New Courses On Offer at HKUST

School of Humanities and Social

Science

The School of Humanities and Social Science (HSS) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has restructured its courses to broaden the education of undergraduate science, engineering and business students.

Prof Ting Pang-Hsin, Dean of HSS, believes that "deeper training in HSS subjects will increase graduates' career choices and better prepare them for postgraduate pursuits".

From September, the Humanities division will be offering 17 new introductory- level courses, each open to between 200 and 400 students. Included are introductions to Chinese culture, film art, anthropology, philosophy and religion.

The Social Science division will offer four new entry-level courses--introductions to sociology, political science, late-20th century China and contemporary East Asia.

Courses at the higher levels have also been redesigned. Social Science is offering two courses related to the environment and seven new courses with a China focus. Science and technology also come into focus in two new courses, the sociology of science and the history of technology.

Humanities is offering more than 40 new higher-level courses, including contemporary Chinese fiction, cultural identity in Hong Kong, issues in feminism, daily life in imperial China, culture and tourism, the anthropology of food, the Chinese Diaspora, to name only a few.

"The purpose of the courses we offer in the humanities and social sciences at the undergraduate level is to set students on a journey of human discovery," said Assoc. Dean, Dr Angelina Yee. "HKUST graduates will be able to nurture life-long interests in areas outside of their chosen careers, whether it be art, literature, politics or

philosophy. The value of these pursuits cannot be measured."
