HKUST's New Program
Trains Information Engineers
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology will offer a new degree program in September 1997 to prepare students to enter the emerging field of information engineering.
Today, multimedia computing, broad-band telecommunications and internet offers exciting new possibilities in areas such as interactive entertainment, electronic commerce and distance learning.
In the new program, students can earn a BEng in Computer Science (Information Engineering) by concentrating in one of the two areas: networking, which focuses on digital communication and computer networks, or multimedia computing, which looks at computer
processing of text, audio, image and video data, as well as intelligent multimedia human-computer interfaces.
"This new program has been carefully designed to meet the needs of Hong Kong and the region," says Dr Ting-chuen Pong, undergraduate program coordinator in HKUST's Department of Computer Science. "We hope our graduates will be ideal for the abundant job
opportunities in this emerging industry."
"While other information engineering programs are an offshoot of electrical and electronic engineering, our program is unique in its emphasis on software and belongs to computer science," says Dr Pong.
