 第二部份的成果係對西方符號學史的 持 續 研 究 ， 由 本 人 寫 成 論 文 一 篇 （“Controvert the Dead: Sextus Empiricus and Plutarch against the Stoics”）。本人並 獲以色列特拉維夫大學文學院長 Professor Marcelo Dascal 函邀，赴特拉維夫大學參加 國際語言實用學會會議，於「哲學爭議的溝 通原則」研討會上發表論文。 本 人 的 兩 篇 論 文 皆 從 語 用 學 角 度 出 發，分別剖析東西方古籍中的哲學爭議，對 中西符號思想之比較研究當有所貢獻。 五、參考文獻

出席國際會議報告

本人於民國八十七年十二月六日收到以色列特拉維夫大學哲學教授暨文學 院長達斯卡 Marcelo Dascal 函邀出席其召開之國際語言實用學會議，並在其主持 之「哲學爭論國際研究群」發表論文。按達氏為知名哲學家，著作豐碩，並主編 多種重要學術期刊。本人接獲邀請後，便進行論文撰寫工作，並向國科會報備動 支計畫案中之出席國際會議補助項目。 本人於八十八年六月十一日自台北啟程，搭乘華航班機經羅馬於翌日抵達特 拉維夫。按國際語用學會（International Association of Pragmatics）為一龐大學術 團體，會員人數眾多。今年輪值以色列特拉維夫大學召開。會議中有六場研討會 與「哲學爭論」課題有關，泰半係與 International Association of the Studies of Controversies 合作。本人應邀於六月十四日下午發表論文"Controvert the Dead: Sextus Empiricus and Plutarch against the Stoics" （附件二），探討哲學史上後人 與前人的論爭現象。本論文經達斯卡教授口頭邀約，將收錄在其主編之專書內。

「哲學論爭」為一重要思想史課題，晚近有與語言學合流趨勢。荷蘭之 John Benjamin 出版社即將推出一期刊Journal of Historical Pragmatics，為哲學史研究

To write about ancient esoteric texts at PRAGMA99 near the end of the second millenium seems out of joint and needs justification. However, there is a mysterious link between the texts I shall be dealing with and the present occasion. In circa 200 A.D. of the Christian era (House, 1980), one of the acknowledged precursors of semiotics, Sextus Empiricus, used the word πραγµα (pragma) for the signified (σηµαινοµενον) of linguistic sign (Adversus Mathematicos, 8.12, or in Loeb, Against

the Logicians, 2.12). According to the sceptic, or his account of the Stoics, a sign

consists of two parts: the σηµαινον, and the σηµαινοµενον--an opposition not unlike that proposed by Saussure in the 1910s. As with Saussure‘s distinction of

signifiant and signifié, the σηµαινον is the phonic part of speech, and the σηµαινοµενον is what is indicated by the signifier, namely, pragma. Although pragma is “the actual thing,” it exists only as a sign function and should not be
