HKUST to Host Commuter Science Industrv Dav
The first Computer Science Industry Day will take place at the Hong
Kong University of Science and Technology on Friday, 29 April, as part of the Industrial Affiliates Programme initiated by the Department of Computer Science. The programme has been established to strengthen the links between the academic world of research and development and the local industrial community.
“Many research projects done in our department are related to the practical needs of society. Hong Kong SuperNet is one example, which makes low-cost access to Internet available to the public,“. says Dr T.C. Pong, Senior Lecturer in Computer Science. “The Industrial Affiliates Programme will bring about greater technological advancement by encouraging personal and professional relationships with industry that facilitate the exchange of information and sharing of technical expertise.”
“The Department of Computer Science can provide technical advice based on our research which will assist the development of applications relevant to Hong Kong. We also provide assistance on product evaluation, staff recruitment, and employee training. The Programme will offer industrial affiliates an opportunity to provide input regarding our curriculum, so that we can develop it in ways that best meet society’s needs.”
About 40 representatives from industry are expected to attend the Computer Science Industry Day. They will meet faculty members and students of the Department. “It is an excellent opportunity for them to gain a better understanding of our teaching and research programmes and possible future collaborations,“says Dr Pong.
