poll of teaching excellence.
Among this year
’
s top t凹, threefaculty members received their second award and Drs Andrew Chan (ACCT) and K. P. Ramaswamy (ACCT) were selected for the third time. The full roll of honor of the Top Ten Lecturers Poll 1999 (with pictures opposite, top to bottom, in same order) is:
Dr Chak Keung Chan (CENG) (1)
Dr Andrew H. T. Chan (ACCT) (3) Dr Derek Kwok-Wing Chan (ACCT) (1)
Prof Nelson Cue (PHYS) (1)
Dr Jimmy Fung (MATH) (2) Dr Mounir Hamdi (COMP) (1)
Dr Chung Kweon Kim (ACCT) (2) Dr K. P. Ramaswamy (ACCT) (3) Dr Mike K. P. So (ISMT) (2) Dr Mary W Wong (ACCT) (1)
(Numbers in parentheses indicate times selected)
Among this year's selection, there was an unprecedented fourth award for Dr Kin-Yin Li of Mathematics. However, Dr Li yet again declined his award in favor of other lecturers.
As well as expressing gratitude at bemg chosen, this year's winners also mentioned some of the factors-essentially good communication-which they believe contribute to their success as teachers.
Two-time winner Dr Jimmy Fung (MATH) said it was important to be up front with students.

and I persist in getting their commitment to strive for excellence in learning." The key to this, said Dr Fung,“is to illustrate concepts from real life so students can relate them to their own degree program."
Also a recipient for the second time, Dr Chung Kweon Kim (ACCT) said he had two goals: To convince his students he is one of the best instructors in the subject, and that he is very much concerned about their learning. To achieve this he makes extensive use of the Internet.
“
In particul缸, Istarted to use the web page for teaching in the Fall semester’”said Dr Kim, "and I keep several channels open for students to contact me, includingemail and phone.
”
Emphasizing communication ,日rst time winner Dr Derek Chan (ACCT) said, "I think good preparation and explanation, enthusiasm towards the subject matter, caring about and
advising students both in and out of class are important elements of high-quality teaching.
”
Successful communication does not come easy, however, said Dr Mounir Hamdi (COMP).“This comes;’he said, "by establishing mutual respect which creates a friendly and professional atmosphere during class. Such an environment is not given to lecturers but should be earned through good class preparation, student motivation, and caring.
”
In addition to good communication, Dr Chak Keung Chan (CENG) said,“The other issue is to give them freedom and time to think. While basic information is important, students will lose interest very soon and forget most of the information unless the course is challenging to their minds." Dr Chan added,“Most of the homework problems I set do not have a unique answer since they are usually to discuss a controversial issue or on design. The beauty of this is that they can appreciate what other people think on the same issue. It is vital to give students sufficient time to go through the thinking process, but I would trade in teaching a little less information for a well thought-out project in which the student needs to obtain, digest and analyze new information.
”
In addition to having a strong desire to teach and being accessible to students, first time winner after only six
months at UST Dr Mary Wong (ACCT) said that practical experience in business and industry has helped her communicate with her students.
“
I introduce practical and stimulating aspects of law to enhance their awareness, and cover important developmental issues to better prepare them for the complexities of the businessworld;' Dr Wong said.
First-time winner and new AVPAA Prof Nelson Cue summed things up neatly when he said,“The key to teaching success is to try to put yourself in the position of a student and ask how you would have liked the instructor help you learn the subject."

The first was the visit of the Financial Secretary, the
Hon Donald Tsang, JP. On arr甘訓, MrTsang was met by President Woo and professors Leroy Chang and Otto Lin who then entertained him to lunch with other leading
faculty members.
In the afternoon, the FS (above, center) toured the campus, visiting the Consumer Media Laboratory, the
Biotechnology Resear℃h Institute, the Nanostructure Materials Laboratory, the Human Language Technology Center, the Center for Coastal and Atmospheric Researc

various UST students'
unions.
Two weeks later, the University hosted the newly appointed Chairperson of
the University Grants Committee, Dr Alice Lam (below, right), and UGC Assistant Secretary-General (Development), Ms Petty Lai (below, left). The visitors met senior faculty members and
toured the UST's showcases, expressing particular interest in the UGC-funded projects carried out by various departments.
.
UGC-ASG Petty Lai was visiting her alma mater for the first time since graduation in her official capacity. Ms Lai said that she was glad to have the opportunity to see, and was impressed by, some of
the developments, achievements and results of the University, particularly in turning research results into business opportunities.
F;
Asked why she joined the
Government after getting a BBA and an MBA,恥1sLai said,
“
Having worked in the public sector before returning to studies at UST, I found thatmuch of the knowledgι
principles and theories learned
in business courses were equally applicable in the

The Pearl River Estuary Pollution Project (PREPP) has been nominated by the Hong Kong government as one of them可 oritems on the Chief Executive
’
sCommunity Projects List. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has awarded a HK$18 million grant to UST's Center for Coastal and Atmospheric Research (CCAR) and the Institute for Environment and Sustainable Development (IESD) for the project.
The objectives of the three-year project are to develop a real time database of the status of specific pollutants, sediments, pesticides, heavy metals, harmful algal blooms and '
nutrient levels in the Pearl River Estuary. Innovative technologies, including physiological biomarkers, satellite remote sensing and marine environmental
mapping systems will be employed to obtain data on these pollutants. The data will serve as important references for authorities in Hong Kong and on the mainland in devising pollution monitoring and control strategies vital for the improvement of
water quality, and ecological and human health.
Prof Gary Heinke,
Director of IESD and PRE PP 這 co-directorwith Prof Jay-Chung Chen (CCAR Director) said,
“
This is now a project of vital importance, and it is equally important 出atlocal institutions and mainland agencies work closely together to foster mutual trust and respect for a better scientific understanding of environmental conditions in the Pearl River Estuary."Six other institutions
from Guangzhou,
Hangzhou, France and Hong Kong will participate in PREPP. They are: the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, the South China Sea Branch of the State Oceanic Administration in Guangzhou, Zhongshan University, the Second Institute of State Oceanic

million by the Industrial and Technology Development Council (ITDC) to fund four applied research projects. These projects center on liquid-crystal-display, electronics packaging, 'smart-card’,and multi-media CD-ROM technologies, all of them areas where advanced input could boost the competitiveness of Hong Kong's high-end industries.
Hong Kong has already developed a major LCD industrγ,
accounting for 20% of the world這 LCD production volume. However, in terms of revenue, Hong Kong has only a 3% share of the world's LCD market.
“
Development of New LCD Products and Technologies”
project leader, Professor Hoi Sing Kwok, Director of the Center for Display Research, says their project will be instrumental in helping Hong Kong companies overcome a substantial technology barrier to upgrading their industry by shifting to higher-end and higher value-added display products.“
Controlling the separation of two materials at the interface is the single most expensive problem in the electronics packaging industry and accounts for millions of dollars of added costs;’says electronics packaging project leader, and Director of the Technology GENESIS, 3 March 1999Transfer Center, Dr Matthew M. F. Yuen, "and these costs have hitherto been passed on to the electronics industry and the consumer." This pr句ectwill provide the industry with the software and computer simulations necessary to assure the viability of IC packages at the design stage, as well as methodologies and guidelines for predicting delamination problems in new packages.
Security is the primary concern in all 'smart-card
’
applications, and the main objective of the third project is to develop generic authentication technologies for just this purpose. The project leader, Dr Dit-Yan Yeung, from the Department of Computer Science, says that the pr吋ectwill develop an application-programming interface (API) to provide integrated biometrics and cryptographic technologies for Java-based smart cards. These will be backed up by seminars and training courses, and a web-based resource center wilI also be set up to serve the local smart card industry.
The fourth project will enable garment-related companies to further understand and implement the grading system for the three-dimensional pattern concept. The grading system will enable companies to enhance their skills in using fabrics to produce a variety of garment lines.
