The Frisbee was thrown __(1)__ the ocean. David attempted to chase it __(2)__ the danger. __(3)__, he was lifted up into the air by a huge wave. __(4)__ seconds, he landed on his head.

David lost the use of his legs and only had partial use of his hands. He was __(5)__ to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. However, his doctors believed that playing table tennis would give him a good chance __(6)__ full use of both hands. It quickly became clear that he was very talented at the sport, and he was keen to show the world __(7)__. As he recovered, he gradually moved from the ping-pong table to a regular tennis court. 1. People always complain that in-flight food tastes bad. However, it’s not the airlines’ fault if their food doesn’t taste like what you __(1)__. I know that, since my job is to make in-flight meals.

Studies have shown that when you’re up in the air, your tongue doesn’t work well. Because of changes in the air pressure and humidity in the airplane cabin, your tongue is less sensitive to tastes. __(2)__, your nose functions differently. Up in the sky, it gets __(3)__ blocked that it has difficulty telling the difference between tastes. Even your ears can influence how __(4)__ you enjoy your meal. An airplane cabin can be noisy during a flight, and experiments have shown that food tastes less sweet or salty when there’s lots of noise.

As a cook, I try to add more flavoring __(5)__ the dishes to make them tastier. Therefore, don’t blame me if you don’t like your in-flight meal. Blame your tongue, your nose, and your ears!

Then, she turned to me and asked, “Beef or chicken?” I paused. She held up two trays __(2)__ me decide. She probably wondered how long it would take me to choose.

I looked at the guy beside me again. Though he just shook his head, this somehow persuaded me. “Just a bottle of water for me too, please,” I said.

After the flight attendant was gone, the man said, “You made the right choice. Food never tastes as __(3)__ as it does on the ground. That’s __(4)__ they cook and cool it hours earlier, and then reheat it. Plus, the cabin environment, __(5)__ makes the air in here thinner and drier, affects the sense of taste.” Then he smiled and tapped my water bottle with his own. “Enjoy not having your meal!”

One charity* in Australia, known as OzHarvest, found it __(2)__ terrible that they decided to do something about it. They started collecting untouched in-flight meals from airports every day. Their team of drivers then delivered the food to those in need, and to other charities __(3)__ provide meals for homeless or needy people.

OzHarvest has been very successful so far, working with airlines __(4)__ Virgin Australia. __(5)__, since 2015, they have provided over one million meals for needy children all around the country. Thanks to

You’ll never hear this announcement. __(2)__, in-flight food does taste different. Your tongue doesn’t __(3)__ the same up in the air. Low humidity and air pressure make your tongue less sensitive __(4)__ different flavors. When you fly, your nose also becomes __(5)__ it doesn’t function well. Even your ears can affect how __(6)__ you enjoy your meal. Food doesn’t taste as sweet or salty in noisy places as it does in a quieter environment. Therefore, noisy airplane engines may make your food __(7)__ bland. Airlines know our organs are affected during a flight and have some solutions. British Airlines gives nasal spray __(8)__ stuffy noses. Most airlines add more flavoring __(9)__ the dishes to make them tastier. Also, ingredients with rich flavors that remain yummy up in the air, __(10)__ tomatoes, mushrooms and spinach, are added.

5. The Emirates Flight Catering facility is one of the world’s biggest food factories. In fact, it produces an average of 180,000 airline meals every single day! __(1)__ this possible, they stay open around the clock and employ over 11,000 workers.

The factory is located in Dubai and covers 174,000 square meters, an area __(2)__ is equal to around 24 soccer fields! Every day, their massive bakery section produces around half a million different items such as cupcakes, bread rolls, and cookies. They also process around twenty tons of fish, meat, and eggs during the day. __(3)__, 20,000 kilograms of vegetables pass through the factory every 24 hours.

Emirates’ food service is so large __(4)__ it provides meals and snacks for over a hundred different airlines. No matter* who you’re flying with, __(5)__, your onboard meal might be from Emirates. Enjoy! Or, as they say in Dubai: bialeafiata*!

(11)

The first thing Scott wanted to know was which special meals he could pre-order for two fellow travelers. One was a Muslim* and didn’t eat any pork. Another was on a diet and preferred a “low calorie” option. Lisa assured* him that meals following Muslim-friendly __(3)__ were available, as well as low-sugar, low-fat meals.

Next, Scott expressed his concerns about the very dry cabin air during a flight, saying this might make the meals not as delicious as they __(4)__ on the ground. Lisa again told him not to worry, __(5)__ Angel Air always offered nasal spray free of charge to passengers. By the time he hung up, Scott was very impressed with the airline’s service. “Well, they passed that test with flying colors*” he thought, picking up his Rome travel guide once more.

7. Not many people can afford to fly first class. The lucky few can expect more than just great service. They also look forward to __(1)___ great food. This is often very different from __(2)__ is dished up in economy or business class and has to be of the highest quality.

Air France, for example, aims to __(3)__ their first-class customers some of the best in-flight food available. They’ve even hired a famous French chef to help design the menu on their North American flights. His name is Daniel Boulud, and he also happens to be the owner of Daniel, a New York restaurant __(4)__ was rated one of the world’s top ten places to dine.

So, what exactly can Air France’s first-class flyers expect on their tray tables? __(5)__, Atlantic lobster with curry* and coconut sauce. Or, if you prefer, there’s also Moroccan chicken, French lamb chops, or beef with pepper and cranberry. Plus champagne* and caviar*, of course. Now that sounds like first class!

8. On February 3rd, 1975, something very difficult for an airline to swallow happened. The incident took place during a Japan Airlines flight from Alaska to Denmark. Ninety minutes before landing, 364 passengers were __(1)__ omelets* for breakfast. For extra flavor, canned ham was added __(2)__ the dish. Unfortunately for everyone onboard, __(3)__, almost all this meat was infected with bacteria. Despite this, it still tasted normal, and most people finished their meals.

In all, 197 flyers who ate the food fell ill. First, they began throwing up on the plane. Many also had terrible diarrhea* and stomach cramps*. The food poisoning was __(4)__ serious that 144 people had to be rushed to hospital as soon as the plane landed!

In the end, one of the three in-flight cooks who had prepared the meals was to blame. This was __(5)__ he had open, infected wounds on two fingers of his right hand. The bacteria found on the ham exactly matched the bacteria on the cook’s injuries, thereby proving it was indeed his fault.

Luckily, both pilots had steak for breakfast. 註:omelet 煎蛋捲 diarrhea 腹瀉 cramp 痙攣

The first thing I can look forward to is a nice hot shower. This probably differs from __(2)__ you’re used to, and involves some unpacking. The 96 trays which I carry inside me, you see, all have to be removed before I can be cleaned.

After drying, I am loaded with trays of freshly cooked food. But, __(3)__ safety concerns, this all has to be cooled down again very quickly, so they blast me with freezing, minus-32-degree air. Luckily, I’m not sensitive __(4)__ the cold at all.

10. Airplane food has come a long way in the last hundred years. Even economy-class passengers are sometimes pleasantly surprised these days when the food service cart finally rolls past. __(1)__, they can expect far more exotic* dishes than the standard “beef or chicken” options of the past. In addition, they can also __(2)__ meals more suited to their individual tastes and needs.

This is thanks to airlines having recently started __(3)__ various special meals __(3)__ their onboard food service. Vegetarian* flyers, for example, can pre-order vegetarian meals including eggs or dairy products, but no meat. Raw foodists, __(4)__, can book dishes that aren’t cooked or processed at all. Passengers from different religions too, can request specific dishes in line with their faith.

Sensitive __(5)__ gluten* or dairy? Don’t worry, airline chefs have something for you too. In fact, even travelers with medical conditions like diabetes* can now enjoy special meals. These days, it seems, just about everyone can fly with a full stomach!

11. Do you enjoy airline meals? In 2016, the International Air Transport Association published a report on airline waste, __(1)__ revealed that airlines produce about 5.2 million tons of waste annually. __(2)__ airline meals are often not eaten, food is a huge contributor to airline waste. Thus, wasted airline food poses quite a serious environmental problem.

Considering that most airline customers expect to be __(3)__ food during flights, some airlines are making an effort to provide food but produce less waste. For example, the airline EasyJet recently introduced “smart” meal plans __(4)__ their in-flight services. EasyJet used to waste as __(5)__ as 800,000 food items per year. With this plan, the airline could plan meals based on data regarding how consumers’ needs are influenced by different causes, __(6)__ flight duration* and time of day. The airline has used such data __(7)__ the most suitable meals for individual flights. As a result, more food will be eaten __(8)__ flights and less will be wasted.

Wasted food remains a major part of why air travel will likely be causing environmental damage for many years. For millions worldwide, food is __(9)__ scarce that parents are forced to send their children out to work. __(10)__, airlines must change their food policies. Doing so could lead to less waste and a more even

I’ve eaten __(2)__ more than 500 flights worldwide, on over 150 different airlines. Today, I __(3)__ two key insights with fellow flyers. If you want to know what foods to try or to avoid next time you’re eating at 30,000 feet, keep reading.

Tip number one is to stick to more savory options. Low air pressure and dry cabin air have __(4)__ a significant effect on one’s sense of taste and smell, making onboard cuisine up to 30% less flavorful. Stronger-tasting in-flight foods will be nearly as rich in flavor as they __(5)__ at sea level. You can choose drinks like tomato juice or foods __(6)__ curry and miso soup. You can even bring your own “secret ingredients” in the form of salt or Tabasco sauce. Anything to __(7)__ a little extra flavor __(7)__ your meal.

1937. Three years later, they brought the world Pinocchio. It was produced __(1)__ Walt Disney himself and based on Carlo Collodi’s book. In 2011, Time magazine named it one of the twenty-five All-Time Best Animated Films. Still __(2)__ by many to be the company’s greatest work, the film is also famous for beautiful music. Its theme song, “When You Wish Upon a Star,” received the first Oscar __(3)__ the Disney Company won for Best Original Song. The voice behind this hit belonged to actor and singer Cliff Edwards. Audiences, of course, heard it through the much-loved character Jiminy Cricket.

Since then, the Disney Company has walked away with Best Original Song on twelve more occasions, __(4)__ “Beauty and the Beast,” “A Whole New World,” and “Let It Go.” The company therefore makes musicians’ dreams __(5)__ true. As you may know, a special man named Walt Disney created me in the 1920s. At first, he wanted to call me Mortimer. Imagine that! Luckily, his wife Lillian stopped him __(3)__ making such a big mistake. She suggested the name Mickey instead. I think it’s much cuter, and I’m sure my millions of fans agree.

I did, __(4)__, learn two very important things from Walt. Firstly, he taught me that we really can make our dreams come true. It just takes very hard work, so we must never __(5)__. Secondly, we should also help others achieve their goals. It’s the greatest gift we can give them!

3. The Walt Disney Company gives the public a positive message. It tells people to never __(1)__ pursuing their

dreams. This message, __(2)__, is conveyed in “When You Wish Upon a Star.” __(3)__ in the 1940 Disney movie

Pinocchio, the song tells us: “If your heart is in your dreams, no request is too extreme.” If you want something,

nothing can stop you __(4)__ achieving it.

Walt Disney’s success also showed this. Disney had a passion for drawing from a young age and established

the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio at twenty-two. He had failures, hardships and experienced poverty, but he believed his efforts would __(5)__. He created Mickey Mouse. This rescued his career and helped him __(6)__ a kingdom. Disney said he began “with a dream and a mouse.”

In Mulan, Mulan uses her wits __(7)__ her country. __(8)__ dedication, she shows dreams shouldn’t be

forsaken. __(9)__, Judy, the cute bunny in Zootopia, wants to be a police officer. She talks all the time about it, but nobody takes her seriously. Just __(10)__ Mulan, she succeeds by never giving up.

world, the company has always had an important message to share with its fans: Never __(2)__ on your dreams. The song “When You Wish Upon a Star,” which was first introduced in the 1940 Disney movie Pinocchio, has similar words of inspiration. According to its lyrics, if you really want something, nothing can stop you __(3)__ getting it.

Walt Disney’s own path to success shows the importance of never giving up. At first, he __(4)__ a lot of failures in his career, but in the end his efforts paid off.

More recent Disney movies, such as Mulan and Zootopia, deliver similarly inspirational messages. 5. To Walt Disney, nothing seemed impossible. __(1)__ his lifetime, he always dreamed big. One day, he had one

of his __(2)__ ever. This was to build a giant theme park for thousands of children and parents to enjoy together. In the early 1950s, Disney started planning how to make this dream become a reality. He finally sprang into action in 1954, by __(3)__ 160 acres* of land (over 120 football fields) in rural* California. Work began with moving fifteen houses and clearing thousands of fruit trees. All this was, of course, to make room for what __(4)__ became Disneyland.

Less than a year after starting construction* on the park, Disneyland officially opened on July 18th, 1955.

Walt’s brother, Roy, bought the first ticket, priced at just one dollar. Soon, guests from all __(5)__ the world started to arrive. Within less than two months, one million tickets had been sold! Yet another Disney dream was no longer just a dream.

By opening his first cartoon studio he finally fulfilled a childhood dream, but it soon went bankrupt. __(4)__ 22, he had to move to California and start all over again. Then, just as he was finding his feet, he lost the rights to his most popular creation, a cartoon rabbit called Oswald.

Even after his success with Mickey Mouse, Walt had trouble convincing people to invest in his first full-length film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. He had to take out a second mortgage on his house __(5)__ the money needed for production!

Despite all these obstacles, Walt never quit. Instead, he kept chasing his dreams. No wonder his company has achieved the heights it has.

7. For around a century, The Walt Disney Company has entertained the world. During this time, it has produced

some of the most moving and inspiring films ever created. __(1)__ its memorable characters, it has thus given us many inspirational quotes over the years.

Who, for instance, can fail to be inspired when __(2)__ the phrase Buzz Lightyear is most famous for? Toy

Story’s astronaut hero merely has to say the words “To infinity and beyond!” and we all feel like anything is

possible. We feel like, despite our fears and weaknesses, there’s no limit to what we can __(3)__.

Dory the fish has a similarly powerful message in Finding Nemo. “When life gets you down, just keep __(4)__,” she encourages us. What she means, of course, is we should never give up, no matter what happens. Finally, a famous line from Mulan __(5)__ us all that it often takes trouble, failure, suffering, hardship or difficulty to bring out the best in ourselves. In describing the heroine of the story, the emperor says: “The flower that blooms in adversity* is the most rare and beautiful of all.” Inspiring words indeed.

five years to complete. These efforts, nonetheless*, soon __(2)__. It was one of the highest-earning films that year, and has since made over US$200 million.

Based on an ancient poem, Mulan tells the story of a Chinese girl. She disguises herself as a young man and leaves home at 16 to join the army. This is to take her aging father’s place in an upcoming* war, a brave act __(3)__ she hopes will save his life. A special little dragon __(4)__ Mushu, is the only creature she can rely on for help. With his assistance, she is able to become a real warrior*. Finally, she comes to realize her wish to help her kingdom __(5)__ its powerful enemy, and her brave deeds bring honor to her family.

As you might expect from a Disney movie, Mulan is eventually rewarded for her great courage, and for never giving up. And, of course, for daring to dream.

9. Walt Disney was a great dreamer. And, he continued to dream throughout his life, even __(1)__ all he’d

already accomplished. Perhaps this is why people weren’t too surprised when, at 58, he announced plans to build the largest theme park ever.

Situated in Florida, Walt Disney World is today roughly the size of San Francisco. Though primarily an amusement park, it’s more like a city itself. __(2)__ around 400 buses, it actually has a larger public transport system than Los Angeles!

In addition, it provides accommodation* for __(3)__ yearly visitors. In fact, Disney World has so many hotels that if you stayed one night in each room, it would take you 68 years before you managed __(4)__ in all of them! Walt’s dream world also provides employment for over 70,000 workers. That’s more than the number of employees at the other Disney resorts* __(5)__ combined!

These days, Walt Disney World is more than just a dream come true. It’s one of the ten largest tourist attractions on Earth. If only Walt the dreamer were here to see it!

10. I’m no ordinary rabbit. I have a passion for justice. Even when I was just a little bunny, I dreamed of __(1)__ a police officer in the big city. To make that dream __(2)__, I trained harder than anybody else in Zootopia’s police academy*. Everybody kept telling me to quit, but I refused. In the end, and despite my small size, I graduated at the top of my class. Nobody was going to stop me from __(3)__ a real cop!

When I finally got my badge* and joined the police department, however, no one seemed to believe in me. Chief Bogo, for instance, didn’t trust me with any real police work. All he wanted me to do all day __(4)__ write out parking tickets! Even the criminals, such as that fox Nick Wilde, didn’t take me seriously. But, do you think these obstacles __(5)__ could kill my dream? No way! In fact, they just made me fight harder for what I believed in. I told you I was no ordinary rabbit!

11. Walt was eight years younger than me. Despite this, I learned so much from my baby brother. He taught me,

__(1)__, to never doubt myself or my dreams. Instead, he said, always __(2)__ striving toward your goals. Always stay on the road __(3)__ success, no matter what. __(4)__ this path might be long and hard, there’s always a way. Similarly, Walt showed me that we can inspire others to achieve things they thought impossible. __(5)__ our own perseverance* and achievements, we can bring out the best in those around us. I think this is why he was able to build the entertainment kingdom that Disney is today. And why, after he died at just 65, I decided not to retire. I personally wanted to help __(6)__ his biggest dream into a reality. This was a massive theme park __(7)__ Walt Disney World. Not even Walt had ever attempted a project __(8)__ was so ambitious. Naturally, many challenges stood in our way, and it took an additional five years to finish, but we succeeded in the end.

Looking back on all this, I think the most important thing Walt __(9)__ to teach me was that dreams and wishes do come true. __(10)__ you have to do is believe. This, thanks to my brother, is what our company is all about!

12. We all have dreams. Dreams are those imagined situations in our minds __(1)__ we hope will one day come

true. However, people usually achieve their dreams only __(2)__ making a significant effort. In 2008, this fact was not lost on a young swimmer from Singapore __(3)__ Joseph Schooling.

In 2008, Schooling, __(4)__ just thirteen years of age, was a schoolboy. One morning, Michael Phelps __(5)__

has now won more Olympic medals than anyone else in history, visited the swimming club Schooling attended to train for the Beijing Olympics. Phelps was one of Schooling’s __(6)__ heroes. Although Schooling was star-struck and lost for words, nothing was going to stop him __(7)__ posing for a photograph with Phelps.

Schooling used the memory of this once-in-a-lifetime meeting __(8)__ himself to train hard at swimming. In

2016, he found himself competing against Phelps in the final of a one-hundred-meter event at the Rio Olympics in front of millions of people watching worldwide. Schooling __(9)__ to beat his idol to win the gold medal. The news of his victory quickly spread around the world. Furthermore, __(10)__ the country’s first ever Olympic medal for swimming, he became a hero in his home nation of Singapore. 13. In true Disney spirit, the movie Zootopia is all about chasing one’s dreams. It’s also about always attempting

to do one’s best, __(1)__ failure or criticism.

It’s thus no wonder that the lyrics* for the film’s theme song, appropriately __(2)__ “Try Everything,” echo this philosophy. __(3)__, the first verse of the song motivates listeners to start again after making mistakes, and to always get back up after a fall. __(4)__ these inspiring words, the song encourages us to continue trying, no matter what. In other words, even after having __(5)__, we should never throw in the towel.

These sentiments are __(6)__ echoed in the chorus of the song. Here the singer vows not to give up or surrender when encountering difficulties or challenges. __(7)__ there is the possibility of not being successful, we should at least attempt to reach our goals.

Finally, the second verse also reminds us __(8)__ we don’t always have to succeed. We also don’t need to be

so hard on ourselves __(9)__. Putting __(10)___ into something is thus what really counts. It’s far more important than the result. Just one more good reason to “try everything”!
