School of Business and Management Homecoming Dinner

at the S H Ho Sports Hall

1

The weekend of 6 and 7 October saw the largest group of alumni ever return to the HKUST campus, for the 10th Anniversary Alumni Homecoming Dinners.

Close to 1400 alumni, deans and faculty, staff, family and friends from the Schools of Science, Engineering, Business and Management, and Humanities and Social Science, together with President Paul Ching-Wu Chu and President Emeritus Prof Chia-Wei Woo, celebrated the joyous gatherings amidst laughter, games, dancing and conviviality, and even a special sing-along of the alumni song Fei Xiang (Soaring) led by the composer and lyricists. Organized by the four Schools, the dinners served to further strengthen ties between the University and alumni, adding yet another chapter to our graduates’ fond memories of HKUST.

Business School Alumna : “It made me realize just how much my life has been enriched since becoming part of HKUST.”

More than 600 people enjoyed an evening filled with warm conversation and laughter to celebrate HKUST’s 10th anniversary. Over 100 MBA alumni attended this homecoming dinner. I was amongst one of them.

That evening, I met so many familiar faces. Some of them were old friends whom I got to know from the first day I was an MBA student. Others were acquaintances made after graduation through the network of the MBA Alumni Association. Seeing them all in one occasion made me realize just how much my life has been enriched since becoming part of HKUST. Apart from a c q u i r i n g a f o r m a l b u s i n e s s education, I learnt a great deal from

t h e p e o p l e o f t h i s f r i e n d l y a l u m n i community; playing golf with them, interacting with them in personal and career development, and even got business referrals.

I have a great sense of pride in being an HKUST MBA graduate. I am proud not just because of the MBA program’s rapid advancement in both global and regional rankings, but even more importantly, because my fellow alumni have both keen minds and warm hearts, and are generous in giving, sharing, suppor ting, and promoting each other’s interests for their mutual growth and for the benefit of the University.

The Homecoming Dinner was a truly memorable occasion. I just wonder what will happen ten years later when we celebrate the 20th anniversary. My crystal ball tells me that we would host it in a much bigger venue. This should come as no

The Advanced Manufacturing Institute (AMI) of the University has recently received a major international award — the University Leadership and Excellence in Application and Development Award — from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and its Computer and Automated Systems Association, in recognition of its achievements in research and education in the area o f e n t e r p r i s e - w i d e i n t e g r a t e d manufacturing technology.

The University’s second large-scale sculptural installation, and the first of its kind in Asia, was officially unveiled on 3 October. The One-World-Fountain, overlooking the sea from the LG7 lawn, is a symbolic water sculpture created by world-renowned water sculptor Prof Hans Muhr of Austria. The sculpture was commissioned and donated

World Harmony in Water and Stone

to the University by Dr Helmut Sohmen, University Court member and Chairman of the World-Wide Shipping Agency Ltd.

Five massive stones comprise the sculpture, with a large onyx marble quarried in China as the centerpiece. The stone represents the pivotal place Asia holds in the world, and each of the four other stones arranged around it are from a different continent. Water shoots upwards from each stone, and the arcs formed by the streams of water crisscross each other in different patterns, signifying the harmony between man and the world. The sculpture was given the Chinese name Tien Yi Chuan ( ) by members of the Humanities and Social Science faculty.
