在某倘不大的成晚時份，當大部份的科大學生仍

然況給於 1_{品的叫的包衷中，芳前中你在晨光柔柔的行人通} 道上走芳，草草然焚覺一些學生在仙似動若一本本房垂壺 的郎神誌，你不必腎、詞 ！ 又是我們見昂的時候了 1 ． 汶錯。 終於出版了 1 ． 期待已久的採翅終於出版了 1 ． 怎麼耍問學役，主個月才有得蛤？是人，于不足嗎？ 是經營短缺嗎？是組織行政失當嗎？ 我不扣這 1 ． 不 ︱︱ 扣 J 這 .. .. 的然，汶育忘記 ︱︱ l 久前忘花，在今年四月時，扳翅雞、手高臨店門辦的 命逞，幸好多位編委相信，文好的明，久，決定齊叫苦苦 經此 τ7 去 ... 久有忘記，今年九月中句時，很翅籌辦在迎新期 間招募新血，初時遷怒反應冷淡，豈料杖。而情況熱烈

對於許多一年級的同學而言，很翅采許紙是一伺

陌生的名詞，位這個代表科大第一份學生刊物，喻意

科大和刊物本身都能在所在空間土振翅是航的求函，

其實已出版了四期 。 時戶由於經濟扭曲 A 人，于不足，我

們一直都與比紋鬆澈的內容和印剎質素妥協，恨我們

亦不曾絕望 1 ︱︱

我們相信，在短短的日子，隨是新同

學帶來的街芋，採翅無論在文章仙風素、題材強蚓、格

醋、編排以至印例上，都會比通信宙斯顯著進步，亦

由於 這份信人信 ，我們許下了扳翅不 Afe 停止拍冀飛翔的

承諾，這倒承諾在上一期汶有兌況，但你和我都汶宵

，失笠，的今期終看到企祈晶晶仇的根何地了

。

在編排止，我們將本刊兮，為校園版、專題以、時

科大小總結

不經不覺科大已跨進了第二個年頭，記得往年， 一批中七畢業的學生，面對著一個重大的抉擇：到底 可否將自己交托給科大呢？當時大家面對的是一所全 新的校舍，一批全新的教授（大部分由外國回來）， 一堆全新的課程，再加上我們這批全新的學生，大家 實在料不到有任何事會發生，但大家都抱著冒 「險 J 、自我挑戰的精神，毅然闖進了科大 ，成為了 第一屆學生。至I）目前為止，我們不會為自己的抉擇而 後悔﹔這一年內 ，校1i.給予我們許多許多，我們亦為 自己建立、爭取了許多許多，也許今天我們可暫作一 個小總結，將這一年內發生在科大的一些有趣、有紀 念性、有意義和具歷史價值的事記下來，也許這會成 為歷史的見誼。

（一）閉幕禮永難忘

假如我問你科大是在那日開幕的，你可否即時回 答，假若你稍有猶疑，我可斷定你一定是今年才進入 科大修讀第一年課程的同學，因為當日的情況，肯定 每位現在二年後的學生也深刻難忘。當日，在 Atrium 搭上一個鐘矮的平台，台上則坐著前度港督 衛奕信爵士，科大校長吳家瑋教授、鍾士元爵士，以 及各科各系的教授，他們都穿著自己的畢業袍，立時 台上成為他們爭耕的地方。而台下則坐著李嘉誠、李 鵬飛等社會上知名人士，各中學及專上學隘的校長、 科大上下的職工和所有學生，他們均靜聽著台上港督 和校長的致詞和鼓勵話。最後，前度港督衛奕信將一 塊遮蓋著象徵科大開幕的石碑的紅布拉開，香港科技 大使正正式式開幕了。（註：科大正式開幕日期為一 九九一年十月十日）

（三）久＋一不通過

在今年的十一月廿四、廿五日，科大學生會的憲 章將會再進行投票，其實早在今年五月已進行了首次 的憲章投票，但結果是差了十一票才過法定通過票數 四百票（約大約當時三分之二的學生） ，結果憲章不 獲通過，而學生會籌委會亦即時進行問卷調查和公開 論壇，就學生會的憲章徵求各同學意見，不少同學均 對憲章部分內容有所保留，更要求有法律人士的意見 和延長諮詢期，最後籌委會決定將全民投票延期，連 科大學生會也要順延下去，故直至現在為止，仍未有 真正屬於科大的學生會出現。 4 振翅

（二）靠超支

定名聲

一提起科大，外界大多數只會想起「超支J 事 件，無疑超支事件惹起了外界人士對科大的注意，但 今次是負面的 ，大家只會責罵科大的建築浪費了納稅 人的錢，大家只會針對科大為何會用亞軍的設計作品 而棄用了冠軍作品，大家只會執著於學生宿舍安裝冷 氣 ，大家只會抨擊校長吳家瑋宿舍旁邊的小型游詠他 等，大家從來沒有想過這些決策背後的原因﹔更沒有 易地而處地想想我們學生的感覺。這﹛牛超支風波最後 經過數度上庭聆訊，甚至吳明欽的死，暫時總算平息 下來了。

（四）WINGS 出

十月二日， WINGS 的創刊號終於出版了， WINGS 是科大的第一本由學生策畫IJ 、籌辦和出版的 刊物 。 由於學生會仍未成立，而 WINGS 仍不能成 為正式的校報，但一畫充滿熱誠和理想的學生，仍在 繁重的功課下抽出一些寶貴的時間，大家一起開會， 商量和袂定 WINGS 的內容和方向，在緊迫的測 驗，考試中抽空做訪問、寫稿、打字、校對和美術等 等工作，共同朝著一個目標一一讓科大學生擁有一份 完全屬於自己的刊物。而 WINGS （振翅）正象徵 著各科大同學和科大在振翅高飛，他朝定能一飛沖天

表哀悼

科大的第二期工程正進行得如火如荼，但第一期

的建築物亦不時需要維修及增建。大約於九三年四月

中， 一名搭棚工人在學生宿舍外牆築棚工作，因一時 失足而從十五樓高處墮下地面受重傷 ，而傷者在送往 聯合醫院救治時已誼賓不治，當時學生宿舍中亦有不 少學生目睹意外發生經過，事後校方更將死者墮下處 劃分起來，而死者家人亦會請一些法師在死者墮下處 進行一些法事，宿生會更鼓動了一次募捐的活動，以 表我們學生對死者的哀悼。

（五）初出師

即告捷

四位科大電腦系同學黃永建、沈毅豪、因英偉和 許敢進在毫無心理準備及經驗下，竟然、擊敗了來自香 港大學、中文大學、理工學院、城市理工學院、浸會 學臣和嶺南學院的同學，勇奪了九三年七月初舉行的 大專院校第二屆「電腦程式設計比賽 J 的冠軍。是次 比賽，每學院均揀出四人一組，每組使用兩部電腦， 在四小時內盡可能解決大會所定的六項程式難題，以 最快時間解決最多難題者為勝反。科大四位同學在最 初三個半小時內，只解決了一項難題，但餘下的半小 時內﹔貝IJ 迅速地完成多兩條題目，較亞軍和季軍組別 多了一題。四位科大同學出師告捷，擊敗其他院按老 手，為科大建立聲望。

B. S. U. 早成立

和大的學生會（ S.U. ）至今仍未正式成立，但 BSU 早在今年年頭一月十日便正式選出了第一屆幹 辜會，記得往年開學初期，已不斷有一些同學發起成 立一些興趣或學術的學會，其中以 B S.U. 的規模最 大，成立之初已有三、 四十人參與，工作效率非常 高，不用兩個月便完成一份完整的憲章，雖然憲章內 容曾受到一些商學院同學抨擊 ，但最後也成功地通過 憲章 ，而且第一屆幹事選舉日也訂於一九九一年一月 十日，而唯一的候選內閣 OASIS 亦輕地取得四分一 以上的選票而當選，並於三月十日正式舉行第一屆幹 事的就職典禮。成為科大第一個成立的學院聯盟。

（尤）抄功課詩的首

在往年的聖誕假期， CS 同學共有三個程式設 計的功課，而且每個程式均需一段頗長的時間，最後 有些同學在時間緊迫情況下，向其他同學借他們的程 式作參考，甚至有些同學將他人的程式搬字過 「碟」， 一式一樣的抄了一份。但今次抄襲程式的事 件給他們的 TA 發覺了，並要尋根究底，追查下 去，要求所有會抄過程式或偕程式給他人抄襲的同學 均要向 TA 自首，即時所有 c.s. 同學皆人心惶惶， 人人自危：會抄襲他人程式不知應否去自首，而其他 自己設計程式的同學叉恐怕自己的程式被他人抄襲後 自己也不知。最後，這件風波在扣分的小小懲罰下結 束了（自首者，按抄功課的程度而扣分﹔沒自首而被 發覺抄襲者，該份功課則只是 F 級）。 就個人立場，選擇了以上九件事為一小總結， 而 第十件事就交由你來作決定，也許你覺得以上九件事 也是做不足道，瑣碎小事，現在就請你將你心目中的 大事記下來，投進 WINGS 的信箱，讓我替你繼續 去發掘。 6 振翅

對一個由文科班升讀科大商學院的學生來說，要 修讀微積分（ MATHS 001 Calculas ） ，確實是一件 非常艱難的事，就算他們平時上足堂、做足功課和溫 習充足，也未必一定能追得上，因為他們實在欠缺一 些基本的數學知識．。於是商學院的同學便向校方反映 他們的情況，經過校方的深究考查 ，終於找出了一個 解決辦法，增設一科 MATHS 005 ( Algebra &

Cal-culus

Know more about the Halls and fhe Wardens

Halls play a special role in campus life. By being

more than a place to sleep and study, the halls

provide an

opportunity

for students to make friends

with each

other

and to experience a true sense of

community.

There will be a total

of

six halls

on

campus. Two

halls, named as Postgraduate Hall I and 11, are for

postgraduate students

.

The other four halls, named

as Undergraduate Hall I, II,

and IV;

are

for

undergraduate students. Postgraduate Hall I and

Undergraduate Hall I are already

in

use. The others

will be available for admission of

residents

in the

Spring Semester in early 1993. Hall places will be

sufficient for all full-time PG and UG students in

the Spring Semester.

By now students will have received a letter from

the

Hall

Wardens, informing them of which halls

they belong in the Spring Semester. Some of the

students may have already met their Wardens in the

tea

gathering earlier this semester and in

other

occasions

such

as

the

inter-hall

activity

WHAT IS "CEAPS"?

CEAPS stands for Career Educatwn and Placement

Service.

It

is a new service provided by the Student Affairs

Office which aims at facilitating students:

a.

to better prepare themselves for the world of work

after graduation; and

to identify cru:eer opportunities and to obtain a

suitable employment after graduation and during the

long holiday breaks.

WHAT ARE THE WORK AREAS OF "CEAPS"?

CEAPS consists of 2 main components :

Career Educatwn

Major activities include :

a.

general announcements and infonnation giving in

the fonn of posters, circulars, handouts, and

pamphlets;

b.

talks, seminars and workshops with guest speakers

on topics related

to

job search, various employment

sectors and career fields;

c.

visits by students to prospective employers;

d.

career group programmes (e.g. Self-Understanding

Groups, Career Exploration Workshops) facilitated

by a Student Counsellor;

e.

individual career counselling to students; and

f.

computer-aided career education programmes.

Placement Service

This includes the following main areas of work :

a.

solicit both full-time and short tenn employments

for

graduating

and

undergraduate

students

respectively by mass appeals and through personal

contacts;

b.

c.

publicize job vacancies and career opportunities to

students;

arrange on-campus recruitment

talks

and on-campus

interviews for graduating students.

In addition, the CEAPS will also set up a Placement

lnfonnation Centre (PIC) in the near future with reference

materials on job search; major employers; further study

opportunities and job vacancies for easy consultation by

students.

WHO RUNS "CEAPS"?

Two Student Counsellors, both of them have more

than

years' experience in career education and placement work in

tertiary educational settings, are now responsible for the

CEAPS. They are:

UST Sports Stars of Tomorrow

A total of thirteen UST sports learns have been formed to compete in various events

organized by the Hong Kong Post-Secondary Colleges Athletic Association, including

badminton, basketball, cross-country, swimming, table-tennis, tennis, track

&

field, soccer and

volleyball. 'This year we emphasize on participation and friendship, although we definitely

like to bring home some good results,' said Miss Theresa Leung, Physical Education Officer

of SAO.

STUDENT DANCING CLUB

The club was set up in

1991.

It

has the objectives of

arousing students' interests in dancing

,

boardening

their knowledge on dancing through the courses and

activities provided. In addition, entertaining and

ex-ercising students out dancing are also the goals of the

club.

The club had organized many events in the past, like

Christmas ball, O'night, and disco night. The dancing

courses are also under the way.

Wonderful then! The Christmas ball is coming soon

(in December? after the final examination!) which

seems to be a good chance for students to relax

.

THE DEBATING SOCIETY

The Debating Society was formally

founded in

1991.

It

aims at arousing

stu-dents' interest in debate as well as their

social awareness.

·

The society had been holding a lot of

competitions in the past, both internally

and externally

.

For example, an

inter-College debating competition was held

lately at New City Plaza, with opposing

teams from the Chinese University of

Hong Kong and the City Polytechnic of

Hong Kong. The overall performance

was satisfactory, though our team did not

carry off any prize. Futhermore, general

lectures on debate were organized to

guide the members.

Following that are a number of

Inter-house competition and Inter-institution

debating contest in December. Don't

miss them!

The Student Drama Club was formally

welcoming meeting was

have a show on their own. All

The aim of the club is to promote music

clubs in the

Uni-versity

.

In

a short

foundation period of

one month on)y

the club has already

recruited over 150 members.

Besides holding

some

video

shows

of pop

singers, the club

also

held

a

Singing

Con-test,

"Music

Motion" in April-, last year.

There were

50 competitors

formed by

in-dividuals

,

groups

and

representatives

from different floors of the Residential

Hall. They

all

proved themselves to be

talented singers

and

the whole

event

en-tertained

a

total of

450

audience.

In

the near future, the club is planning

for another

similar

Singing Contest,

some

other video

shows

and perhaps

some

classical music conc'erts

.

Inter-College

Music Association Singing Contest is

also

under planning. Presumably,

representa-tives from different tertiary institutions

will

compete

with one

another

in

a

tough

and exciting

manner.

9 月 26 日原是一個很普通的日子，但是，對科大的同學們來說，卻是 一個難忘的日子。因為這天是 Fall Semester 的體育課程註珊日 。 今年體育課程的種類頗多，共有十一種體育活動（共同學選擇：有室 外、室內的、團體的、個人的。當中包括足球、排球、網球、羽毛球和社 交舞等，合共提供六百六＋五個名額予全校同學。每位同學可選擇一種自 己喜歡的運動參加。同學無需對話項活動有所認識，兼且有專業教練負責 教授，因此，明引到很多同學報名參加。 但是，由於名額只有六百多個，而全校學生總數卻是一千七E多人。 在僧多粥少的情況下，同學便須以先到先得的方法報名。在那天早土八時 左右，已有一艦長長的人龍，由 LG1031 伸長至進鬥拱廊，真是人山人 海，萬人通巷。有些熱心的同學，甚至在當天凌晨時兮，已在 LG1031 門 口排除，甚至在那襄露宿一宵。他們那麼熱心，無非是希墓能排得（頭 位 j ，報讀自己喜歡的運動。從訪問同學口中得知，最熱門的運動是網網 球。很多遲來的同學，因不能報讀心目中理想的運動，而發出怨言哩。

十二位籃球好手經過一連串的考驗後，終 於順利成為我校的男子籃球隊隊員 。 據楊教練表示，當招收男子籃球隊員的通 告貼出後，反應異常踴躍。報名的同學多是中 學校險的成員，因此都體格強健，身手矯捷。 這次選拔的項目包括九＋秒全場運球上 籃 、 五個定點射球和分組比賽。 九十秒全場運 球上籃要求參加者不停地把籃球從球場的一端 運到另一端繼而上籃投射 。但時間只有短短 的一分半鐘，因此要得到高分數的話，非但要

有好的運球技術和適當的步法

。

還要跟時間

競賽，以爭取一分一秒，而五個定點 射球則要求球員站在五個不間的指 定位置上投射。這回真是考眼界 的時刻﹔因為角度既定，能不 能準確地投射，就只有靠自己 的眼界和力度的控制，稍有偏 差，便會失去分數 。 至於分組此賽，顧名思義是 把參加者分成組別進行比賽﹔當 此賽的隊伍集在一邊競賽時，餘下 的球員急不及待地在另一邊投射，而楊 教練則聚精會神地觀看，以對各球員的全面 按術有進一步的認諧。 楊教練叉表示，被挑選的球員中有個別的 技術突出，唯獨尚欠默契，當然這是需要時間 培養的 。他更希望落選的同學不用灰心，來年 再接再勵。 現在籃球隊上正密鑼緊鼓練習，準備蒼十 一月在浸會學院舉行的大專盃賽 。 另一方面，女子籃球隊今年剛成立，趕不 及為大專盃賽作充足的準備，因此將不會參加 比賽。

足三王求

足球是現今最受歡迎的體育活動之一，但 為何在科大校園裹，此項活動好像是不大流行 的呢？筒中原因是什麼呢？經過幾番調查及訪 問後，我們發覺原來同學並非不熱衷於足球活 動，而是受蒼場地供應及時間的限制。 本校的室內運動場館雖司提供室內足球設 施予問學使用，但是借用時間只限於逢星期五 下午二時至四時間 。很多同學因受到時間限制 的影響而失去了練習足球的機會。 姑勿論現時校方所提供的足球設施足夠與 否，同學們及學生事務辦事處又做了什麼 以推動科大校園裹的足球風氣呢？ 學校提供足球訓練課程予初學 者參加 。 另一方面，足球會己於 去年四月底成立。 該會主席是 二年級學生麥展鵬 。 足球會現 已招收了百餘名會員，而在未 來日子襄會員招募計劃仍會進 行 。據該會負責人透露，他們在 本學期仍沒有舉辦任何此賽及活動 ，是因為學生事務辦事處巴計劃舉辦 社際比賽，加上因安場地所限，本學期 的活動大計已順延至下一學期舉辦。 屆 時，新的足球場便會落成，活動大計更能有效 地進行。

此賽方面，他們已於去年舉辦了院際此

賽：商學院、工程學院及科學院。 最後由商學

院勝出

J。SEPH LIN 問：科大前景如何？ 答： 一片光明，科大是一間著重學術研究的大學，是一種新 嘗試。 問：科大學生質素如何？ 答：與美國出名的私立大學比較，香港學生成績一般比他們 好，可能科大收生成績高，即使英文科也不俗， 在高級程度 會考獲取乙或以上的學生，水準平均高於一般美國的學生。 香港教育雖然是填鴨式，但是有成績，學生們所學到的比美 國學生廣泛些， 但是學生比較被動。 問： 除了學術上成就，如何令到學生有均衡的發展？ 答： 學生應該多利用課餘時間 ， 主動地去組織一些興趣學 會，例如：戲劇、作詩、朗誦．．．．．．等等。 問： 設施怎麼樣？ 答：圖書館非常好，希望同學們多利用它。設備先進，都很 滿意，只嫌電腦數量不夠，而且經常壤，希望遲些有所改 善。 問：有沒有打算在港逗留長些時間教導我們？ 答：如無意外，我會留在香港 ，除非有些政治因素，令我無 法留港，否則，我非常樂意在科大任教。 DR. GRACE AU 問：你覺得科大學生質素如何？ 答 ： 與英國學生比較，上堂時很靜 ，很乖，發間較少 ， 可能 是斯文啦。 問：面對如此斯文的學生，你會覺得失望嗎？ 答 ：要經過一段時間來認識大家，對我而言是一種挑戰 ，可 選用不同方式來幫助學生由被動改變為主動。 問 ：學校之設施如何？ 答：設施先進，現時還未完成第二期及第三期建築 ，暫時可 能有些不足 ， 比如：電腦，學生趕功課時就有些不足 夠，但希望第二期工程完成後 ， 有所改善。 問： 教育制度有何意見 ，例如 ：四年制改為三年制，你覺得 怎麼樣？ 答 ：我由英國回來，英國都是三年制，如果， 學生在三年內 積極地，努力地去學習 ， 三年課程之內容已經很足夠， 因為有些學生，希望三年內畢業後，即速到社會里（故 事。喜歡讀書的學生 ，可以繼續讀碩士或博士。 問： 是否太多功課給學生，以致令學生無暇參加課外活動 呢？ 答：我覺得在外國讀書，功課都很多 ，可能無其他活動玩， 而香港學生 ， 貝IJ有很多活動。其實，功課越多 ，等如幫 助學生溫書，待考試時比較輕鬆些。辦教育，是培養一 班有用的年青人，老師當然是教書本上之知識，做人的 道理，使將來可以在社會上出人頭地。另一方面 ， 有一 個璟境給學生們培養自己的興趣 ，參予一些活動 ，也可 從中領略到一些非科技及學術上的知識。分配時間是很 重要的，衡量自己的能力， 這樣 ，讀書及參于課外活 動，便可兩者兼得。 問 ：你對科大有何目標？有何期望？ 答：目標就是成為東南亞最好的科學、技術大學，商學院佔 著一個很重要的地位。培養下一代成為質素高的人 ， 對 社會有貢獻是最期望的。 問 ：科大在國際及香港人仕心目中，有何地位？ 答 ： 國際間已經有很多人知道香港有一間科技大學的存在， 好幾位在外國有知名度教書的香港老師、中國老師、台 灣老師，都被科大邀請來港任教 ，而且老師們有時把他 們的作品、學說，于IJ豎在國際知名之雜誌或周于IJ 上。他 們出席一些大型會議，發表一些演講，讓外間知道科大 有一班老師正在積極地研究及教導下一代。香港人對科 大認識不深 ，可能是在摸索中 ，因為學生還未畢業 ，估 計不到他們的質素如何 。但是已有很多知名人仕及富 商，捐錢贊助科大，他們都是期望將來科大畢業生能夠 為社會作出貢獻。 問 ： 如何幫助外間認識科大？ 答：老師及學生事務處 ，時常安排一些特別節目給社會知名 人仕、富商、工商業人仕’讓他們知道我校在各方面的 發展情況，我們在未來一兩年間，會朝著這方針走，會 有更加多節目、多與工商業人仕一同研究、合作，希望 經過一段日子 ，社會能夠接受我們的學校及我們所教育 出來的學生。 各位同學 ，看完了這兩篇訪問，我們身為科大學生的一 份子，是否應該採取較主動的學習態度 ， 多舉辦興趣學會。 另外搜集了一些關於科大講師的資料 ，他們在過去十年當 中，曾經在美國經濟評論上獲刊登的論文，共有五篇，而在 政治經濟學報里 ， 八篇是香港學者寫的論文，而其中七篇是 科大教職員所寫的。我們就讀於擁有眾多地位崇高學者作教 的學府，正所謂：「工欲善其事，必先利其器。」我們擁有 優夏的師資、先進的設施 ， 應當重加努力、勤奮 ，希望不久 的將來 ，我們能對社會有所貢獻 ，共同達到理想的目標一一 東南亞最好的大學一一「科技大學。 J 23 振翅

Dr. Ch。i 問： 你覺得科大由外地聘請了許多導師，是否忽略了香港本 地之教授？ 答 ：首先要指出的是和其他 UPGC 屬下的大專院校比較， 科大聘請的“香港人”的比例並不少。其次是在香港取得 博士學位的學者還是不多。我想，這一方面是因為早年 繼續攻讀博士學位的香港人並不多 ， 另一方面是由於很

外國。加上近數年香港

大專院校擴充得很快， 在僧多粥少、選取賢能的競爭條 件下，科大很自然的便聘請了許多外地的導師。 問： 你覺得科大學生的質素如何？ 答：很不錯吧。不過，質素是一回事 ，如何把質素發揮出來 又是一回事。科大有優良的設施和師資，但是還未建立 出一個傳統來。我想，‘在科學研究和學習的過程中如 何把人及社會這兩個要素放在一起考慮，，這一點是建 立“科大傳統”的一個很重要的地方。這也是如何把“科 大人’，塑造成為一個同時具人性和理性的科學家、工程 師、銀行家等等的一個很重要的傳統。 問 ：你覺得科大的教學制度又如何？ 答： 我想學生的功課和考試是太多了 。這大抵和三年的教育 制度有關吧。大學是要來訓練學生的獨立思考和分析的 能力 。從資料收集、排比、分析至IJ重新整理出一個結構 嚴密的“故事”的過程，並不能從一般的考試中得到。此 外，應該強調的是大學裡的人艾及社會科學課程的目的 並非加強學生的語學能力 。 問：你覺得科大的教學設施有何意見？ 答：視聽器材都很先進，中央電腦網絡也很方便。圖書館雖 然、藏書不多 ， 但是透過館際網絡，基本上還可以應付教 學之用。 、.. / 問： 除了教學設施，你對科大其他設施有何評價？ 答：體育及運動設施雖然尚少，但還可以吧。希望學校能夠 提供多些宿位予各同學。這不單可以減少同學在舟車所 用的時間，同時也可以讓同學有更多利用圖書館及實 驗室、電腦中心的設施的撥會。而且，也可以給學生體

問：你對科大的璟境有何看法？ 答：璟境優美，很漂亮。只是活動範圍好像少 7 一點 。假如 有多一點草坪給學生坐在那裡聊聊天、曬曬太陽那就更 好了 。 Dr. F『ancisLui 24 振翅

雷鼎鳴去年（九一年七月四日）自美國水牛城紐約洲立 大學返回香港任教，擔任科大經濟系高級講師， WINGS 學生有幸向他進行訪問 。 雷鼎鳴十分健談且幽默，在大約兩小時的訪問過程中雷 鼎鳴侃侃而談，表達了他對本校生質素、教育設施和教學制 度的一些意見 ，以及他個人對科大的期望。 雷鼎鳴認為科大學生的質素普遍不錯，以他所熟悉的工 商學院為例，學生的入學要求一般都要十八分或以下，所以 科大雖然較其它各院校為新 ，學生質素方面卻並不職蝕 ，而 他對學生上年的表現也頗滿意。但由於香港教育制度的一些 缺陷 ，本校同學與香港大多數學生都有同樣的通病。首先， 由於香港學生分科較旱，形成知識面狹窄，很多文科生對理 科知識一無所知，而理科生對文科知識所知也鳳毛麟角，這

識分子，不是只懂撥械式操作的機械人。 雷鼎鳴以一個過來人的身份，談及他讀大學時的經驗。 雷鼎鳴在中學時雖然是一個理科生，但在大學時主動找了許 多西方和中國的經典著作來閱讀，例如盧梭的「 R約論」， 柏拉圖共和國、黑格爾「精神現象學」、莊子、韓非子等 書，這些書對他日後的思維幫助很大 ，故此雷博士勸勉同學 們也應該接觸一下哲學科目，特別是香港的中國人，應對中 國文化有一定認識，除此以外，文科生應讀一點理科科目， 令自己眼光和見識不至太狹牢。而理科生就算入讀商學院， 也應繼續選一些理科科目來讀。 至於大學生需要的獨立思考方式，雷鼎鳴以為在香港考 試制度的控措下 ，同學們在中學時期的訓練額然不足夠，香 港的教育制度比較注重記憶和背誦，而少注重思考。但一個 人要適應社會，必需有獨立思考和變通的能力 。背誦只能應 用於一時，不能應用於長遠，雷鼎鳴舉了個例子：據說美國 曾經有一個對擁有MBA學位的專業人士的調查，結果顯示 在所學的東西中， 只有百分之七能在日後在社會中工作時應 用到，這是因為社會轉變太快了，知識推陳出新，很難預測 以後的商業璟境。所以真正能受用一生的不是背誦課本，而 是靈活變通。雷鼎鳴繼續舉了一個例：當年一個芝加哥大學 攻讀經濟系學士學位的學生 ，在四年內要讀大約是四十五鬥 學科，其中只有八科是有關於經濟學的，其餘都是通識教育 的學科，例如人文、社會、語言等等。但芝加哥大學的經濟 系卻是全世界最好的，九0 、九一、九二連續三年的諾貝爾 經濟學得主都是出自芝加哥大學 ，它的大學本科生 ，一般都 能進入最好的研究院，這個例子說明變通和通才的重要性。 雷鼎鳴建議同學們做一些PROJECTS ’因為這樣可以嚴鍊 應變和獨立思考能力。 雷鼎鳴說：香港需要高科技 ﹔要求高科技 ， 就必需有人 才，科技大學就是很好的培養人才的基地，以基地製造人 才 ，人才創造成果， 進而將成果商品化，最後得以推動香港 經濟的發展。 事實上，雷鼎鳴返港的主因之一 ，當然是他看好科大的 學術璟境，科大研究院藏龍臥虎，就以經濟系為例，除艾禮 智、鄭同漢等著名教授外，還有一大班極具潛力的教授和 研究人員，從他的語氣中，可知道他對科大前途確是充滿信 心的！ ＼ AKF ＼、 \

OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTING R-Reporter C-Yew Ming

R: What do you think of the general standard of the new HKUST students?

C: Compared to the students in the previous year, the new batch of students seems to be more diligent and better prepared for University life. They have probably ben

-efited from the experience of the pioneer batch of students.

Generally, we have good students at HKUST.

R: Can you think of any differences between overseas students and UST students?

C: Students at overseas universities (e.g. U.K. and Aus

-tralia ) are more outspoken and critical during their lecture and tutorial sessions. Our students are less outspoken. This could be due to their shyness and lack of practice of spoken English language. The lecturer's task of assessing their understanding of the subject matter and progress in their work is made more chal

-lenging as a consequence. (Yew Ming is aware that the average student possesses a good command of English and writes quite fluently.)

Students are unnecessarily concerned in question-ing the relevance of studying under the North American model of education in the Hong Kong environment. Instead, they Should be aware that they will learn more in some areas. For example, the general principles of accounting are similar in the U.S. and in Hong Kong. In the accounting lectures, the lecturers will highlight any differences in the accounting practice~ and standards wherever necessary. Exposure to the two systems of accounting will better prepare the students for their working life. Furthermore the students will find it easier to adapt to the different models of education should they decide to further their studies overseas.

R: What is in a University life for UST students? C: University life is an important part of the learning

process for students. This is a good time for students to develop their social interaction skills besides obtaining an academic qualification. At HKUST, the learning process will be more challenging as the students are also involved in the process of creating a niche for them-selves in the Hong Kong Tertiary Institutions Scene.

There is no tradition or culture for them to maintain and emulate. I am very impressed about the ways which the students fo about establishing new societies and organ-ising activities. These are indications of an active and participative student population.

R: Do you think that the workload of UST students is quite heavy?

C: UST places a high premium on the education of her students. It is,therefore, not surprising to see that the students are hard-pushed in their studies. There are five subjects which a HKUST student takes a semester on a two-semester per annum system. In fact, I notice that the course coverage for some subjects ( e.g. Accounting l O l couse) are wider and more in-depth. The students at HKUST are taking it in their strides. After all, they are doing in three years of what is normally a four-year programme in the U.S.A.

·R: Therefore, you also acknowledge that the workload of UST is quite heavy.then do you think that the students have time to take part in any extra-curricular activities? C: I would consider the student workload to be reasonably demanding. If students are more selective in choosing the extra-curricular activities, they can still participate and enjoy themselves without affecting their studies. It's all a matter of proper time-management. It is also a good time for the students to learn how todecide independnetly and to live with the consequences of their decisions.

R: What do you think about the quality oflecturers in UST? C: We have an impressive group of academics at HK UST.

The credentials and the faculties speak well for them -selves. I found that the faculties are very dedicated to research and committed to teaching. They are highly

knowledgeable and are enthusiastic in passing on their knowledge to the students. The students should

capital-ize on the knowledge of the faculties and try to learn as

much as possible during their stay at HKUST. R: How about the facilities provided by UST?

C: I am impressed by the advanced technology applied to the facilities at HKUST. The increased number of students are placing a strain on the demand for certain

-lems to be expected of a new organisation. What is

important is that students are not depeived of the

required facility/equipment to do their work. It is a

matter of an-anging the time for the use of the required facility/equipment. In this aspect, I think the Universtity

administration comes up tops.

R: Can lectuers benefit from the services provided by the library?

C: The library is doing well in coping with the demads of facilities. Sometimes it is inconvenient not to have back issues of some academic journals in the library, as we tend to require a pai1icular article immediately. Hovever,

the library staff are very helpful in ensuring that we get

what we request through the inter-library loan system,

although this may take some time. Given time and

resources, I and comfident that the library will be one

of the best equipped information resource centres in the region.

R: Do you think that the quality of food provided by the

canteen is not up to your expectation?

C: I can't say much on the quality of the food sold at the

canteen. However, I feel that we do get value for our money (in terms of the quantity and service).

OK 、集體遊戲等。我覺得這些活動是應該學辦的， 可 以幫助同學舒餒一下平時緊迫的學習生活，但至今這類 活動好像是「攪」多了一點 ，而忽略了一些時事性較強 的活動。作為一個大學生，未來社會棟樑’科大同學應 多了解社會及增強社會責任感。況且我們現在處於「開 荒 J 期，應把握這個「資金機會 j ’去建立及培育出一 種獨特的，屬於我們「科大人 J 的「科大文化 J 。 A ：普通來說，同學們都認為科大的功課量較重 ，但另一方 面，校方認為學生亦應參于多些課外活動，藉此使學生 能得到全面的身心發展，你認為在所提及的情況下， 這 個教學目標能達成嗎？ 口：首先，我覺得身為「全日制 j學生 ，同學們是應該放學 校的功課及工作在第一位，應儘量利用在學校的時間 （尤其是空堂）溫習功課，而不是四處找人聊天 ，打發 時間。另外，課外活動是應該參予的，藉此同學能從中 學習到人際關係的技巧、籌辦活動的經驗和訓練自己的 分析能力，亦能有機會將在課堂上學到的運用到實際情 況中。 大學提供了一個很好的璟境、設施及資源去訓練自己。 這里給子同學從錯誤中學習的機會 ，同學到畢業後出 來做事，撥會未必有這麼多 ，而從錯誤中學習的代價 亦大得多了。因此，同學應在大學時期儘量爭取機會訓 練自己， 學習如何分配自己的時間，使學業和課外活 動方面有均衡的發展。只要學生懂得如何運用時間及 自律， 一切都會迎刃而l解。 A ：對於科大現行的教學制度，你又有什麼意見呢？ 口：科大沿用美式大學學分制，並提供了通識課程。通識諜 程其實是十分好的，因為學生能藉此擴闊自己的視野令 各同學的知識不致於局限在主修科目中。但因著大學三 年制的關係’課程就變得緊迫起來。因為同學們只用三 年的時間去學習其他國家的大學的四年制課程。因此， 科大的課程便比較緊密。所以同學應與講師通力合作， 提出一些「建設性的意見J去改善一些不滿意的地方， 而不是以「走堂」來以示抗議，這樣對同學及講師都沒 有好處。 A ：你認為科大的商學臣 ，能否在十年間成為全亞洲最好的 商學眠之一？ 口：絕對有可能，而且不單止是商學院，整間大學亦是 ，因 為我們現在擁有（或將會擁有）的設備極好，師資亦絕 對不比北美那些一流大學遜色，講師級或以上的教員都 有博士學位（很少大學能做到此點的），同學的質素亦 「有得彈」，所以只要各方面通力合作 ，我有信心十年 內科大能成為亞洲 MIT （麻省理工）。 後語： 在訪問過程中， Patrick透露他來科大任教的兩個主要 原因：一是希望能藉著科大的設施，進行及完成一些對香港 社會有貢獻的研究。二是可以享受那份與同學一起「開荒 j 的感覺。在香港，只有科大能夠給予他這種「共同建設 j 的 感受及滿足慰。最後 Patrick 亦表示歡迎同學（任何學院、 任何學系）找他「傾計 j ，無論是有關學習上的問題或是如 何適應大學生活都可以。 Job 4 End 科技大學職員

＊首先 ，科大的同學給你一個怎樣的印象？ 普通來說， 科大的同學的質素都很好。可是，他們比較 被動 ， 在上課時很少發間。 ＊其實這會不會是因為教學時必須用英文有關呢？而你認為 這是否必須呢？ 在lecturer class 來說 ，用英文是必須的 ，因為有些講師 是不懂聽廣東話 ，但在 turorial class ’我認為則可用廣 東話。 ＊你對於科大的教育制度有何看法？會不會認為太多考試而 令同學感到太大壓力呢？ 學校方面也明白這個問題。其實同學可以在開學前做一些 預備功夫，例如，在暑期期間可報讀學校舉辦的課程，這 樣入學後便可輕鬆些及更容易掌握功課上的問題。 ＊作為 Algebra and Calculus 的講師， 一些商管系的同學

認為他們實在也有修讀 Math111 的必要。 因為這個課程 太深 ，而對他們亦不公平，你又認為如何呢？ 其實是有必要把同學分為幾班的。因為有些同學已有兩年 沒有讀數學 ，但於他們來說 ， 實在需要時間去重新適應， 所以他們讀的課程會比較基本。相反來說，如果理科生去 讀Math 005 ，他們便會學不到新的東西及沒有得益了。 ＊對於科大超吏 ，你又有何看法呢？ 我認為不應花太多錢在裝修上，而應把資金用在其他地方 ，例如研究工作，增加人力資源等。 ＊作為研究生的監督 ，你覺得同學在宿舍里是否自律呢？ 相對來說， postgraduate 比 undergraduate 更有自律性及 處事要成熟，他們會較少發出太大的聲淚。 而 under­ graduate 則比較貪玩及活躍，他們時常都有聚會。雖然 有時會發出擾人聲痕，但情況仍可接受。 ＊對於沒有宿舍的同學來說， 交通是不甚方便，你有何建議 去改善這情形？男外，「屈蛇 J 情況嚴不嚴重呢？ 我希望學校能夠建更多宿舍去提供給每一位同學。而我覺 得「屈蛇」情況並不嚴重。 ＊轉一轉話題，你覺得「走堂」情況利不利害？男外，你認 為學生與講師的關係如何呢？ 在我所教的學生中，「走堂 j 情況並不嚴重。而有些同學 遲到是值得原諒的，因為上一堂的講師可能並不知道夠鍾 下課以致延誤了時間，所以我提議學校可安裝一些鳴鐘， 這樣便可提醒我們上課及下諜的時間。而學生和講師的關 係大致很好，但亦有少許言語上的隔膜。 ＊你為什麼進入科大任教呢？ 因為這是一間新的大學 ，它有一個明確的目標。另外，我 希望在一九九七前能夠貢獻一些給社會。 ＊最後 ，你覺得同學有那些地方要改進呢？ 大致上已很好。但我希望他們踴躍發間，很多同學都恐怕 問了一些錯的問題，其實這是不緊要的。另外，歡迎同學 來我的辦公室問我功課上的問題。 ＊多謝你接受我的訪問。 28 振翅
