China in Maps: HKUST Exhibit
Celebrates Hong Kong's Return to
China
Rare and historic maps of China will be exhibited at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 27 June to 15 October to commemorate the return of Hong Kong to China.
"China in Maps: 16th - 19th Century", featuring the HKUST Library's special collection of antique maps, will be on display in the
University Library Gallery.
Illustrating a steady growth of knowledge about China's geography, the exhibit presents important works of notable mapmakers,
beginning with the first Western atlas of China, by Ortelius, published in Antwerp in 1584.
The series of conflicts between European powers and China from the late 1830s to early 1860s, and the establishment of Hong Kong and other treaty ports during the 1840s, led to the development of detailed maps of China's coastline.
As with earlier maps, the artistic quality attained by 19th century cartographers is frequently outstanding, as is the historical value of their work.
